Drainage is the least sexy and by far and away the most important aspect of building. Far too few take it seriously. I salute you guys in doing this well in advance so you can get to the way more “sexy” renovations knowing you are safe safe safe from flooding and erosion. 🎉

So much great progress! I think you may want the first "tank" to be a settling pond, where the sediment in the water can settle out NOT inside a tank, in a location where it would be easy to dig it out again as it fills in. If you go straight into a tank, you'll have to clean the sediment out again and again. With a settling pond, the clear water can then flow through to the tanks and be much less likely to fill the tanks with dirt.
The amount of work you’ve achieved since you have taken on the water mill is amazing! I have no doubt you’ll be living in it in no time! BTW, I love the unfinished chairs sitting in the water mill!

It is so awesome how your one choice of using local talent to help you clear the land has led to exponentially expanding your knowledge and structural implementation of systems that will lead to long term protection of your land. As newbys to the area you would not have the understanding of the land that Nelson has. To me this expansion of expertise shows that the original decision was so much better than if the two of you had tried to do it on your own. Plus you have a lifelong friendship and have a new family with Nelson and his family and friends! I love what happens when we make good decisions we can the exponential expansion of our world in so many good ways. Bad decisions cause chaos and havoc! So know you know the process. Rely on the locals when you can they have generational knowledge! We Americans always try to do it ourselves and miss out of that generational knowledge! I was a math major in college and one of my professors told me to never clutter up my mind memorizing useless information or equations. Learn how the equations were created so you can always repeat the process to develop the equation and always know where to find information you need through research. Through my career (I am 78) I l think since I am basically lazy or (Smart) I would always ask those who went before me or who had generational knowledge for the information I needed. Best think I ever did. It shortened the time to get things done and the outcome was always much better than I could ever expect. Just like what is happening for you guys!

Looking back on when you first viewed the mill and dreamed of possibly owning it - and what it looked like back then - the transformation is already spectacular. So much work! But you three make a wonderful team.
That is so awesome that you work so well as a team with Nelson! It makes my heart sing that you've got your culvert done and the water will be saved for those dry seasons when you will need the water! Your property is shaping up to be an absolute paradise! The climate there is similar to Southern California with plants that grow well in the same way. Besides the figs, I saw berries and passion fruit that are edeble in your videos. I'm sure there are more, maybe some herbs and root crops?
Great job guys!!!! Just add 2-3 water totes on each terrace, simply overflowing into each other and then down to the next terrace to do the same again, until it reaches the stream….. Your probably have enough water stored to see you through the year!

Brilliant putting in all those cement tunnels to divert water. And, yes, Nelson is a godsend. This summer has turned into one big monsoon for us in Colorado & I can see globally just by watching various channels such as yours. Who knows if these weather patterns are here to stay? But, your harvesting water for your gardens & diverting away from your house is very good planning environmentally. You’re both doing an amazing job!!!

I had that type of relationship with my late husband and I miss it but at least I had it. I love your channel. Actually, I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and my grandmother’s ancestors were from Portugal and my grandfather from Brazil and I have a cousin living in Portugal and they love it. They moved from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon and it’s all working out very well. Anyway, I love your channel. You guys are so sweet, so nice and work very hard. I agree the deluge of rain enables you to see the erosion patterns...a blessing. Nelson is a blessing too. The drone shots really help us understand the drainage systems too. Pizza night cooking plan is innovative too. Yay How much weight can drive over those culverts, tubes handle without cracking.

I wiuld definitely mulch the soil...yes, youre right it does wonders for weed control...but, also, it's excellent for maintaining moisture and growing fruit and veg in too. You need to get some hoops and gardners cloth mesh too for pest control...works soo well. Also, get some corrugated metal raised planters ti use as beds too. Also, smaller logs used in the base of the planters will rot down, take up space you'd need to otherwise fill with cimpost, and encourage all sorts if wee beasties whicha re giid for the soil.
It was so cool seeing visit by the wonderful family I have also been following for a long time ...wonderful seeing so many of you becoming friends, good friends, a in person friends 😊 and how cool your are working with very good ways of getting your place in a very good way of dealing with the rain ...the must better and safer condition all around🎉
I am so happy for you that it is all working out thus far. And to catch that rain is a very good idea. I used those same tubes to build my 3-way biological sewer system. This winter, if you want, I ll bring you 10-20-50-100 aloe vera plants for your property. I know how much you love natural products and aloe is for sure a must on your land for internal and external use 😉. And let-s breath....🥰

Ok so my mom and I saw your visit with the Newby’s video! We fell in love with both of you! SOOOOO….. we have been binge watching your videos. Right this very minute we are watching the video from 2 yrs ago where ya’ll are looking for your dream property in Cali. The thing I’m noticing is that all the “loves” you have on each of the different properties (mountains views, water features, terraced land for Yurts and such….. and would we park our van here?) are ALL met with your property in Portugal!!!!! I’m not sure if you recognize this but your journey to “now” set the stage for fulfilling your dream!

This was a fun watch. If I had land like yours, and had those trenches and drains put in, I would make some waterfalls and add some waterwheels and generate my own electricity. That would be so awesome.
