Building a Medieval Castle in Modern Times

Great Big Story

It’s hard to fathom how magnificent castles were built centuries ago. One group set out to understand just that by building their own masterpiece two hours outside of Paris. Tucked away in a forest, a team of master builders and archeologists are attempting to construct Guédelon, a castle from the 13th century, using only medieval techniques.

Did you not pause the video at points where they were constructing to see what they were wearing? And they also have some 21st century tools. However, because they are using 800-year old techniques and not modern techniques, I still think what they're doing is incredibly awesome!

www.guedelon.fr/en/how-can-i-participate_95.html They have special formulas for sudents, usually in construction fields, so you may be lucky. Also, it's actually a concept of experimental archeology. For instance, a few years ago remains of a wooden watermill have been found. A replica has been built in Guedelon, is currently working and much has been learnt from this experiment.

Incredible! It's only sad that it will take so long! A dream of mine to live in a castle but to appreciate the amount of work it takes to build in the 13th century way and its resilience! They last far longer than modern buildings because they were built to withhold from attacks in battle... Bravo! Wish i were a part of this :) Good luck and I hope you all get to see it finished every single one of you!

This looks very interesting and could provide many valuable insights into how things were actually done. An important aspect of these castles was their upkeep so I hope that is also to be done in an authentic manner. Is there a serf village with blacksmith and stables etc nearby? Where does the authenticity stop and the practical start? I hope this becomes a more involved documentation.

They were doing the same thing in Arkansas, but they ran out of funding. I'm saddened that they had to stop their work. So now there is the "footprints" of a 21st Century castle made with 13th Century technique in Lead Hill, Arkansas (I won't say half built because it was no where near being halfway completed). It was shut down in 2012.
