I built a shipping container house and in this video i will do a total cost breakdown where i go over every part of the budget from material and labor costs to soft costs like permitting design and engineering. How much does it cost to build a shipping container house? is a question that depends on location and context but I hope our experiences can help define your own budget for a shipping container build.

His place isn't far from my parents. Some people came in to my parents neighborhood and put up some unattractive "Off The Grid" units and priced the buildings into the stratosphere. Fortunately they did not run power up to the BLM property line. That would have instantly created a reason for people to instantly build on the other properties. Luckily, the guy who brought power up to my parents block hasn't caused people to build on adjacent properties yet. It's still a beautiful view around thier place for now until people catch on to the area.

Honestly, I appreciate both the honesty and the timeliness of the project. I think HGTV can give unrealistic expectations on what it takes/costs to build or redo a house. Thanks for the honesty and the openness regarding all the issues including timelines and cost!

Fascinating. I've done the majority of my container home myself (except for septic install and well etc) and I'm just about done with the home and I'm at about $80k (I was hoping for $50k to $60k). This includes price of 1.25 acre lot in rural area that cost $9,500 (purchased in 2019). EDIT: I'm in Florida

Just like any other type of construction its is possible to build at a wide range of cost per sf I have seen DIY container homes built for less than $100 sf and i have seen high end versions with over a $1,000,000 price tag. Good luck with the project I will check it out!

I would recommend looking into CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) as a more economical end environmental friendly alternative. CLT has a positive (it stores) CO2 impact, compared to steel and concrete which has a very high negative CO2 impact.

We are looking into CLT too! right now it is expensive so we are checking the cost trend vs the environmental impact of reduction of solar cooked cement and recycled steel

I've done several home "gut job" rehabs and these costs seem way out of line with my experience. $6,100 for tile work??? $9,500 for HVAC??? $3,000 for faucets and plumbing??? I just can't imagine those costs unless you were paying someone else to do all of the work... which maybe makes sense for Joshua Tree given that I'm sure laborers are going to charge extra just for going to a remote worksite to do a small job.

I'm glad you finally finished and published the numbers. There was many factors in the cost of constructing this project. CA is a very nonsensical bureaucratic hell hole and you picked one of the easier places to construct a house. With Joshua Tree being so close to NV/AZ I wonder how much money you would have saved building it over the state border.

Outstanding series! Loved the whole thing! Small correction - at 17:46 in the video there is a breakdown of labor costs and in the 2nd bullet point under "Construction Labor" it says " - $28000 for 400 "weeks"...", I think you mean 400 "hours". Probably too late to fix... but it's a minor issue. Does not detract for "Outstanding series". Great job. Waiting for the next installment!

Hi, thanks for completing the video its going to work for me even though a few years have passed as I am just detailing my project after buying land in AZ. I am curious as to the cost for anchoring :$3924 Anchoring Containers to the Foundation. Why so much or rather, what did you do to anchor to cost so much? I do have some more questions but i will watch again to get some questions straight in my mind before asking. My project is for 3 -40' High Cubes , one time use side by side and the containers if I can get them are approx $12k each... CRAZY increase

we covered it in episode 6 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pSL_O8xjQVI.html most of the cost was in the steel. Ground screws could represent a significant cost savings for foundations and anchoring. earthquakes are a code consideration in CA that also drives costs.

If you can find a pre-fab company that is flexible enough to build what you want then pre-fab can be great. The challenge is in permits. The established pre-fab companies have state certification that can reduce inspections but most dont do installs or site work so you still need a GC and a lot of GCs dont want to just do site work while being responsible for install
