we're not professionals and aren't pretending to be...just a couple of older gals who wanted a place to sit and enjoy a fire and maybe roast some hot dogs and marshmallows....and of course have a few drinks!
I agree with 11th child studios your comment wasn't necessary what was the purpose? What exactly do they convey to the new OWNER during closing, title and deed that's what. And the owner IS responsible for the property taxes. So LEGALLY you are the home owner either way and are held responsible for anything that happens on your property. Just pointing out the FACTS.
Here is my thoughts on this job. First, Mrs. Meyer are you happy with the job that you have completed? If yes, then who cares what other people think. Secondly, how many people out there actually take a task such as this upon themselves to do? My final point is this, you took a task upon yourself to do and finished it, you took the initiative and that alone is praise worthy enough. It isn't the critics that count it is those in the trenches that matter. Enjoy your accomplishment!!
This is the definition of a DIY video. Everyday people using everyday tools and lots of elbow grease. It looks amazing! I can't wait to get started on ours. Thank you!
Hell of a job , finally have a home of my own with a back yard with grass . This made me think I can this ! Thanks for taking the time to document this 🙏
Hello everyone. I actually own a Lawncare and Landscaping business, and what this lady has done here, is pretty close to exactly what we do one our patio installations. One tip I'd like to leave you all with, is when you put in your rock for your base, if you check your local rental store, the have what is called a plate compacter. It's a gas powered machine that presses down and compacts what ever you drive it over. It's well worth the rental fee
I don't care what anybody says, that is back breaking work. Excellent job. I'm about to do the same and now have a great understanding of the labor involved. Enjoyed the video, thanks for posting and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
the ground here doesn't drain that well, so in order to keep the pavers from buckling during the freeze and thaw cycles, we needed to put some sort of drainage in. I would say if we had a sort of sandy loam that just laying them in would work without the sand, but where we live it's farm country with a lot of organics in the soil.
I agree, and I've done it. My husband and I put in a large paver patio at the back of the house years ago. The pavers were dropped off in the front driveway and I had to move every single one of them myself from the front yard to the back with a wheelbarrow over the course of three days. I calculated I moved roughly two tons! 😂 My husband was busy preparing the work site, leveling, and then laying the pavers. We got it all done just in time--as soon as we finished it poured rain for two days. What an experience! It looked great though, and that was our first time tackling that particular type of project.
Good to see a woman outside working. My lady would never in a million years attempt this. If a bead of sweat comes rolling down her face or a bug touches her, she freaks out! kudos to you ma'am! And the patio turned out nice.
+Bigchuck678 I agree bigchuck678. Even in my best days, I dont think I'd ever had tried to do what those too ladies did. Right or wrong..they did it and I hope they enjoy their beer and hot dogs! Good for you!! :))
I think it looks great! Good for you doing this huge job by yourself and saving a TON of money in the process. I am sure this video will be an inspiration to many.
So true, who cares if it isnt perfect. Electrical or plumbing mistakes can destroy a house, a pavers project cannot. And talk about money saved, guys in my area charge over 5 grand for this type of work.
So nice to see other ladies doing work and accomplishing projects around the house. I am trying to teach my 23 year old daughter as well since you never know what life will bring to you and you can rely on yourself. I do say Praise God for you nice neighbor for helping move the dirt! Great job!
I think you ladies deserve a huge applause! Your hard work paid off, it‘s beautiful. Quite the inspirational video. I can't wait to start my patio. Thanks for the info!
Tough ladies! I'm working on a lawn island with retaining wall brick, planting trees and shrubs. Then on to a paver patio, so much work and it is hard on the back! Great job gals!
wow...you've got some severe critics on here! Pay them no mind. I saw two hard working women doing their best and busting their butts! Right ON ladies!! Enjoy your patio. Wish I still had the omph to do itl
Well done ladies and thanks for sharing. I'm in the process of renovating a big old house myself and know the satisfaction of being able to do the work myself. Shout out to Bob too ...that's a lovely neighbour. Now I want a fire pit! Much love from the UK.
I’ve looked at a lot of RU-vid because I want to do the same thing. This is the way I’m going to do it and I prefer this video over the others because it’s more understandable and makes me feel I can do it as well. My only problem is what to do with the soil, I think I’ll have to add to other bits of the garden.
Loved your video. My favorite part was the swearing because it was realistic. I know I would be swearing the entire time...lol Great job and yeah, get your gloves. Thank you
That’s a lot of hard work. I’m impressed. Even though it’s not perfect you girls made some mistakes. At least you did it your self. Very inspirational.
I work in landscaping and i've done pavers, flagstone and all that stuff. Gotta say for someone that isn't a professional this is decent. Can't tell you how many lawns i see while mowing where some people just threw some bricks down over the grass and tried to make a patio lol. Kudos
You removed roughly 2.041 yards of soil, you said it rained so the moisture content was high... If I had to guess I'd say you removed around 3600 pounds or roughly 1.8 tons of dirt with your shovels. Good thing the neighbor with the tractor came to help out.
Loved the video! I'm embarking on this journey and don't have the courage to put it on You Tube. Your patio and firepit are awesome. Nothing gives one more satisfaction than doing it yourself.
Great Video. Thank you for sharing. My Wife and I are not professionals either, and we wanted to get a good idea of how to do it right. This helped a lot!
👍🙌🏼 the only reasons I haven’t started my 8x8 patio is Budget and I think I’m a little wimpy. But you ladies freakin rock. I think I will at least start the digging part tomorrow. Thank y’all for posting some motivation
Your patio looks awesome. I'm glad that u made it showing step by step. I'm going to do the same in my backyard. Thank you for sharing your back breaking work; again it looks awesome!! Kayla
just for future, dont have to tamp the soil. just need no lose dirt clumps. then after u have added gravel and tamped it add sand. stop adding sand inch from the level you want it, compact the sand, and put metal poles every 4 feet. for every 10 feet, you want 1/2inch high on one end of pole, and level with the pole next to it. (you do this so that water runs off the pavers..) now add the sand inbetween the poles, take a 5ft board and run it over the poles.. smooth as butta. good job!
+snack pack the running over the poles is called screeting. For people who didn't understand this.....he means, after you tamp the gravel.......lay down 3/4"or 1/2" pvc piping next to each other.......dump sand in between, and use a board to run on top of pvc so it creates level sand base. Move PVC pipes as u go alomg, and fill in the pvc slots by hand/etc.
how did I correct him? I added to his explanation. And all you gained from my comment (trying to help others) was that I had a 1-letter mistake? ok buddy
5:20- 😂😂😂 “This sucks!” Fantastic job! I moved the sod from my 15x30 pool site... it’s so much work, and those sod pieces are dense! “We need some inmates..”😂🤣😂 This is AWESOME!
Wow! The problem is now I can't complain to my wife about how hard I'm working redoing our bathroom. Very impressive. I thought about putting in pavers in the back yard, now I'm not sure I want to work that hard. Thanks for the video.
Good job. These people leaving negative comments love to hear themselves talk. Anyway most if not all pavers settle and move. Put some boxwood shrubs around the edge and you'll really give it that classy look. Good job.
In Arizona I would suggest using that landscaping fabric after the gravel and before the sand so you can keep those knarly weeds from coming up. Peace!
Polymeric sand will have issues after about 4-5 years and will have to be removed completely to repair it - that is HARD work. In contrast a sand base with sand fill, takes about 40 minutes for a patio this size which needs to be addressed each year.
I agree. Did one area 2 years ago and the weeds don't stop. About to do another and this time leaving 4" spacing filled with small gravel for better drainage but I'm seriously considering a weed blocker fabric. I don't see it being done anywhere online yet i just came up with it.
I love your work...Awesome!!! it is very charming and has great character. I like that the fire pit is off centered to be honest with you. I love the small imperfections it just adds that much character. I did this in my backyard and it is not perfect and get many compliments of the rustic organic look that my pavers have.
Thanks! That was so helpful. I am putting some bricks around a concrete slab at the entrance and needed to know what to put under the bricks. Very helpful.
I took my hedges out from in front of my patio it's hell of a hard job the roots r so deep it takes a lot of time and a lot of work I replaced it with some pavers and it looks very nice along with some fencing but I love working in my yard cuz I don't worry about what people say but I do get a lot of compliments
This is awesome. I like they didn't sugar coat anything. It's a lot of hard, hard work, so many try to make it look easy.. and then they had to dispose of that dirt. Great patio ladies! Congrats!
Good job most people would have quit for 2 reasons the first is the budget and the second is the desire to finish since people quit after all the labor and time. Good job
I put down 9 pavers for the base of a firepit very similar to yours. Had to be perfectly level and done right. It almost killed me lol! Just bought 100 more for a grilling pad and I have been absolutely dreading it! Seeing you ladies tackle this project has given me hope! Thanks and very nice job!
I am in the middle of doing something similar, and I came online just to get some ideas on exactly how to do it.. and I was ready to give up for the day as was getting frustrated with all the dirt and I came across your video, and when you said this sucks, I have to say I have said that a lot... was good to see a realistic person doing it, and taking more than a day to finish it like a lot of other pages out there, so thank you for videoing this and sharing it.
Bobbi, I would like to thank you for sharing your project details. You provided me enough insight to determine that this is not a project that I want to do, or can do by myself! I can see that because I don't have a truck that delivered supplies would be required. Also, I would need a way of disposing of the dirt and removed sod. Long-story-short, I think that I will seek out the assistance of a professional.
I will use this video when I work on my patio. Instruction is simple and easy to understand. I don't want to deal with machinery. This is back breaking work and you guys did a good job👏👏👏
There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so a cubic yard would weigh 2,970 pounds plus or minus 270 pounds. Your 10x10x6 inch plot yielded 1.85 cubic yards of soil. So about 5197 pounds. I'm sure you were exhausted! Great video.
Great Job Lady's 👏....I have watched this video twice and started my own patio project last November and manually doing this is not for the weak-at-heart or the unmotivated!!! My hats off to you both!!!
Nice work, ladies! I am currently at the excavation phase for two patios and you have given me encouragement to get mine done. My favorite line, "do you have anything to say?", "this sucks!"
I really appreciate you guys showing this full process! So many times you watch HGTV like I can do that, but you both show how hard it really is and you both are amazing!! Way to go Bob for coming through to help too! It gives a realistic impression of what we are getting ourselves into, but taking your time it came out amazing. Question: if we did this during Florida winter while the sod is half dead do we risk losing it altogether? Thanks again!! Cant wait to do this... well maybe I can😂🤣👍
You go girls! That was lot of work, but looks well worth the effort. Nice job. Would enjoy sitting around that firepit having drinks and sharing DIY stories!
Question: how much settling was there after installation? Did the patio sink in a little more than you wanted. Thanks for posting this video and you did a great job.
I am planning a very similar project in the near future so I really appreciate you making this video detailing the steps and items needed for this project. Thanks for sharing..
great job... thanks for the step by step to show exactly what goes into it. hoping it is a project that can be done solo over a few days up to a week on my time off. ive seen a few videps of the cement pour into forms. but i like how you did your with prepoured pavers...and put the extra effort into leveling and making it slope away from house. gravel and sand. wish i saw the part of how you built the fire pit. but it all looks great in the end. awesome job!
looks very good Bobbi, downside is you are doing the hard work while I am drinking a beer 2100 miles from home... Will give you a PM in a couple of days because you asked me where I am in a comment but I couldn't find that message back. Cheers and all the best! Enjoy the Patio!
One of the very best videos i ever saw on these topics. People use sophisticated equipment without bothering to say how to use/cost, etc. This was a video so simple and so easy to understand whats going on... sometimes i felt like I was in a trance watching it.... I will attempt to do something like this myself as well... thank you for sharing.
Pls give me the company were you bought those slabs because our family we were building a big patio and our slabs finished and we called the company and they said sry we dont have and apparintly we failed
