Allotment gardening for beginners, as shown by a beginner!
I'm Emma and I'm a beginner gardener, working on my first allotment plot in South London. I'm a complete gardening newbie and believe in learning by doing! My vlogs are my online diary of my progress on the plot and I show you the good, the bad and the downright ugly along the way. Watch as I battle weeds, build incredibly unsafe structures and attempt to overcome my fear of nature.
Hello Emma, I enjoy your vlogs & your care free gardening style. One way to support your Loganberry would be to put up a trellis structure and try growing it up that. Another way is to fix up some strong garden wire to either a fence or wall and train it along that. This method is how I've got mine. It is well established though, as it was planted over 10 years ago by my late father. I don't have an allotment but just grow some runner beans. If you'd like any advice or tips on how to prune your Loganberry let me know.. P.S. You only pick the berries when they turn completely black, RED berries are NOT ripe.
Maris Peer will give you lovely new potato flavour at Christmas providing they are not infected by blight. Maris Piper are plentiful in the shops throughout Autumn and Winter and should be planted in Spring.
Emma, you are eating the fruit too early. The loganberry must be dark red, almost purple, and they’ll be sweet. The blackcurrant needs to be soft. And no it doesn’t taste like Robinsons because it’s not full of refined sugar.
most of the weeds u have growing at the bottom is bindweed u need to keep pulling it out and burn it or drown it and make a feed out of it like u do with the nettles
I'm binge watching your blogs at the min. Just wanted to say your are doing a great job and do everything in your own time. Never mind what people say. It's your plot to do with what and when you want.
The only thing better than peat for the garden is home made compost. I know it is almost impossible to make enough But, make all you can and, just like the "old boys" on the field, in 30 years time all the "youngsters will be saying, "see that Emma, she just shoves then in and they practically leap out of the ground. Here´s looking forward to that day. Great plot, lovin´ the journey .
I loosely tied the stem of my cucumber seedlings to the supports at the beginning. Kinda shows them which way you want them go. As they got bigger I repeated this further up the trellis , mainly for support, as the stems are a bit flimsy and cucumbers can get heavy and drag the stem down. And loganberries are not self climbing. You have to tie them to the support structure. Which is a bit of pain because they grow very fast and the canes can get super long if left unchecked. Got to do mine. Thought it was dead after this spring but it just started sprouting new canes again.
So many years ago I went to a school to learn gardening, and the school has a big greenhouse and grew cucumbers. All of them had spikes on them, so when we picked them, we ran our gloves hand up and down it to break them off. ( no naughty thoughts now) and then we got them set in plastic sleeves. But if there are prickly cucumbers that isn’t meant to be eaten, with the outside on, I’ve never heard, I must do some searching .
Poundland do a packet of green clips which are very useful to help keep crops upright their growing, such as tomatoes and beans etc; and may be of use for your berries on the netting.
Thanks Emma for the cheerful video, your two plots are blooming in the summer sunshine . I preferred the original balloon colours, but if it makes Einstein come off his hunger strike then I'm all for it .
not sure about the red warning colour idea, I mean berries are red and many birds eat them I know the blackbird wasn't scared of my strawberries lol, blue/green and white looks nice as well though come on Einstein show some appreciation
Emma , why don't you put the bowl of the balloon ( filled with meal worms ) on the wood where you feed him so he sees and gets used to the bowl, then when he is ok with it hang it up in the tree. Xx k
Would it not be possible to invest in a strimmer, would save you so much time and effort keeping the grass down and help with the weeds. Love your enthusiasm, you always make me smi!e..
Let’s hope your female cucumber flowers will get fertilized! 😊 Have you ever used cardboard to suppress weeds? If you start collecting cardboard now, you could use it in the autumn/winter once you get your weeds pulled out. It’s a good no-cost solution.
Need the male flowers on the cucumber plant to pollinate the female ones. Also they are all rather prickly but when u pick the cucumber when it’s ready the prickles with brush off
No doubt the balloon bird feeder was made in China....where there are no birds...All baby cucumbers start prickly, as they grow they smooth out, unless you've gone for a prickly variety
Thank you Emma your plot is looking really lovely I love the colour of the hot air balloon green and white are perfect l hope you get some cucumber s 😊🎉🎉
The baby cucumbers are (for now) only the base of the female flowers, they will only start growing if theyre pollinated by a male flower, so i dont want to discourage you but theres a good chance they will fall off still 🙈🙈 i think i have the same variety and i actually ate one of them today and yeah i can reccomend peeling them first, the skin was kind of hard to eat lol. But it was so lovely!! It only had a very small watery/seedy inside which is the part i like the least so that was great. It was all crunch and it was quite sweet!
You can compost all the green weeds - you can build a gigantic log pile with branches - or burn them in the incinerator and put the ashes and charcoal on yours beds and compost heaps❤ Then when it's empty put the weed fabric down. That's Winter taken care of😂
I adore your vlogs and clothes! Your gardening style is so relatable. I don't have many in my life that share my love of gardening. I love playing in the garden (that's what I call it). Thanks for taking us along. Sending love to you, Einstein, Rocky and Mr. Fox. ❤️🐈⬛❤🦊❤🐦❤️
Hi Emma I think the cooler colours of the hot air balloon are more of a good blend in with your plot. Hopefully Einstein will feel comfortable with the new feeder soon 😊 Have fun on your holiday, it's always nice to get away. Looking forward to your next video xx
