Hylians are smaller and lighter than IRL humans. Link is 5 feet , 2 inches in NuZelda. He can survive falls at terminal velocity into water. He would have to weigh less than 80 lbs. (The weight of a Golden Retriever.)
Wetting the fabric with a spray bottle before painting with acrylics works great for not having it all absorb into the fabric like that. You can also thin it out with some water and do more than one coat to get it more even.
Bro, you're killing it of late! You've always been one of those creators that bring a smile to my face for years, so keep up the excellent work. We need more like you on this platform.
This was actually incredible, really shows you went above and beyond getting this thing to look like the (virtual? Real?)… the thing you see in game. And the link cosplay was just the cherry on top of an already great cak!
I gota say, my first thought while watching you try to glide was, the locals peering out their windows and seeing a dude dressed up in some weird costume trying to fly around is not what they expected to ever see🤣🤣love your work, mate😉👍
I remember when Zelda was kinda of a niche game where people were more familiar with Mario. Nowadays I think Zelda thanks to Breath of the Wild is much more well known.
Reply before watching: yes gliders work as long as the upward force of the air resistance on the glider screen is close enough to the gravitational pull on the object holding the glider. It's been too many years for me to know exactly how much, but in short yes! If this glider does... Eeehhh I think it will be too small
@@NFTI to lift yes, to slow a descent it can be smaller then the gravitational pull by a certain %. Also you held it almost vertical when jumping so you wouldn't have any effect of air resistance anyway 🙈🙈
Love the video man. I'm always waaay to planned out and seeing you just winging it and making something really cool really shows me that I need to take it easy and sometimes just start without planning everything to the max.
No plan survives contact with the enemy! Always in motion, the future is! Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face! Or some other variation of that lol
Nice work! :) It's a great replica! by the way : at 12:12 , I am 100% agree with you when you said the designers don't have to worry about if the thing can actually works , I’ve had similar issues on one of my project !
My personal theory is that, much like in the divisive movie ‘John Carter’, the gravity in the LoZ world is much less than our own. Not to the point where Link can jump a hundred feet in the air, but enough to allow the air resistance to provide enough lift for the glider to work. Either that or thiccc air 😅
I'd say the atmosphere is denser and the gravity is higher. He falls at the same terminal velocity in a dive as a human on earth does. I believe a higher gravity and a denser atmosphere would allow for both this and the paraglider.
i mean prolly the Planet hyrule is on is very medieval so all the tribes and kingdoms occupies small territories ! also TotK has many pockes of near moon gravity now so i think ur on to something
the size is obviously an issue, but I think you also needed more slack on the fabric. It was pretty tight, so even if it was bigger it wouldn't really "balloon" up much to catch air. Ofc, real paragliders are firm as well, but they're MASSIVE compared to the rider. To get away with being smaller, you'd need a larger fabric to wood ratio, effectively making the sail bigger without making the whole build bigger.
@@goldenlotus3046 i mean to be fair with a real glider if it's bit properly you can feel it "catch" even if you drop at ground level. It wont DO much, but you can feel enough to know the glider might actually work. And I really don't think this one was gonna work regardless XD
love the quality full length content. would love to see some the material you make the shorts with as full videos as well, even with longer release windows.
I was curious, too. On a hang glider site, I saw that a popular design was about 32ft wingspan. Guess Nate would've had to go way bigger to get a legit glider.
@@technopong for use as a short-run parachute glider, however, somewhere in the middle would suffice. The control wouldn't be easy, but with practice it could keep you from breaking a leg. I think bamboo would be a wise change for a lot of the frame.
@@technopong I had to do some research into hang gliders some time last year, and wingspan does appear to be one of the biggest things to deal with to start. You get a better glide ratio (distance forward/distance down, literally a number for your downward slope) with a lower aspect ratio (related to wingspan relative to chord lengths I believe. A wing that looks closer to an equilateral triangle will glide better but be less maneuverable. A wing that looks like two long right triangles stuck together will be more maneuverable but more likely to get a beginner killed), which is in turn related to your wing load (which is your wing size relative to the weight of whatever you're carrying underneath it). Assuming I'm recalling all of the above info correctly (there's a good chance at least some of ^that^ isn't quite right), you then have a bunch of aerodynamics calculations to get through so that you can figure out the specific shape to make your aerofoil cross-sections based on drag from wind acting on different parts of the wing.
You have to hold 2 wings, 1 wood, and 1 ‘aero kit’, throw them in a pot, and wait till the music stops. Add monster parts to customize. The ‘aero kit’ may be fictitious in both the game and real life, and what constitutes ‘monster parts’ in real life is open to horrific interpretation.
Nate you forgot to build in one MAJOR factor, you needed to build in lift for it to glide, you could have used the same design but with much bigger wings and fabric that generates lif.
Didn't see the channel name at first, but I had this on in the background, and finally looked at it, saw Nate for only a split second and thought "TKOR?" and I looked closer and realized, no, but it IS Nate
Someone actually brought the glider to life, that is what I call commitment 👏👏👏👏👏 You should try testing it in a rec center pool, that way you’d have a high enough altitude and a safe landing👍
Nice job on the glider, Nate! I'm so surprised that you still have all your fingers, although to be fair as a fellow maker myself, I do this type of "finger vice" all the time when dealing with super glue. I've only lost -2 fingers, and some of them are now make of wood.
Wow, this video is great, loved the idea! It would be interesting if you could make a glider that works and make it look as close as the one in the game.
I sent it to a shop teacher I wanted to have a stroke, but he survived and heard the narration. Long story short I'm on the run and need new instructions.
Pretty much identical to the Umbrella parachute glider, pretty much as a young kid we think we can float gently down a hill with dads umbrella so we take it out side open it up and jump down a slight hill, to our dismay it doesn't work like we though it would. Did the same thing with an oversized patio umbrella at about 6 to 7 times the weight and well it still doesn't work. LOOOL
it's some bit of crafting you've done there Nate! definitely not practical but it sure looks great! though I love seeing you wing it... I cringed everytime I saw you perform some questionably safe "techniques" with power tools. > as for testing... I was half expecting you to ride strapped to the back of a pickup truck & seeing how fast you need to be going for it to start pulling you up (though I'd imagine the fabric would tear from its anchor points before that happens) anyway, cheers & looking forward to your next build!
There's really something to be said for this style of making. Sometimes you've gotta buckle down and do detailed high-quality work, but if that's not necessary, there are no rules - cheat till you win!
I believe you are the true succesor to the King of Random. You have the same spark Grant had when he was running it (R.I.P. Grant), while the current TKOR channel puts out 5-minute craft-esc content and is in a severe nose dive.
Complete ineffectiveness notwithstanding, that's still a really cool display piece. Nice work! When's the sequel where you make one 10 times bigger so you can actually glide coming? XD
This was cool! Also, I'd recommend fabric paint instead of acrylic paint, especially from that brand, it's not ideal on fabric. It will begin to crack from sun exposure or a few washes later, but it looks so neat regardless!
Good looking glider! As someone who's currently playing the game I'll mention that it's my assumption the fabric is probably a little thicker in game, that i don't know what kind of wood they use (that doesn't catch on fire lol) and that you'd want the glider parallel to the ground instead of pointing upward.
Needs little bit more of a curve to catch the wind like a sail. A little bit wider and longer. But in general that small of a glider that low to the ground with less air to grab person would need to be the size of a thin 6 year old I think
There is definitely a difference in how links glider looks when it's just an item sitting there, and when he is up in the air. When he is actually using it, it looks like allot of fabric.
I will say the same thing that got me blocked from tkor. You are really great with your hands, most creative person I know, thank you Nate!! So glad I subbed:)
Balsa composite. It needs to be so much lighter than it is, and under any stress, the connections you have and the fabric you're using won't hold. Canvas.
Im sooo blown away on how successful this channel has been over the past couple of years, I have been here since just 5K subs. My man has now got over 300K+... Massive respect to you and your team. You make such fun and engaging content. I can't wait to see what's in store for us in the future. ❤
Obviously one couldn't actually glide with this but I do wonder if can even support the weight of a person. Could one hang from it without breaking it?
it would have to bigger than a hang glider to compensate for the weight of the wood. But if you used aluminum frame and covered with a high density foam and made it look like wood. It would be able to be around the size of a hang glider. And i'm so making this up as i go but hey it sounds.....sound...
As a Tailor, I can tell you that the Imagery on the Fabric is done by Fabric and Not paint, and the Fabric that's on the wood Kite itself is made from Rib Nit Fabric as it needs to Stretch to fit. Just a heads up! Here's an Idea, Make the Kite the same size as those Sky Diving Kites u see in the air, make it that Big and I think you're good to go!
