I ran across an old video of yours from several years ago, you guys hadn't even started building the house yet....I had no idea that there were houses and other barns and silos on the property. You guys are amazingly hard workers and it shows in the way your property has transformed over the years!!!
Jennifer Hendricksen, thank you for your comment. Usually when I find a channel that I like I binge watch all the stuff that had gone on before I found it. Somehow I didn't on this channel as I also did not know about "the before the house was built". Thanks to your comment I have just binged watched quite a lot of what went on before. I feel that it is well worth it as the "future plans" are discussed in length and I would say that 99% has been completed. So again thank you for posting
It is hard to try and manage a farm and both work full time jobs, but you and Rebecca make it work and that is what counts. The rewards are worth the effort.
Pete (of the 'Few Acres Farm' fame) uses the discarded cardboard box cardboards to cover the soil around the plants to prevent weeds from taking over. Gradually these cardboards decompose to become soil and help the growth of vegetables. Just an idea.
Yes I was aware that Pete was using recycled cardboard boxes for around his garden plants and cover the soil to stop the weeds issues especially when you have dry summers the weeds seem to want to take everything over; that is Something I did not learn from Pete (using the cardboard boxes). My parents did not do that either except they use newspapers around zucchini plants and watermelon plants to give protection to the plant and to keep the vines above the ground more and to combat bugs as well as keep moisture in the ground when there’s throughout summers….. so, I took it a step further at some point in my life may be living in Kansas because it definitely it was different weather there then it was in Iowa. Regarding the garden paper you put down. You never can leave it in the same place from year to year. In fact I’m not even a fan of reusing it for the reason you just stated. It seems to be more issues than it’s worth to me anyway so I would pull it up and let it dry for a year….Hang it on the fence to dry and make sure you take it down because if you don’t it’ll blow to some other state in the southern wind gusts which seem to come up from who knows where at any given time… Then, I reused it in other projects besides my garden. I might use it in flower beds where The plants are going to be quite a ways apart or are used it where there was mulch or gravel in between shrubs and for children’s play areas and sandboxes and so forth. I didn’t find good luck in reusing it in my seed gardens because the amount of weeds far outweighed the strong produce plants!! For me, I don’t want to have to weed anymore than I have to in the garden where my produce is or my flowers are because I just don’t have that kind of time and even if I did I don’t want to spend my time pulling weeds when there is effective ways to avoid it!!!!! I really hate to dine with friends or family and they have half a dozen dogs at the Table begging for food or sitting on your feet because they’re waiting for someone to drop food and you can’t have an adult conversation because it’s all about the dogs. I loved😊♥️ everyone of my dogs and they were very smart and well trained well I love dogs but I enjoyed them and they gave me enjoyment and that meant that I did not have a bunch of untrained animals jumping up and begging and barking and being unruly in my home. I just don’t get why people are going to have dogs if they’re not gonna bother to train them. Enough said. I really liked your homemade drying racks for the onions. I imagine your wife will end up Making a rope of onions by braiding the grade in together… it’s a very beautiful look and it’s a space saver for sure. I’ll be interested to see what it is she decides to do❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ I hope by now you’ve contacted the Ohio chicken location to replace your six baby chickens you did not receive. That doesn’t speak very highly of them although I realize mistakes can happen. It is always nice to look at a garden and see what you have planted. Weeds can grow fast and that is just part of gardening. Your onions and potatoes look amazing.
Evan, @ 8:25 you are talking about pulling all the fabric in your quest to stop the weeds. I was thinking you can 1.leave it in place 2.pull the weeds 3.cover the area with a silage tarp until next season. Just a thought? Those onions look good! I like that rack you put together to hang and dry the onions! I like the effort you guys put into making everything work.
Just an idea for you . After you pull up the cloth and work the soil , before you lay the cloth back down , put cardboard down 1st to keep the weeds from coming up through the cloth . Eventually the cardboard will break down so it won't hurt the soil. You have the green thumb. I really love watching your garden growing.

Good video Evan. When I was growing up weeding the garden was the boy's job, that would be me. Mom and Dad would plant the garden and I would help and then it was my job to keep it weeded. They never asked me if I wanted too either. Haha. Then it was easy the first month or so, but if I didn't keep up it was the worst drudgery you can imagine. We enjoyed the things from the garden because back in the 60's and 70's most of our vegetables and fruits were canned or frozen in the winter, imported produce was too expensive. the bananas and oranges and other citrus fruit was all that was fresh that we could buy. We stored apples and tree nuts we picked in the end of summer and fall. Everything else was preserved, to this day I would rather have fresh fruit and veggies because of the low cost now compared to then. The other thing that I remember was sneaking extra stuff from the garden on to the neighbors back steps so they would have to preserve it instead of Mom. They did the same to us, so everybody had lots to choose from the pantry in the winter.

You are so right Evan we all learn those lessons the hard way sometimes. And letting that garden go too long makes it 10 times as hard to reclaim - plus the weeds are even worse the next go around. I loved the way you used weed mat, burning the holes in it to plant through and decided that's the way I will go when I finish our vegi' garden build so it was really interesting to learn from your mistakes with the weeds as well. I grew up using a potato pitchfork. They loosen the soil and raise taters upward. It's then fun to complete the harvest by feeling around in the dirt for them. My aunt Ellie Sandra said potatoes harvested by hand taste better. She was probably right. You could still attack some with your shovel.
Been so dry here in NH the last few years. What rain we have got recently has been too much too quickly and just runs off. Haven't had a nice soaking rain in a while
Hi guys. Have you thought to put some paving slabs, or logs along the outside of your garden plots up to the wire to keep some of the weeds from climbing the wire.

I agree with some of the comments about your onions, you and your wife did good and that blooming onion looked delicious too. We live southwest of St. Louis and we were in a moderate drought. We just started getting rain in the last week or so and before that, was feeding hay to the cows. Now that the pastures have greened up, we moved them to fresh pasture today. Your garden did really good, thanks for sharing, have a great evening and remainder of the week.
Had no idea it was that easy to grow onions. I love seeing you build the rack and the detail you took. I could see the pond in the background does it have a algae bloom or is it my tv color? Would love to see a fishing video if y’all ever get out there although I’m sure you would rather fish and relax and not film which I totally understand. Thanks for sharing, susan

Got a idea for your duck weed make wood float 10 or 15 feet wide with screen basket behind it and pull it with your boat, do have a small motor, just pile it up, till it into your soil, kind like mowing your grass
Thus starts the canning season and the hunt for glass jars. Glass jars seem to be in short supply this year, maybe due to high food prices and availability of good food with the alternative grow and can your own. Farming has taken on a new and must have life style or just plain survival.
Most of my gardens over the years have been prosperous with weeds none of my gardens have came close to the amount of produce that yours does but I've never had much of a green thumb. I have several potato forks that I've collected over the years scrapping but I keep stuff like that any kind of garden or yard work tools I would give you a potato fork or two out of my collection but I would have to look and see what shed or garage I have them in all they need is a wire wheel to shine them up. I like the blooming onion from Roadhouse or the seasoning or batter they use on it
My first order from Meyer’s all the chicks were DOA. The customer service was really good, they shipped out replacements, but I did have to wait another couple of weeks. There are some RU-vid videos of there facility.
Maine hasn't gotten the rain we'd like this season. I'm in central Maine and have done a bit better than southern part of the state. Lawn is not as green as could be. There were periods in July where I had to spot water certain things in the garden every other day.
Every time you till or dig, you are pulling weed seeds to the surface and inviting them to germinate. If you would pull out mature weeds, then pull the cloth, add compost and recover, you should have considerably fewer weeds.
JudithB Looks like it will be a good harvest for this year up there. My onions got about silver dollar size and quit. Toms plants did good considering the heat, but the weather here in Ark is always irratic at best, so now its cooling into low 90s and mid 80s. I am replanting beans, and squash, and also cool to cold weather stuff. Hope it does well!!!
I sure wish you would consider sharing some of that rain with those of us in the western part of the state. We have been watching it all go south of us near St. Louis and over your way. Just kidding of course. We are glad you are fortunate in getting the needed rainfall....... just hope you have been left out of the severe storms.
Hello Evan very nice. I'm not a fan of raised garden beds I think they dry out to fast. I grew about 3 4 bushel potatoes white flesh not sure name but that will last till march april onions I still have to dig up end of month have purple and yellow I'll probably have 2 3 bushel. My yellow and green beans peppers will be ready end of month. A little different growing season here than your place. My cousin live your area he about a month ahead. Have a great day both of you.
