I made one just like this, but I added a garden hose inlet at the top of the barrel and a tap at the bottom, after a while fill up with water open the tap over a drain and let it flush through

nice idea... best Ive found so far. Im thinking of a way I could use aluminium mesh to roll up into a cylinder and just attach that both sides to the swimming pool hose. the fluid would drip down easy and maggots would find their way to the exits easily. but how would the flies get in though....
Hello i have a question i tried to build my own bsf bin however the maggots that I'm seeing are jumping and there's a lot of house fly in it. So I was just wondering if the larva that I'm seeing are the bsf not the house fly.
I made one without that big ass blue barrel and used that shitty style of hose and it is a pain to clean out. The hay will clog up the hose and you spend more time than needed. I will be making another one without the holes in the bottom and the mesh. The maggots will wiggle through the mesh as they do with a sifter I use to separate them from the flour. I will use a solid hose and it will not come out at the very top as they is more work the maggots have to do to get out. My hose will come out halfway up the bucket into a black container as they do not like light. I will say I like the plastic bottle on top, it’ll help keep the flys in, I used a piece of wire mesh and it did okay.
last year my maggot farm worked great . this year all the maggots die . its now a second time bucket is full of dead maggots. is there a disease that can kill all the maggots or is it just heat
Doubt it would be heat, ones used for fishing bait will sit in a fridge for upto a few days and then go out in bright sunshine and back into the fridge just fine Is it possible someone tampered with your farm and sabotaged you? Happened to me twice, found out after putting a camera up my neighbour was pouring all manner of nasty things in at night, he is one of these that moved into a country house on the edge of a village.... then preceeded to rip every plant, tree and blade of grass up and concreted the lot, complained about my animals so i had to re home them before he did something to them too 😭 (ducks and chickens that had been here for years at that point) a lovely chap he is If not hope you got it sorted or at the least wasnt put off the project totally
I made this factory as shown. My problem is that I get no maggots crawling up the tube and into the outside jar. I fill the inside with road kill squirrels and they get loaded with flys and very small maggots. None mature and never climb up and fall into the jar. What did I do wrong? Please help.
They are also still used in medicine too, but yeah most of these vids are to show people how to breed them for animal food or fish bait, both of which ultimately lead to quite a good harvest haul if you put the work in (and if the seasons are good to you that year) and can save quite a bit of money used as animal feed bulk over the course of a year They are also one of those critters that you will always be expanding your operation for like worm farms, they only get bigger year on year if done right and they eat your waste cooked and raw so whatever you cant or dont compost doesnt have to go in the bin I think a lot of people out there unfortunately forget just how important things like maggots, worms and such are for us
+ mark durrant I say old boy one actually enjoys this commoners verbal utterings, makes one realise how lucky one was to have had a private education which puts one in a very privileged position. If I ever take up (I very much doubt it) this crude form of angling I would probably purchase a commercial maggot farm to add to my dairy and arable farms.
