This may be the most incredible project to come from the retro community, I never even considered the possibility of reverse engineering the motherboard and then engineering an improved motherboard, and for this to come from one guy blows my mind, it’s the engineers and modders like mathijs that makes this community so great, and the modders and RU-vidrs like yourself macho for shining a light on these projects and then being able to dumb it down to be easily understandable and simple enough for anyone to get into modifications, so thank you mathijs and macho, can’t wait see what’s next, I’m hoping this leads to reverse engineered boards for other handhelds

With none of the knowledge needed to do it myself I had to look to commissioning it from someone, unfortunately no one I thought to talk to seemed very interested and I ended giving up on it. Glad to see someone else with the needed skills eventually had the same idea. The thing I'd like to see going forward that I'd thought of at the same time is the main board being reduced in size and a new smaller more comfortable case being made with a larger single battery compartment and made with the new lcd screens in mind. If it's possible maybe include the power, sound & main boards all in one single board or maybe even a Bluetooth module for headphones.

Awesome work, and with the new shell it looks so good ! I wish he would do that for the original DMG gameboy, with built-in usb-c battery, internal pro sound, and all the cool stuff.

That's amazing! I've got two dead ones that I've been trying to revive but no luck so far (tried replacing the caps with ceramic ones like in one of your previous videos), so if these boards become more available that would be great to revive them and add them to my collection. I'm wondering if some sort of FPGA chip that mimics the original ASICs would be more viable in the future - maybe that's a job for MVG and other coding/firmware experts? All the same, hoping to see more of Mathijs' work in the future, possibly in other handhelds like the Gameboy Advance. Thanks Tito!

Loved the new video. Really great story, I never would have known about something like that before. I would love to see Mathij work on other devices after the Game Gear, maybe some of the Game Boy’s. It would be great to bring to life some of those that also may have been shelved for not working or other issues.

That's really cool -- I love to see replacements like this. -- Honestly, with all that empty board space, it would be cool to see Mathijs miniaturize it -- like to fit into a landscape GBA case or something -- so you could actually fit a GG in your pocket for once. -- That would be hecka rad.

Mathijs’ work is incredible. I would like to see the two-chip version in the future, as well as similar work for the atari lynx. I will be careful for new projects!

Born in the early 80’s and growing up in the 90’s, the Nintendo Gameboy and Sega Game Gear were one of my favourite things on the planet! Awesome vid my dude … what an epic upgrade! 🕹👈🥳👍✨

Wow, awesome work Matthijs (and as always a very cool video aswell Tito ;-))! The board looks super clean and I love the white mask on it! I already have my GameGear fully modded so I'll pass on the giveaway but as Frances below already mentioned, a SYF version of the Nomad would be an insta-buy from me!

what a fantastic achievement! well done mathijs i would love to see this style of work on the sega nomad or the atari lynx. also something game gear related too maybe movement of the speaker to possibly below the screen would be great as people with big hands like myself tend to cover the speaker when playing and it being in a central position would make it nicer thank you for the upload tito :)

Beautiful work! Makes me wish I still had my Game Gear. Some RGB support on the final product would be a nice touch. As far as future projects goes, I vote for the Nomad.

Even though I'll be playing gamegear games on my analogue pocket, I'm still and super excited about this and love to see projects like this born out of the passion for the original system and games.

This looks fantastic. I was on a roll repairing game gears and just got a nasty one with wrecked pads. This board would be fantastic to repair it. I need to get those rechargeable batteries to complete my ultimate game gear.

That's really awesome! It was always my favorite system growing up. With the reduction of components, I wonder if he's thought about making the board smaller and giving the shell a redesign?

Definitely hope Mathijs will create a two ASIC model motherboard. Have a GG with massive corrosion problem that would really benefit from one. The fact he's releasing some of his designs as open source hearkens back to a time when the internet was a better place, really respect.

This is insane! I've had two GG in the past, one completely unrecoverable, so I used as a donor to fix the other one. I think I still have the board of the unrecoverable one. It would be totally awesome that he does the board for the dual chip version.

This sounds good! I do hope they release a later version that DOES support the TV Tuner! Analog TV may not be a thing anymore, but there are other things you can use a TV Tuner for! You may have an analog video loop for your cable box or something, or maybe hook up a VCR! I hope replacements boards can be made for the NES in the future, ones that let you play ANY game, even those Codemasters games that fry systems with region mods!
