One thing I have recently learned is when you are sticking stuff in the ground (bamboo), to push it in from the bottom rather than the top! A lot less snapping!

Emma,I know you like to keep things natural on your allotment but maybe time to use some good slug pellets to get rid of them this year since they are doing so much damage to your plants?love following your journey on your allotment,you inspire me to keep going in my garden and I'm making some bunting to hang up when Spring comes over here in New Zealand.

Triangles - if you want anything to be strong, you need to make it with triangles. That’s why this one is so good, and the last falls over - unless you make triangles out of struts on either side of the uprights.

I'd put netting on the pea structure so they have something to grow up. Or you could put string round it in layers going up the structure. They definitely need something as they won't be able to cling to the bamboo. It looks good though

Hi Emma, new to your channel. Have you tried putting a beer trap down for the slugs? It's an old Victorian way of getting rid of them and I am told it works quite well. 😊

There is a general problem with slugs this year right across the uk. Something to do with all the rain we got all last autumn and winter and this summer. Stick some smashed up egg shells under your pumpkin plants. ❤️👍❤️

Don’t worry about what people say about the slugs, they are a pest and need controlling, I wonder if the people who complain realise that farmers put loads of slug pallets on their crops so these people who complain about the use of pallets can eat.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I followed that advice about not worrying about the black aphids on the Broadbeans. I watched all through Spring and into early summer and my plants shrivelled and the few beans that did form never grew and they shrivelled up. I ripped every plant out last week in disgust at myself because I knew better but listened to Ben on GrowVeg. Never again, my plants were thick with them by the time they had done the damage. You don't have to believe me, so good luck! Nice video otherwise and I always enjoy your content. X
@georgemartin9618
@georgemartin9618 2 месяца назад
My broad beans are literally covered in blackfly despite numerous sprayings with soapy water etc . I've been harvesting merrily for over two weeks and still loads left . I've about six varieties altogether and even though I sowed in succession they're all ripening together. Try sowing a variety called Luz de Ottono now for an Autumn harvest. I'll be trying them shortly for the first time as I'd never heard of summer sown broad beans. They can be sown to overwinter too just like Aquadulce.
@jimmydemetriou7847
@jimmydemetriou7847 2 месяца назад
@@georgemartin9618 That's good. I did sow my Broadbeans 2 years ago in the autumn, and they did quite well. I can vouch for the fact that spring sowing seems to attract worse infestations, but I have still experienced the black aphids with Autumn sown Broadbeans as well. Last Autumn I was a bit unwell and couldn't do the Autumn sowing, so that why I had to try Spring Sowing. As this year's been so bad I think if I don't get my sowing done in Autumn I just wont bother, even if there's a chance of a decent harvest. It's too soul destroying to watch so many healthy plant go from lush growth to a diseased state. I did try a few remedies, but I refuse to use harsh chemicals that hurt nature. As gardeners we should sometimes accept a loss and get over it. This year is a very difficult years as we all are experiencing. Every years I grow lots of pumpkins and beans of all types, but i just can't go round looking for slugs and snails because my spine can't bend and twist, so I am not agile. My best plants are my tomatoes, some peppers and chillies, a few aubergines (in my greenhouse) and flowers, of which about 1/4 were eaten by the molluscs, which I call the devil's pets. We spent all late Winter and Spring wating for the sun, and I know so many are disappointed with the UK weather. One nice consequence of this though, is that many fruit trees are having a bumper harvest. I had a bucket of cherries, a lovely ongoing harvest of raspberries, some lovely strawberries, gooseberries, and a few other bits and pieces. Next year, if the weather is doing the same (unlikely but possible) I'll keep potting on my cucurbits into bigger pots and let them get big so they develop their prickly hairs ready for planting out. Wow, this turned into a small essay, sorry lol. X

I’d use twine to put horizontal supports at say six inch intervals vertically all the way up the four support canes. I’ve done that with mine and they’ve got the hang of it well. Easy peasy, if you’ll pardon the pun! Good luck it looks great. 😊

Garden math: Sow what you need = all get eaten by slugs, birds, drown, get dug up by something or finds another reason to not make it Sow 300 more than you need in hopes that you get some you can plant and get crops from = all 300 decide to fight on and now you have too many I end up being the second person 😂

She did, and some people in the comments were ugly about it. She's not the only one battling them. The slugs have been terrible in the UK this year. Some have all but given up, and they've used all kinds of methods, even salt, beer, and hand picking and drowning them.
