Great chatting with those of you that caught the premiere! I've already schedule my next video on building a Sony kit. I hope to catch more of you there.

Great video! I'm a Nikon user and always have been. Why change what works for me! Anyway, so I currently have the Nikon Z6II and the Nikon Z6, as well as a couple of other Nikon cameras I use for specific things. But the two Z6 cameras are my main event photography cameras. I actually bought the F-mount to Z-mount adapter, one for each Nikon Z6/Z6ii camera, and that enables me to use the regular F-mount (DSLR) Nikon lenses I already have or buy less expensive lenses, including a lot of the regular F-mount (DSLR) or even third party lenses, which I love. This can most likely reduce the total cost of a kit one may try to build, even if they are starting new and don't have anything yet. The adapters work great! I also have an SB5000 speedlight, and you were right to go with that one in the video. It is a wonderful speedlight that gives beautiful light. It was highly recommended for my Nikon Z6ii by a Nikon Rep at my local camera store. Thanks again for your wealth of information. I just signed up as a Patreon!

Oh hey! I'm actually a Nikon shooter so I can speak on this one with a bit of authority. I have a D500 (an older, semi-pro DX DSLR body), and my main lens is a 17-55 f/2.8 that is basically a crop sensor equivalent of a 24-70. It serves me well and I don't see myself going away from it unless I end up making the leap to full frame and fully overhauling my collection. I have their non-flagship flash as well (the SB-700) and although I've only had it since the beginning of this year, it has served me VERY well in that time. I'm still getting fully used to it so I can't speak on it with total authority, but compared to what I had before (a third party Yongnuo that I had to control manually at all times) it's not even close. Just a heads up - Nikon does have a 14-24 f/2.8 that was next to the 14-30 f/4 that you ended up going with. Using that one would have brought the prices of the two kits into much closer parity, but from what I've heard, the 14-24 is worth it and is VERY good. Personally I've always liked Nikon's actual lenses the best out of the major brands' lineups.

Sure, but then I would be comparing a 2.8 lens to an f4 from Canon and Sony. I just took a look at the Canon RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM. Looks like it is $100 less than the Nikon 14-24, so I guess it would narrow the gap a tad bit. Really, though, the main reason Nikon is cheapest is that the z6ii is only $2500. I really think when they come out with a z6iii and bridge the gap, if not overtake the r6 and a74 (overall), that it will move up to $2500. Anyway, I'm pretty exhausted from work, so I hope that made sense! :D Thanks for the comment!

@@MikMilman Ah okay, I think I forgot that you had chosen an f/4 from Canon as well since I hadn't watched that one since the day it came out. In that case yeah this is a more direct comparison. Despite being a Nikon shooter I haven't really kept up with their new releases; I tend to not look at gear unless I'm actually looking to buy something. It's interesting that you liked the Z6 more than the R6 when you tried it. Honestly, my decision to go for a Nikon body over Canon right from when I first got into photography was due to a very specific and tiny thing. All of the Nikon bodies, outside of their entry level stuff, had a shutter button where the half press was not a hard stop. That was it. I just preferred the feel of the smooth shutter press so much more that I went with it and haven't looked back 😂

Great video, thank you! I'm actually building a kit similar to this one. Nikon Z6ii, nikor 35mm 1.8, and a sb-700 flash, need more gear but so far it does great job for me.. but I do have a problem, an it is that the flash is not firing the IR beam that is important to me as a nightclub photographer. On my old dx dslr from nikon it works good, but somehow with the Z system it isn't.. does anybody know how to make it work? I read a lot of blogs, and it seems that nobody knows how to deal with it. It made me sad and angry because it is a lot of monney to invest into a new system that is actually worse in some cases than my old gear. Sory for bad english :) Mik, thank you for you effort to make your videos, I've learned a lot from you! Thank you!

I also discovered that after buying the Z6ii. So glad I still own my D750 for events. D750 with Flash and 24-70 and Z6ii with 70-200 for stage photos.

@@MikMilman thank you! Wish I knew sooner about it. Still, the camera is great, both photo and video, regardless of this IR issue.

Your reply on the 17-28 f2.8 compared to the 14-30 f4 got lost in the chat. Did you say no to that lens because you rarely shoot that open?
@MikMilman
@MikMilman Год назад
That's correct. I mean, with unlimited resources, I would rather have an f2.8 over an f4 any day. But considering that I rarely feel the need or even desire to shoot at f2.8 when I'm shooting that wide, it would not be a sensible recommendation for anyone in a situation in which money spent on a wide 2.8 is money not spent on something else they could use.

@@MikMilman the new 17-28 is less expensive than the 14-30.

They’re roughly the same price.
@MikMilman
@MikMilman Год назад
I don't know enough about these lenses to make a definitive comment, but if they're of similar optical quality and price, I would personally go with the 2.8. I don't think I need anything wider than 17mm and I don't need more reach than 28mm (I would just switch to a 24-70 at that point).

Man, you gotta embrace Godox lighting. You are wasting money on these kits.
@MikMilman

I bought one to try out. TBH I don't like it much. I still think its an excellent value, though and an easy recommendation for most.

@@MikMilman as a Nikon wedding photographer, I have a slightly different kit. I use the amazing 20mm 1.8 S instead of the 14-30, although I own that too. But the Godox V860III is the best event flash I have used. Never used Profoto but the price is prohibitive. For lighting receptions I use three Godox AD200 Pros with MagMod accessories.
@MikMilman
@MikMilman Год назад
There's definitely many different combinations of lenses that would get the job done. 20mm sounds like an interesting focal length.
@lyrictenor1
@lyrictenor1 Год назад
@@intrinsicimagery Same regarding the 20mm 1.8S. I usually will use that for events and weddings if I don't feel like lugging my Tamron 15-30mm 2.8. If I know it might be a really tight space I'll bring the Tamron zoom, but I really prefer to shoot the 20 1.8 prime.
