Building a West Greenland Kayak, Step by Step

In this visual overview of the skin on frame kayak building process we construct our West Greenland kayak design. Only slightly adapted from the original museum kayak, I've chosen to focus on this particular kayak over the years because it is surprisingly user friendly compared to most true arctic hunting kayaks. Historic kayaks add richness and diversity to my paddling lifestyle and constantly inform my modern skin on frame kayak design work.

A quick note, Due to COVID I wasn't able to get video of the kayak in the video on the water, so I tacked on an edit from a rolling session a few years ago. Enjoy!

WOW! What an absolutely gorgeous kayak; in 1924, when my Dad was just 20 years old, he was offered the position of Wireless Operator on a Canadian Government Expedition aboard the CGS Arctic, a sail AND coal powered wooden ship that was mastered by Captain Joseph E. Bernier, a venerable and long time explorer on behalf of Canada. During the 3 month trip my Dad got a chance to try out an Inuit-made kayak, exactly like your kayak, at Pond Inlet and after his successful paddle he was presented with a beautiful hand-made 26" model with all the fittings, which I now cherish in memory of his trip......he LOVED the Far North!

My first SOF Kayak was a resurrection of a "Crossbreed" originally made in New Brunswick, Canada. Learned so much just from this video, I am likely to try another SOF Kayak in the future. The kayak rolls we breath taking and executed at a level and calmness that made me watch that segment over and over.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ru-vid.comUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Wow wish we can start building like that once again, most of the alaskan native way is almost gone. I planed to bring back the old ways of life we yupiks know. Need to know more about the ways to help my people get to know each others better and start to bring back the good old days.

Excellente vidéo de démonstration de la construction d'un canoé fait main sur mesure, de l'art, il faut du temps de la Patience et de la volonté très beau projet il faut aussi un local pour travailler convenablement ! Mais ,il sera solide car vous utilisez du tissu de verre de la résine et du rowing etc. .vous avez effectué un excellent travail une fois fini .à partager avec tous les personnes qui pratiquent du canoé. Can you send a tutorial for the kind of knot you use to tie down the bars? The brownish solution you apply before the resin, is that epoxy primer? Great video, pleasure to watch!

Something interesting that I learned in the Anchorage Museum one day in 2015: modern science has been unable to improve on the Eskimo kayak. It is perfect.

@@AaronBrand No doubt it is the pinnacle of modern technology. I simply related something which I thought was interesting that I learned one day in the Anchorage Museum.

@@MarsFKA it’s absolutely true, though. Thousands of years of trial and error have produced amazingly well engineered designs. It’s the desired capabilities that will dictate how a design might change. A Greenland-style paddle is another example of a lasting design that functions as well as (and for some functions better than) more modern designs. Paddling is fun; I hope you get a chance to try it!

I really enjoyed this video! I wonder if using softwood dowels is going to cause the boat trouble in the future. Your building technique is similar to timber frame construction, where they use hardwoods for their pegs, typically, hickory. Just a thought.

Absolutely amazing! The craftsmanship is superlative. I'm an amateur boatbuilder, but I just do stitch and glue or chine log method. This is definitely above my pay grade! Also I really like the music; what and who is it?

Not at all, this is wayyy easier than stitch and glue. This is a 60hr build and the woman in the video had never built one before. Two years ago a 12 year old girl built one and did everything herself but the tablesaw work. You can see her build on our site on the Student Builds page!

It looks like the cockpit framed by the straight members will be about 6 inches wide, then suddenly you put the coaming on and it's a round hole, what did I miss? Beautiful boat, great video.

Those two straight boards are the back deck stringers. The cockpit sits in front of those.
