I'm not sure but i think it would've helped if valerie had been better prepared. that said, i had never heard of lip roll before this and i'd assume regular viewers and listeners probably like the way the hosting of the show is handled eventhough i personally didn't.

Personally, I think the host just likes to hear herself talk. There was no preparation on her part and most of her questions were built on the most mundane stereotypes like she just doesn't know any better. And then she would cut them off and tell of this one time when she did something amazing and somehow nobody cared. I don't want to judge valerie but I can't shake the feeling that she's too self-absorbed to be a host I would ever enjoy watching. And, sadly, she didn't manage to intrigue me enough to check if I'm right or wrong.

Essentially, the host can be summed up in the following monologue that, sadly, is only *partly* fictitious: "I don't really know you but my team does, so I'm just going to let them ask the questions. I don’t watch liproll much but I do love matt and Marisha. It seemed like the host was interrupting every time they answered a question with her own anecdote. It became less about the audience meeting and getting to know these new guests and more about the host almost making it about herself. I’m a person who thinks it’s important to listen to what others are saying, not necessarily inserting a “mm” or “yeah” ever few words they try and get out and then taking what they were saying and twisting it into making it about the host. Yes, it’s good to show that you are listening to the person speaking but I could not make it through this podcast with the number of interruptions made on the hosts part. I like the idea of this, but it’s a dislike from me.

@@LipRollSeries okay but that's not what an interview is supposed to be. If she was unaware of what they do fine, but the fact that she seemed genuinely uninterested in anything matt and marisha had to say is a huge issue. She interrupts them and talks for 3/4's of the time in a room with 4 people. Hopefully over time you learn to love the bits of "I'm singing and bla bla bla bla bla" but maybe you won't and that's ok. We just want to thank you for watching, we get this criticism often and discuss it in our meetings and ultimately as a new show we'd like to let our hosts open up. @@LipRollSeries I think that criticism is a bit harsh in the comments here. I mean, I get where people are coming from, but it is a way to relate and connect with a guest. Was the interview not fun? Yes, if the you related to a guest with your own anecdotes for every single question, it would be too much, but in moderation it's a tool one can use to relate to the guests and make them open up :) Like you said, you're all just starting out, and to find that balance is a process, I'm sure it'll only get better from here!

The thing is, I think, that she was not very familiar with the concept. So, as a human being, you tend to try to connect bringing this concept to something you are familiar with. And it works. Matt and Marisha were guests on her show with her audience, it's important for loyal viewers to not feel alienated so I totally understand it. All us clicking on a RU-vid interview of our favorite D&D players are honestly passing through so this interview wasn't meant for us but we are fortunate to get to enjoy it. Just something to keep in mind. Also, I don't know if you've had to explain your D&D obsession to people that haven't played yet but them explaining it to her reminded me of my doing that which made me smile. I really wanted to learn more about what Marisha had to say about corporate entities and their animated series, but Valerie had to milk the Pretty Woman reference. I would’ve been fine with just referencing “big mistake!” but she had to add the side comment about people just knowing the reference. I was, like, “let Marisha talk!” Valerie keeps apologizing for trying to derail the conversation, but her apologies seems so tongue-in-cheek...

@@LipRollSeries Out of curiosity, did anyone on the staff show Valerie even a 5 sec clip of Matt / Marisha before filming? I totally understand that D&D is a weird topic for the uninitiated. But Valerie is a vocal coach, so there's still a LOT of common ground with these two. Why not discuss the challenges of Matt's many accents? Just trying to give an objective opinion, but this wasn’t the best interview. It would help if the interviewer the least bit of cursory research into who they’re about to talk to and what it is they do. It would avoid cringey statements like “is it like fortnight?” It unfortunately meant that half the conversation where Matt and Marisha were introducing your listeners or viewers to the main thing they do, they instead were talking about fortnight and some throwaway event that does not really represent what they do or what they’re about at all, all because your main interviewer needed some point of reference to understand... due to her lack of research. This continued on throughout I feel, it became more about her trying to figure it out and relate it to something she can understand rather than the guests.

27:40 WHAT IS ASHLEY GOING TO DO!!!! Also constructive criticism right? We don't want to put people down we want to make people better. I can tell you do want to know more about Matt and Marisha and I think because they are from a different sort of culture than the artist you usually work with that you felt the need to find common ground which explains why you kept referring to your experience so you could find that commonality. Perhaps leave out the details of your experiences when you find common ground and leave it to the interviewees to ask if they feel they would like to know more. If not then move on. I am really bad at doing that, because the minute I find commonality I cling to it like it's a life line and tend to ramble on to sort of fill in dead air in a conversation. Oh Or, mention you have the same experience and ask the interviewees what their take on it is instead. Brian W. Foster the host of Between the Sheets on Critical Role is a master of this, and I really appreciate the way he interviews people. I actually prefer the vibe in this video, cause it feels more like an honest conversation than an interview. It seems to me that a lot of people have the idea of an interview type of interaction getting in the way of appreciating podcasts and a more "unofficial" style of conversing. And her talking about herself and her experiences is just a way of relating and responding to what they're talking about, but I get why some people might misinterpret that as her bragging.
