The way Marta has her hand on the back of Moceanu's neck and at the same time acting like she's tussling her hair to comfort her is so eerie. Kerri wasn't on a mission, she was force to do a second vault because of scare tactics. If they didn't care whether or not Dominique Moceanu's leg was broken, why the heck would they care about Kerri's ankle?

Marta Karolyi typically used her fingers in a claw-like grip on the backs of the gymnasts' necks and she'd do this to both exert her control and dominance, physically and psychologically, over the gymnasts and especially to let them know when she was angry by digging her nails into their skin. Seeing her doing this 'claw-like' grip lets you know she's exerting her control and maybe letting the gymnasts know she's angry with them. It's awful to see.

I commend her for her bravery because she actually was blacklisted by the community for speaking up.. and in my opinion.. she truly is one of the first representatives for those athletes to make a change. She was in a very tough spot where those girls confided in her but to respect their trust, she couldn’t say anything, but rather be a backbone and a supporter and encourage all those women with secrets to come out and be brave. The second individual spot is won by an all around gymnast/s, not a specialist - although it's won for the team and they choose who they want to have the spot. I'd switch Morgan in for Laurie and Mcykala Skinner for Eaker. Kara's beam does not hold up internationally so unless she changes it dramatically and gets rid of the ring jumps she won't win any medals anyway.

In my opinion, realistically, it will be: simone biles (because obviously), morgan hurd (Team USA needs her bars), sunisa lee (Team USA needs her bars), and grace mccallum/one of the brand new elite like Kayla DiCello, and Jade Carey as the 1 individiual spot. I like eaker and skinner, but skinner's form is consistently lacking (great difficulty, but loses points with lack of pointed toes, not reaching 180 degrees, etc), and eaker is fab! But my picks above like biles and jade are PERFECTION on vault and floor, but Team USA really needs great all-rounders with great bars routines, and eaker, memmel, skinner, etc do not have that, unfortunately. The 4 person team is forcing the US team members to be strong on ALL events.

Athletes will force themselves, to the point where they compete against the coaches wishes. The thing is the control that is excerted on young gymnasts. @@evacody1249 Exactly. I remember as a student of (Shorin Ryu) Karate back when I saw the movie aged about 12, many decades ago now, I watched that 'crane kick' and realised it would not only be useless in the real world but just how easy it would be to defend against and how it puts anyone trying to do it so off-balance and vulnerable it was rather ludicrous. I know they put it in for dramatic effect but the martial artist in me would prefer some realism and to this day people seem to think it's a real kick that can be effective in combat!

There are some differences marked by the team element. Elite gymnastics also isn't always abusive.
@MD-722
@MD-722 3 года назад
@@MuzzyBarker Elite gymnastics is not _"always so abusive,"_ that is a very naive and sweeping statement; especially as the NCAA is the biggest silent culprit in all of this. Part of the reason abuse is so rampant in the U.S. is because if a gymnast doesn't peak by the time they are 18 and has to turn professional in order to afford their training etc (e.g. Jordyn Weiber), they have to forfeit their collegiate eligibility and subsequently their athletic scholarships. Thus as a result, American gymnasts are pushed so hard at young ages because their window of opportunity has been kept so small. Also the NCAA are FULLY aware of this and could have made exemptions for gymnasts YEARS ago, but to this day they have not.
@tosh4771
@tosh4771 3 года назад
@@MD-722 The ncaa recently changed some of their rules due to the Pac-10 basically forcing them to, but it amazes me that they never took into account the differences in being able to compete in gymnastics at a young age. They made exceptions for baseball if you were semi-pro, but didn't make the same for gymnasts.

Great episode once again. Although it annoys me to hear Americans talk about the 2 per country rule being unfair when America was one of the countries pushing for it back in the day. Was it 2000 when 3 Romanians stood on the podium? America needs to understand that one of the reasons they are top now is because of the 2 per country rule. It allowed their gymnasts to qualify for finals and get the sport noticed by the public. And of course with US money there's now a fully equipped gym in every town, if not more than 1 and all the worlds best coaches have flocked there for the money. Americans need to be a little more understanding of their privileges and advantages.

The fact of the matter is that Kerri had the weight of an entire nation on her shoulders. And a CHILD should never have to carry that burden. She suffered a minor injury and then had no choice but to vault again and seriously injury herself. And for what? The cost of her health and well-being. Not the gold medal. A calculator would have shown you they would have won regardless. Our NUMBER ONE job as coaches is to kept these kids safe. They failed her. She’s not a hero for vaulting on an injury. She’s a victim of a broken system... that’s still broken. It’s our job, as the new generation of coaches, to build a better environment than what our predecessor experienced.
