I was not expecting the circle cut at the end! Nice touch.

Well done and what's even better is that you made it a family event. It actually looks really good! I hope you and your family enjoy it for years to come.

This is one of the most informative videos on the process. It’s exactly what I was looking for

It's now June 21st 2023... How's it all holding up, especially the polymetric sand. Thanks.

Happy summer. The polymeric sand is holding up well. Mine was “gator sand 2 “ I think. Couple places where weeds have tried to encroach if pulled up can damage. I have extra to repair as needed since I didn’t return the extra bag.

Wish You'd Given Instructions step by step, Great Look.......but not detailed to keep my interest to figure out if capable, tools, expensive for my budget. Proud it worked for ya'll. Penney C

Thanks for the look. It wasn’t meant to be an instruction video but really does cover all the steps I took. The process of making concrete will determine tools, and size you choose or shape (since I chose round ) will determine cost . If you are going to build a patio this by far is less expensive than pavers . And certainly less than paying someone else. I used 80 bags of 80lb bags of concrete. So first know you can lift that . I borrowed the mixer. Happy to answer questions if you think you are wanting to do this . Many other videos I watched (I watched them all) using this mold. How to round corners was never well documented

I'm almost finished with my project. Your surface looks very smooth. I have some stones that are kind of rocky. Did you sand down some of your surfaces?

you were brave carrying all those 80lb bags in one trip. I have a small camry and only feel brave enough to carry 6 50lb bags in one trip

I just took the pics I took as I made it and made the video. I wasn’t looking to produce a video specifically. The many other videos on technique help but cutting into circle is unique here.

How many bags of concrete to make 1 mold? How many molds did you end up having to make? How long did the process take? Did you use sand or grout for the joints? Sorry for some many questions...This definitely something I'm considering doing.
@joshuabrooks555

One bag does about 1.5 molds . I used 80 bags for a 20’ across circle and probably had three molds left of cut off or overage molded blocks .
@joshuabrooks555
@joshuabrooks555 3 года назад
Each mold is less than 2’ and the patio is 20’ across. I spent most of summer because I mostly worked on weekends . The excavation took longer cuz I should have just rented a bobcat. I used polymeric sand that hardens into joints with water. Came out great . Little tedious if you watch video sweeping into joints and then hand brushing off flat surfaces. Hope this helps . Making it round added complication but worth it

Looks wonderful, but was the plastic underneath really necessary? Seems like overkill… awesome job tho. In hind sight, with all the work you had to do, would it have been easier to just use pavers? I am mulling over how to build something similar but man that looks like a lot of work!
@joshuabrooks555

Thank you. It came out great and continues to look great. The Geotextile fabric I feel is necessary because of frost heaving in the Northeast and hope to hold the ledge pack I installed at 4-5 inches . Beneath that is a lot of clay. A few landscapers also recommended . It is same fabric people building roads use and not simply landscape fabric. Pavers worked out to be about $6 per square foot and with the quick Crete walk maker it was about $7 dollars for a bag of concrete for 3.6sq ft. I think pavers look amazing but I was willing to trade my free labor for reducing cost of project . I did end up using more ledge pack than expected but deeper base is good. I highly recommend borrowing or buying a concrete mixer. My 20’ across circle was 80 bags. I love it is a circle but it did add work and cost

I believe I started with 4-5 and then had to buy 3-4 more. The gaps really sucked it in.

@@joshuabrooks555 Hey Joshua, have you had any drainage issues? I built one just like yours but 7 ft in diameter instead. However, I did not really do a slope and now I'm concerned that if I put the polymeric sand it would not allow the water to drain... How permeable has the polymeric sand been in your experience? Thanks!
@joshuabrooks555
@joshuabrooks555 2 года назад
@@bh5551 I have not had any drainage issues and was very concerned because this is a typical pooling area in my yard with clay. I set a 1/8 slope (I remember) or whatever was recommended on the lower side. I also dug a ditch for future French drain behind it, and sloped patio toward it. I don’t believe the sand is permeable. Water appears to flow in low points between high points of concrete mold.
@bh5551
@bh5551 2 года назад
@@joshuabrooks555 Thank you, appreciate your response! I'm trying to see if I find a vendor nearby that sells EasyJoint, I read it's permeable but much more expensive and difficult to find than polymeric sand. Let's see what I can do.

Hello just wondering what you used for mold release so the concrete didn't stick to the mold
@joshuabrooks555
@joshuabrooks555 2 года назад
Nothing. Placed mold on ground, filled with concrete, troweled flat , gently lift mold and concrete formed slid out every time.

How thick did you poor the gravel layer?
@joshuabrooks555
@joshuabrooks555 3 года назад
After removing soil down to 5inches so ledge pack could fill in and bring back up to appropriate grade. After compacting base soil or the dirt. I used 14 ton ledge pack (gravel mixed with stone dust) I think and pitched 2.5 -5 inches over 20’. Whatever appropriate minimum pitch is for run off. So gravel was about 5”.

Agree, this was an informative video. Unfortunately, I had to stop watching just over half through because you pan too quickly and it was making me dizzy. For real. What is the hurry? Anyway, the finish looks really good and I'm glad I watched what I did because I want to use the same color and finish but with the 'european block' mold. Thanks! Oh, and really nice that your family pitched in and was included.

I couldn't even watch this because the annoying music was mixed in so ridiculously loud compared to the narration. Why in the hell do people always feel the need to add horrible music and at ear-spiltting volumes?

Thanks for the watch. The volume control on your device is an easy solution as there is no narration. Good luck in your project .
