I did this exact thing about 4-5 years ago and was fortunate enough to do it when the keyboard arms were only $22 each. I bought a long 24-outlet power strip, four 4x8 sheets of garage slatwall which I painted, and added aluminum inserts to boost strength. I also bought 10 pairs of keyboard arms and realized I needed more a year or two later, but the prices had skyrocketed. The cost is double what I originally paid, but there is a simple solution to house more equipment: Pick up a few MDF shelves and some 1x2 lumber from your local big box store. Put the 1x2 along one edge to prevent synths from sliding off angled shelves, and it also prevents the MDF from warping under the weight. I painted mine black, drilled three 3" holes in each and added desk grommets for cables, and it works like a charm. It gives me 4 ft of space for every pair of keyboard arms. All my shelves except one have at least 2 pieces of gear on them, and I have an extra set of keyboard arms spare now. Honestly it is not the best setup for "making music", but it is an amazing setup for turning everything on and having a blast. It also takes up a lot less space than keyboard stands do.

That was my immediate thought. I also use extra long pine boards to extend my desk area. No need to even drill.

This seems like the perfect solution for me. I was actually looking for a wall mounted stand, but the slat wall makes it so much more flexible. I have a small home studio and keyboard stand legs tend to really get in the way, especially if I am swinging around from my PC to the keyboard. This way, no legs to get in the way. Seems cost effective. You just have to be really sure where you want things. I like it. Thanks for sharing this.

Really good video I'm glad that solution worked for you, i had a very similar dilemma, but i was able to find a used Ultimate support Apache A-frame for the equivalent of $60, add $20 for new parts and elbow grease, I'm very happy with the results, the jaspers would've been ridiculously expensive to import, and I'm afraid the wall solution wouldn't have worked out for me, but your results with it are amazing

I've been loving my Jaspers setup for all my synth modules, keyboard and more. I have their 3 tier stand and i cut some boards to work as shelves so i wouldnt have to buy a zillion extra arms, which are expensive. I have the arms slanted downward so i added lips to the front of the boards. I also drilled cable holes in the boards, and the bottom board is deep enough that all the cables and power strips can hide back there. Its super compact and all on wheels, which is great for moving it away from the wall to reorganize things.

Great video! I just got a Jaspers stand setup last weekend and it is a GREAT stand. I got one on wheels which is really nice for my small studio space. I really like this slatwall approach as well and think a combination might be great for me. The slat wall is easier to reconfigure and potentially leaves a lot more floor space available.
@TeftyMeems

Yep, one big benefit is the near "cableless" look you can get if you manage the cables by the power strip. You can also add more slat sheets to the top or bottom if your space allows it.

I was looking at keyboard stands on Amazon and ran across the slatwall keyboard arms. That sold me on the idea of using slatwall. My studio isn't very big and is in the same room as a home gym. So not having a bulky rack on the floor is a great idea. I am glad I found your video so I can see what a setup like this looks like. The LED light strips in the grooves is a fantastic idea. Your video has sealed the deal on me going with slatwall for my keyboards and synths. Now I just need to save up my pennies so I can afford to get the slatwall and 8 pack of keyboard arms. Might as well get the 8 pack to save some money and have plenty of space for stuff so I have room for my current grear and room for new grear.
@jennoscura2381
@jennoscura2381 Год назад
I changed my mind in the slatwall. Up against the wall I was going to use I have a table for my desktop synths, drum machines, and Eurorack. I plan on putting my oscilloscope on the table. It's heavy and vertically oriented. So it would be a bit awkward to put on a slatwall. I recently picked up a 5 tier Jasper's A frame from Thomann. It's cheaper than what you showed. With shipping to the US it was $302.88. For now this should fit the bill. Instead of the table I could have a plank across 4 keyboard arms. So perhaps I may do slatwall in the future. But most likely I will still have the jasper's rack. So on the right of my desk would be the jasper's and on the left of the desk the slatwall. I have also been thinking about putting up some slatwall on the back wall for less used keyboards.

I was in a similar boat and did the wall mount Standtastic bundle (it’s at the bottom of the sweetwater page). For my small stuff, I put piece of adjustable shelving between the arms. It works, but I really like how you can do independent angles in the same row. I’d probably do a slat wall if I was doing it again (now that I know it’s a thing)

I'm still trying to find a stand that accommodates the smaller synths I have (mostly desktop Volca's, a couple of Arturia keyboards etc). A Jaspers would be sweet but kinda out of my price range right now. Slatwall would not work as I'm currently living in a rental and I can't fix stuff to the walls.

I ordered my jaspers rack from Thoman and it arrived on the east coast in just over 2 days and shipping was only $38! I also realized I needed more mounts after the fact so it wasn’t cost effective to pay shipping for that. BUT I got a few pieces of 1x12 boards and made 4 shelves for my rack. Slatwall wouldn't work for me at the moment, because I'm renting and I don't think my landlord would appreciate it, but this is such a great share that I can see this being very attractive for many. It looks so much neater than the Jaspers 'scafolding' look and more pro. I'm gonna keep this idea in reserve for when I do move. I hope I can get all the slatwall gear here in the UK. I have a jaspers 150b stand, the angled one. The wall slats sound cool actually i wasn't able to do that in my living space, but the wall flushed power supply is an interesting additional solution. What I have done is on my upper tier I placed one of my two separate shielded multi power supplies, each having about 12 plugs. Since my low frequency expander has a very small length cord (I could have gotten a longer cord but the adapter I purchased has a small one), I placed that psu on the upper tier; there is room just behind it to put velcro strips to hold that. But that ended up working out in a weird way since my mixer next to the stand has a small cord also. So that spot for multi psu number 1 is the optimal spot. The other multi psu (shielded power strip) sits on my amp next to the other side of the stand. For my setup this has worked so far because I have a lot of gear to plug in. But it does take a bit of space. If my living situation were different I think the slats sound like an excellent way to go space wise.

i love the video it helped me visualize a rack, but i am wanting something portable. Gibraltar probably has my best options. 2x59" straight drum rack tube and 2x SC-GRSTLA Road Series Standard T-Leg (4.6" height): [those together is 5.5 feet tall] the width needs to fit my 88 key Midi controller which is 54" long so will also need 59" tubes for my horizontals. Later I'll probably add 2x 30" poles extensions to the height (making around 6 foot). i can even put studio monitor mounts on the side or on top, probably side for height adjustment. A few Power Rack T-Clamps for each tare and SC-GEMC Electronic Mount Arms will hold the units in place on the rack. i will try to do a video on my other channel when its finished

Great looking setup and awesome review. My question is how is this holding up by now? I found the exact same arms on stringswing and amazon, however, the pot welds on the amazon one is my greatest concern, although that price is nice! I have purchased stands in the past over Amazon and they tend to have cheap Chinese made welds that for me eventually broke.... with 7 guitars on the stand, so the welds are my only real concern, so I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks again for the killer video!

Cool. Although I live inside the European Union, the same as Thomann, so no import fees for me. We also generally have brick walls in Europe. Still, you start paying import fees only at $800? It used to be something like €20 inside the EU, but they removed that lower limit, and now you always pay fees. And you pay VAT (value added tax), which is anything between 18% and 25%, depending on what country you live in.

So now I’m torn on whether to grab a jaspers 4d-145B 4 tiered stand and add an extra set of arms and just place a wooden board flat on one of the tiers for all my smaller synths/effects/mixer. Looks like shipped i can grab this all for around $350. I was curious how wide you can go with this slat kit from amazon? I have a couple full sized synths. Anyways great setup and now you have me thinking! Cheers!

@blaster3744 Год назад
Very good idea. Did you take any precautions around the tip of the arm to make sure the synth would not jump out and fall. Like adding some foam or somtehing . I would just be afraid of a synth just falling. Oh and yeah , got the issue with korg minilogue XD drivers , but theres a good video on how to use the korg midi port deinstaller to free up one of the midi port between 1 and 10, cos if the driver is installed using a midi port above 10 , you screwed 😂 , no need to switch to Mac 😂
@cloud_noises

Cool idea, but my concern about any setup like this is always how well it works ergonomically. If I have to reach a weird location to play a synth, I'm gonna be less inclined to spend time messing with it. If you're just storing stuff there and moving it to a different stand when you use it, or if you're just sequencing stuff, then I could see it being pretty useful. But otherwise I feel like it would be a hinderance (the solution being just own less gear, haha).
@jennoscura2381
@jennoscura2381 Год назад
It all depends on what gear you have. I like to control things via MIDI. So for me it wouldn't be a problem to have certain keyboards or synths that I can't play sitting down. I would just control them from another keyboard or MIDI controller. In general I think it's a good idea to have things setup with MIDI so they can be considered via a master keyboard. I really like layering sounds. So I am frequently playing multiple keyboards and synths at the same time via MIDI. But all that said; Slatwall may not be the perfect solution. I plan on installing Slatwall for keyboards and synths. But I also have a two tier keyboard stand that I will keep using. So there will be multiple keyboards I can play sitting down. As well as my Arturia Keystep Pro.
@N-trepid1
@N-trepid1 Год назад
@@jennoscura2381 I had the same concerns as Walter-but to your point Im frequently layering synth via a midi controller. If Im playing separate part (base and lead) on two diff synths, I can just position them accordingly on the wall. I see you can change the angle of the supports, so you are not playing the instruments (at your sitting level) at such an extreme angle. Again, great video and you have a new subscriber ;)
@jennoscura2381
@jennoscura2381 Год назад
@@N-trepid1 my thought is to have the master keyboard at playing height. Above that would be something I might want to play directly. It would be angled slightly. Thank you so much for this video. I have a Jaspers 6 tier stand which took around a month (!!) to get delivered from Thomann in Germany. I have a 6-tier, a 2 tier, plus a modular shelving system from Ikea. My collection (currently about 20 synths) has grown too much to invest in more Jaspers stands at the prices they now cost. What's worse is I cannot hook anything up that sits on my Ikea modular simply due to its design. This slatwall system looks to be a perfect solution. I control everything from a Push 2 or a controller keyboard anyway, so all of them can be up on a wall and out of the way. My only concern is the strength of PVC slatwall for larger synths (30-40lbs each). Any insights on the load-bearing limitations of this PVC system? 100lbs PSF sounds okay, but really how strong is this stuff? 3,200lbs per 8 x 4 panel? Is my math correct?

I’ve been in really nice control rooms before and the proper placement of speakers and treatment basically takeover the space. Not really conducive for writing (unless the space is large). Great video, I also find it weird Jaspers does not have a US distributor! WTH. In any case, I am in this same situation and I thank you for this video. I might give this a shot.

How’s this been looking back now? I’ve been considering this option for my setup, but I would have an Arturia PolyBrute where your summit is here, and the PolyBrute is the heaviest synth I’ve ever seen! (Summit is 22lbs and PB is 44)

Still prefer the look of an A-stand which I was lucky to get used 3-tier ones with an option to add a 4th, On-stage brand for about $200 for two, but this is definitely an interesting idea!

Oooo interesting. Didn't realize there's a 4th tier addon. That's good to know. What I found with most stands that aren't Jaspers is the widths are limited so doing two medium keyboards on one row (Pro 3 and Take 5) isn't really viable.

I would be totally worried about the slats giving way. How do you know how much weight the small lip of material can handle? A couple quality synths, and your pulling a lot more weight than some dress shirts hanging in a showroom. My Kawai keyboard is heavy as hell. I looked for metal slat wall. I didnt really find anything.

I wanted to do this in my setup, but I was curious how it would feel to play on. Especially the synths that are not standing or sitting height. #oldmanbackproblems
@TeftyMeems

I should've mentioned it in the video but overall really solid. There's a bit of give/bounce in the arms but nothing that feels loose. For the most stability the slat arms feel the best when right next to the studs in the wall. But I did sessions for a good 3 weeks on the keyboards and they feel great on the wall.

Hey @TeftyMeems or anyone else who has built this same slatwall project.. how much approximate space do ya end up between the various tiers/synths on a vertical plane? I realize depends on which slat you place the arms but I’m thinking of building this same 4x4 crownwall and concerned the controls on my synths will be inaccessible due to synth above it. Do ya end up with more space between tiers than say a jaspers 4,5, or 6 multi tiered stand? I realize each slat is 6”, so in theory with 4 tiers I would end up with 12” between each right? I’m trying to think which gives me more room between tiers… this slatwall project or a jaspers. I don’t mind ordering one but if slatwall gets me more space on a vertical tier level then I’ll go that route. Thx! Oh also where do you find the 4x4 dual 3” combo slatwall?

I'm currently dealing with this. I like this idea, but I also feel that the Jaspers and BlackPantherSystems, have some perks. The thing that's preventing me from doing this, is it has to be connected to a wall. I like the idea of being able to move my gear around, if needed. I have to make my mind up soon, because I hate having gear clutter. I was thinking about getting a Jaspers or Black Panther, and a decent studio desk. I have tools, and experience with carpentry and furniture building, but wood gets super heavy, and I would hate to end up with a 1000lb desk. I've thought about engineering a desk, so I could easily break it down into pieces to make moving easier, but I'm not too sure if it's worth it, due to the cost of plywood, and hardware. I'm also concerned about designing something, building it, and then not liking it, due to a mess up in the design. I also deal with chronic pain, so I don't enjoy building things like I used to. I've thought about getting this, and then reinforcing a piece of 3/4 plywood, and adding a frame to the bottom, with wheels, so I could move it around, but it would be heavy. I could at least make it easy to disassemble. I love having hardware, but making the right choices when paying premium prices, is super difficult at times.

Are those $42 a piece for the arms? You have 16 of them plus the wall. That’s two 5 tier Jaspers

I've got a pair of four tiered Standtastic A-frames for my setup. They were great when I had all of my gear setup in my garage. But since I moved everything into a smaller room, they take up way too much floor space. It's almost like having a couple of synth pyramids in my studio. It's probably about time for me to look into getting a slatwall setup.

I am installing the Crownwall right now, but the studs in the wall are very odd. 1st stud is 12 inches in from doorframe. Next stud is 11 inch on center. Next is 24 inches on center. Next is 9.5 inches on center. If I center the middle screw of the slatwall panel, the studs to the left and right of center are still about 7 inches in from the edge of each side of the slatwall. I am going to call the company tomorrow and ask suggestions. Just posting here in case anyone is doing research so that you know you may run into an oddity along the way. UPDATE: I just went ahead and spaced the screws to the studs as equidistant as possible to compete the Crownwall. Used the same brackets as described in the vid. It is completely sturdy. I’ve got 3 keyboards, a rack module and an MG12XU. They all fit flawlessly. The bottom keyboard is an 88 weighted key Triton at piano height so I can sit right down and play. Absolutely fantastic. Thank you Tefty and Meems for thIs AMAZING idea.

I never found keyboard multi level stands conducive to sound creation. You can't really see the screens well and always feels combersome. Yet to find the best solution. This is a cool setup though. 😎

Funny how this is in my feed AFTER I buy the 3 tier on-stage deal🤦🏽‍♂️. BUT!😃👆🏽 my plan is to place a plank on the lowest level and possibly two “DJ” laptop stands on that-place a yet to be purchased Rev2 on the plank and maybe both my RefaceDX and CS on the DJ stands because there’s a larger gap from the lowest level to the 2nd tier. Seems like wasted space. Then the Deepmind6 and maybe a drum module or boutique synths on the same tier and then my beloved MS2000 on top. As a renter I prefer not to do the wall slats.
