4:40 imagine you bought a Steinway and you just realized that Tiffany tried to paint it? How special would you feel? (I mean if you have a Steinway you would probably feel thankful and happy and of course I am not discouraging the other workers there because I know they put in so so much hard work for this but just imagine) Ps, I do not have a Steinway but I am still really grateful to be able to have an upright piano because I know other people only have electric pianos!!! So plz appreciate your instruments and make sure to keep them sanitized in times like this😉 (just a little reminder)

For the Stringing dept: A brief explanation about scaling of strings, and the scaling differences between different piano sizes. i.e. a 'Baby' and a Concert Grand. ....Oh, you are going to Hamburg for that... in German, string scales is "Saiten Mensuren"; the question "Eine General- Erklärung über Saiten Mensuren im Klavier, und in verschiedenen Klavier Modellen", I hope this helps you a little out :-) Soundboard is "Resonanzboden"

Just yesterday I‘ve been to a place called the ‘‘Klangmanufaktur‘‘, which was founded by 4 former Hamburg Steinway employees who optimize and refurbish Steinway instruments. They are based in Hamburg as well and have some gorgeous instruments, one of which I became completetly infatuated with, such incredible sound and also tactile qualities. I was later told it was 110 years old! The Klangmanufaktur has a very interesting approach to sound quality, as their instruments are oftentimes stripped of their paint, apparently because said paint impedes resonant vibration. A side effect of that is a sort of matte finish, showcasing the wooden texture of the instruments which I personally find more asthetically compelling than the sort of epoxy finish normally applied to grands. Martha Argerich once rented one of their Grands to prepare for an umpcoming performance and I got to play on that exact instrument!

That was a cool tour, and the plank bending gave me a little more insight into what goes into making these magnificent instruments. The mug is a nice touch, and the painting of the founder was cool. Looks like you cover your piano when not in use. That's a good practice to protect against dust and scratches. There's an art gallery where I live, with a 9' AB Chase which they also cover when there isn't a concert going on. It's funny that you hugged your piano while talking about your partnership with Steinway, which is like symbolically hugging the company. This is the first time I've ever associated Steinway with hugging, but here it seems perfectly natural.

Your phrasing of the Chopin Ballade 2nd theme is one of the most musical I've heard, and though I've listened to and appreciated your playing before, this is the first time I thought you could be one of the best young pianists today. There's a freshness to how your inflect the left hand arpeggios in the middle of the theme (the part with the circle of fifths) and I loved the right hand's combination of tasteful rubati combined with varying degrees of legato. The sound is warm and intimate without being indulgent and sappy. Many of the famous young pianists today don't impress me (though they aren't bad pianists by any means!) but your Chopin playing here impressed me.

On your next factory visit, AFAIAC I'd say there are two main topics: (1) the production of the sound board with wood selection, gluing, shaping, finishing to the point it is mounted in the piano's case and the string frame can be put on top, (2) the voicing - we've seen the "tuning" of the keyboard action (wow, three days of work) but when the keyboard is slid into the piano, there must be significant work to do still (aside from tuning the strings). We know that each instrument sounds different than others from the same model and factory, but how much is voicing, actually? There is a video on YT of a group of pianists as selection committee to choose an instrument for their new recording studio. Knowing how much a tuner can change a piano's sound by e.g. working the felt on the hammers, the question is if they purposefully create different voicings for people to choose from?

Thank YOU, Ms. Poon for sharing your experience of Hamburg Steinway. Very interesting... I appreciate your desire to bring the human element into the vlog. Norm Grayston, Gorlitz, Sk.

Everything related to the pianos is welcome, Tiffany: without an excellent piano, there will not an excellent pianist, so is very interesting (and useful for you as professional pianist) to know everything about the instrument. And for me too.
