Update on the synth slat wall! It's been a year and a few people have asked how it's worked out so far. So here's my thoughts...

"It appears to be structurally sound..." Not gonna lie, I started to brace when you said that out loud and started to press on the Roland. 🤣

I did this about 7 or 8 years ago when the keyboard arms were still cheap, and I ended up with a huge 8'x4' area that has served me very well. The one feature I added was a set of eight 1'x8' shelves that I made from 1'x8' MDF, with a 1"x2" piece of pine for stability and preventing gear from sliding off the shelf. This allows me to use only 2 keyboard arms per 8' shelf, and you can slap a lot of gear onto an 8' shelf. For example, one shelf has a mixer and 2 drum machines, others have 2 small keyboards, or an MPC One and 2 Roland Boutiques with keyboards. Those shelves really expanded the amount of gear it can house and with a huge 24-outlet adapter, you can operate a ton of stuff. Pretty sure my electrical will not handle 24 outlets, but hey, the option is there.

I built two of these in my studio. I also have the wide studs, and used a 4x4 1/2 inch plywood sheet to add stability. It works fantastically, and doesn’t add much to cost. You can have Home Depot cut the sheets to size for, even.

It's a neat solution. But i realise my Jasper stand allows me to get behind easily. I concede i have a large room and the clearance is 1.5m. Plugging and testing everything had to be painful the first time with all devices against the wall. Dont worry about the wobbly stuff, it's the same with brackets on a stand.

You could also put a particle board across all the arms and then put the devices on the baord, to help distribute the load.

Got some Behringer synths on the wall? *Starts typing unnecessarily angry comment* Great setup! I hope the gear buying bug doesn’t bite me so I would need this.

If everything is always pluged in you should get a socket which protects of over voltage from lightning strikes. If you live in a area of the world where thunderstorms happen of course 😅 But great project looks really nice 😊

Nice 👍. I have resilient channel soundproofing so drilling into the studs is a no-no. My compromise is using IKEA Ivar uprights and suitably angled MDF shelves mounted and reinforced using angle aluminium.

Nice! I looked into the IKEA options. I was super close to going that route as well.

Good video! Very good info. If you're ever bothered by the bouncy issue just add a sheet of 1/2" ply (not MDF) and you'll be golden. I saw someone mention 3/4" ply in the comments and yeah that would be overkill and pretty expensive but would also help give you a bit of a tornado shelter functionality.🤣 If you've ever tried to move a 4x8 sheet of it you'll know what I mean. Again great vid! BTW, just got one of your expansion packs and have REALLY enjoyed it! Have been messing with some vocal mangling plugins on my MPC and needed some vocals that sounded better than my squawky voice and... can't believe how great your stuff sounds! Super duper great layout on the clips to make them ... errr... me sound like a pro!! My GF heard me messing around with them and said "I" sounded really good.. LOL! Thanks!! I'll definitely be picking up some more!! (Don't worry I gave you and Meems the credit you deserved!)

This reminds me of a really heavy-duty version of a pegboard. Good to get a clear view of positives and negatives ... it seems pretty sweet honestly, though I'm not sure how I'd deal with only having one keyboard really playable (at the proper elevation) at any one time. Motorized slat wall next! heh.

I bought the Jasper stand. Got a 5 tiers model. I tried doing slanted shelves but ran into a bunch of issues. It was expensive but it shipped fast. There's no wobble or bounce and I can angle things better to see the synths UI without having anything hanging over it.

I am in the process of selling some synthesizers because I can not keep them connected at all times due to space issues. This slat wall idea might save some of them. I will look into this right now. Thanks.

Very nicely done! I have a Jaspers stand myself which is great and very sturdy - but really difficult to change up. For example, to add another bar you'd actually have to get everything off because you can only add bars by taking off the entire side as the stupid connectors can’t be split in two (major design fault imo).
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Marc! For future projects I'll still probably get a Jaspers where it doesn't make sense for a slat wall.
@michaelgehringmusic8440
@michaelgehringmusic8440 10 месяцев назад
I ran into a similar issue with stud lines and decided to mount 3/4 ply to the wall first so I could anchor the slat wall every 8 inches with all the load transferred to the studs.
@keithmurray9241
@keithmurray9241 4 месяца назад
3/4 Ply??? You don't even need a WALL!! LOL!! That's gotta be expensive! But yeah... I'm guessing it's solid as a rock now.
@michaelgehringmusic8440
@michaelgehringmusic8440 4 месяца назад
@@keithmurray9241 I did the ply because the underlying studs are not spaced properly or plentiful enough. I didn't build the wall so sometimes you have to improvise.

Wow those Philips Hue light strips look like they throw a lot of glare. I would want something shrouded. Maybe it is just the camera angle and in practice you don't have it. I have two Jaspers stands already. The rectangular stands, not the A-frames, are more stable IMO (I have one of each). I am not going to put a slat wall into our current house. Maybe the next house, which when we head for one will be our retirement home.
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 10 месяцев назад
So that glare is my fault! I forgot I had a 'bloom' filter on my lens that day. Makes things more dreamy, but also adds more glow and glare to lights.

I have definitely considered doing this in my studio. My biggest issue I have with my current stand is that the controls are blocked by the synths on top. Do you ever find it cumbersome to use the knobs on your Summit using the slat wall?
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 10 месяцев назад
I set it up for my height and viewing angle, so if something was blocked uncomfortably, I'd adjust move things around (slat location and arm length). So for the Summit, when I stand in front of it, I see everything and can play it comfortably. When I sit at the Fantom, same thing, aside from the pads on the right side. But I don't really use the pads so it doesn't matter to me as much.

Really cool video. When you say "the phillips stuff flickers really bad when it comes to lighting" does that mean it does so only if you are making videos or also IRL? If a person does not intend to make videos then would the phillips lighting be a good choice? Many thanks

@@MaxOstrovtheheadyhive cool thank you
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 10 месяцев назад
Yup what Max said, in person they do not flicker. For video, if you're shooting in 24fps and have the shutter at half or 1/50th or 1/40th, you'll get flicker or more commonly 'banding'. Which means an extra process in finishing a video.

Yea, nice - But how are you coping with the gear right at the top? Step Ladder? LOL. That aside, it is really tidy. Regarding the stud placement - you could have put a horizontal bracer across all 3 studs, then you could just screw into the horizontal where you wanted..... ?

Top gear is easily reachable. It's not prime location, so I don't use it as much, but I also don't use all of my gear at the same for each project. I usually pick and choose 👍 But yeah, reach is no problem because I planned it accordingly.

Do you guys get an electrician involved to add enough power to the home for all this gear? I always worry that just 1 or 2 standard circuits isn't going to cover it. 🤷
@keithmurray9241
@keithmurray9241 4 месяца назад
FYI, most synth's only pull 20-30 watts maybe.. Fantom 07 more like 160 Watts (big boy)... but consider a hair dryer pulls 1500 watts. Also... while it looks pretty to have them all on at once, remember when you're cussing at your electric bill at the end of the month... turning everything on has a cost. Also.. every time you have gear powered up that you're not using... if there's a lightning strike or power surge.. that's one more thing that might get fried for no reason if you're not even using it.
