Building a Work Shop: Framing Walls and the Two Hammer Challenge

During this second installment of Building a Work Shop, we start framing and standing our wall sections. We also have a little fun with the RR Building Two Hammer Challenge. If you haven't been following RRBuildings on Instagram, then you might not know what the Two Hammer Challenge is. It's hard, and its a lot of fun, so stay tuned as I announce the competition over on my instagram channel.
I also talk a little bit about how to rig a load before just flying wall sections and invite you to comment below what you think about how we do it. Maybe I could be a little safer or more efficient.

With rigging it's important to remember that tension in the strap only matches the weight of the load when your strap is perfectly vertical. More angle in the strap means more tension for the same load. If you have straps at 45 degrees like your configuration, each strap is "feeling" tension equal to 100% of the load, so two straps rated at 7200 lbs actually only buddy up to move 7200 lbs when rigged at 45 degrees. If you somehow managed to rig and lift with your straps perfectly horizontal, (can't guarantee I remember this right) it goes all the way up to 200% of load weight as tension in each strap.

Nail guns can be pretty dangerous as seen in 2:40. I've got a nail shoot back at me cause I hit a knot in the wood. Nails can go left or right, puncture your hand or even shoot back at you. Small chance, but I've seen it.

As a former US Army Pathfinder and Air Assault certified person, what your trying to get at is called, "tensile strength". I never dealt with anything less than a 10K sling set and most of the time we used 25K sling sets. Take a look at reach pendant. Perhaps this may be able to help you in your skill set.

I have seen quite a few different methods for post frame. Yours is a well thought out system. You omit the blocking between the wall girts but make up for it with the extra heavy ring shank nails. Predrilled purlin with 6 inch nails are another way to save on blocking. Very interesting system. So everything hangs on these very heavy duty fasteners instead of stacking wood on wood like traditional framing methods. Good fasteners! I assume that they don't rust or pull out over fifty years or so? I worked in earthquake country where we were subject to shaking every year. We found alot of fasteners fail over time when subjected to some stresses. I never trusted hanging wood on a nail but it seems to work well for you. Great videos, thanks for "posting".

What he does has been the norm for more than a few decades, or since this type of framing came to be.
@michaelvangundy226
@michaelvangundy226 5 лет назад
@@Joshua79C No. The "norm" is to stack wood on top of each other in vertical compression using fasteners to keep it from shifting. This is hanging wood with fasteners in shear and little to no compression.
@Joshua79C
@Joshua79C 5 лет назад
That is the whole points with construction method the post are what bear the weight and depending on foundation being used also takes on the weight and distributes it into and around the soil underneath. See "Construction" section, its basically how most skyscrapers are built, the wall is a curtain in this aspect of framing. Ever since it was conceived in the early 1900's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_building_framing

It would be a nice touch to end each of your build video series with a tour of the finished building in full operation. For example, when you have finished this shop build, do a short video with all the customer's tools and machinery installed and working. I would imagine that, since your customers have given you permission to record the build of the shop itself, and post it to You Tube, they would be only too pleased to show off their new acquisition when it is all finished? I do appreciate that each contract may be many miles apart, and making time to travel and shoot a video possibly, several weeks after you have completed your work on the project may not be possible either due to distance or time restraints. So maybe the owner of the new build could be encouraged to shoot their own video and send it to you as a post script to your construction video?

Kyle - it May be a trick of the light or the video but the large concrete screws look as though though the head bearing onto the bracket is pretty marginal either because the hole In the bracket is too large or perhaps it was intended that a washer be used.

In the UK our lifting straps also state the date the strap cannot be used after and must be disposed of. Constant lifting and sunlight causes degradation of the material. It’s the same for such items as hard hats. All our hard hats have use by dates because the plastic is being constantly degraded by sunlight. Also notice Greg etc never wear hard hats when erecting the framework, which I thought would have been essential in this type of work. God forbid should they have an accident I don’t think they would receive any compensation In the UK the very first thing erected on a site is the site safety notice board at the entrance of any construction site about to start with specific safety rules relevant to the type of work to be carried out. In your particular case it would probably be safety shoes, hard hats, high viz jackets and authorised personal only to operate machinery ie person must have successfully passed a qualification in safe use of said machine. It sounds over kill, but it works and we have very little accidents.
