Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. Here is part 1 of building a strat guitar neck. This is a nice quarter sawn flame maple piece of wood perfect for a 1 piece neck
Damn man i hate when your videos end.....you are a very good woodworker/instructor and very inspiring....i just got a telecaster body and really wanted to try and build my own neck for it great vid!
man, watching you do yhe truss rod groove was just painful. I actually cried. I like your channel and seeing what ways to do things and not to do things
@@elsenorxhace10anos86 from what I’ve seen fender does one pieces necks with maple fretboards but other companies glue a maple fretboard on a maple neck.
Great video, I'm a beginner and want to try this. I have a few questions though. is that a double action truss rod? you only have to anchor it on one side right? could you have the adjusting part protrude at the headstock end? Could you send a link of where you would buy a truss rod like that. Also, where do you get your templates?
For the 12th fret only, couldn't you still draw x's but instead of going side to side go side to centerline? That way the dots would be centered between the edges and the centerline?
Just a very basic question, when you take the sanders to the headstock I noticed that you weren't sanding with the grain. Just curious about why? In my EXTREMELY limited experience I thought you were always supposed to sand with the grain
what type of truss rod? was reading stewmwc site their hot rods are for a 2 piece neck. I want to do a one piece and is the channel flat? just want to verify. You make neck building seem easy its answered alot of questions as far as whats next in the process tanks again.
Hi Big D, So it must be OK to put a dual action truss rod into a single piece neck and it won't push the skunk strip out? Great channel you have , Thanks.
You could have stopped the truss rod channel 1/2" away from the heel and drilled the counterbore so it looked factory. That's how I install hotrod truss rods, give it a shot buds it's not hard to do. Plus then it looks way more professional!
i know Im asking randomly but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Princeton Joshua thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Hi, are you using a hex ended truss rod? I bought one of the low profile truss rods from StewMac and was not sure if it would work having the adjustment at the heel. I thought it would need to be at the head stock. Thanks!
Slightly advanced question here, but did you route the truss rod channel the full length of the rod? If so, what keeps the truss rod from pushing the skunk stripe out of the slot? Do you just trust the glue to hold? I'd like to make some one piece necks but with superior double-action truss rods, so I don't have to tinker with curved rod channels and angled access holes... but the rod popping out of the channel is my main concern.
Joey Zahariuk Thanks for the insight! I’m actually working on skipping the skunk stripe altogether. Building a machine to drill the length of the neck for insertion of the truss rod, using a self centering gundrill bit.
@@ForestCinema good luck most guys that install these truss rods rout for the Rod itself then stop and route a wider router for the nut portion. He did one channel this was obvious directed at the beginner builder showing how it can be done easily with minimal tools. I've watched all of Bigds videos and he's super talented luthier. People were trying to cut him down here and to me this is one of my favorite videos he has done. Not everyone has a fully functional workshop with thousands of dollars of tools and machinery. Most of us enjoy making our own instruments and are using basic tools to do the job. Thats why this series is one of my favorites.
@@bigdguitars but how do u know where to start the nut on the neck? I didn't notice any center lines or fret lines on the strat template. It seems like when u go to transfer the fret markings to the neck, you have no reference for where to line up the nut on the ruler....
This is done terribly. You said strat neck but strat necks use curved truss rod channels as well as skunk stripes they also only use single action truss rods and they don't route all the way for the channel. They drill 3 degrees on both ends and they hold the truss rod in at an angle. This video is a just a sign of laziness maybe you should actually try making a neck worth using.
man so passionate about single action truss rods. double action rods are great and no need to drill at an angle using the better rod. I wouldn't say "lazy" , it's just different than you like to see.
This guy is doing this with limited hand tools showing that it can be done at home with limited tools. The truss rod he uses is standard in today's necks and like others said doesn't need to be angled.
