I used high gloss varnish on mine and achieved a similar effect. I took the face plate off first so it stayed on the eyes.

Do it! Seriously. Incredible model. I strategically glued mine (avoiding points of articulation) and it’s by far my favorite Star Wars figure now. It’s also to scale with 6inch figures such as Hasbro The Black Series line.

Hey Forrest, I'm about to start my Grievous build, I know this is a lot to ask for you to do from memory, but any tips? I generally do the same thing (strategic gluing) with Bandai kits, but this one is a bit more complex than the norm so just thought I'd ask if you might recall anything worth mentioning. Thanks.

Jim Rogers the three most important things I can say is to be patient, take your time and read the next steps repeatedly to make sure you don’t accidentally glue a point of articulation. I just podcasts on and took the whole day but I could see it easily taking a few days to a week. Make sure glue dries and stuff. Watch reviews of the figure such as FWOOSH to get a sense of articulation. Everything attaches to the torso piece via ball joint but the arms and legs are another beast entirely. You can glue most of the leg and arm pieces but you have to be careful and know which parts need to be free to move. The hardest part is attaching the neck to the torso. Also be careful cutting parts out of the tray things. I severed the eye piece and was lucky I could glue it back together. The only non joint part I didn’t glue was the face mask and it stays on. The model is substantially better with glue I think. You still have to be far more careful with it then a Hasbro fig but with the glue it’s pretty darn durable.

@@forrestpenrod2294 Thanks for all the info. I've had this kit a while and have watched vids extensively. I will definitely be careful with glue and, as you stated, the neck. I've seen beautiful results with tamiya brown wash, which I have, but that really worries me as far as making the plastic really brittle (his "ears" for example) so I may try a brown acrylic wash. Anyway, thanks so much. Really appreciated.

How did you manage to get a Hot Toys Grievous😮

Thanks! No these Bandai kits are pretty straight forward.

For this particular kit, the limbs were a good colour, and really too thin to bother painting, so I left them as is. I usually paint my Clone Troopers, and excessive posing can scratch the paint, but I usually treat these as models and not action figures.

What other model kits do you think are worth ?

That's a tricky question. In the 1/12 scale range the biker scout with speeder bike is a must. I loved the stormtroopers so much i've bought 16 to date and painted multiples of shock/shadow troopers etc The clonetroopers are also a great buy for piant customizations although a tad pricey. I think you cant go wrong with any of the 1/12 stuff although here and there you might have to substitute plastic for soft goods on the likes of Vader and Phasma for instance. The 1/6 stormtroopers are also great if you can get blank Hot Toy heads or use character head sculpts like Han Solo & Luke. The 1/72 range is also great especially the Episode IV spacecraft. All in all there's been no disapointments todate. Bandai Kits are fantastic.

@@garysharkie thanks a lot! But man 16 stormtroopers that's a lot. May I ask you how you've learned how to paint and all of that juicy stuff ? I want to get into this hobby too and I'm not really talented or have any drawing/artistic skills at all. Tho painting model kits and stuff like this seams really fun and not so hard. Also, do the model kits seem like fragile and worse than action figures ? Would you rather have an action figure than a model kit ? Are they fun to pose ? Thanks again!

I learnt trial and error using this channel and IC Model kiT & sculpts youtube channel. I bought a a Vallejo Model Air paint kit and use a paintbrush or coctail stick to apply the finer details. The coctail stick is also great for scraping away any mistakes without damaging the model surface. I use HOt Toys / Sideeshow videos or pictures as a reference point. The Bandai Model Kit figures are quite robust and are super posable. I prefer the model kits but for human characters i go SH Figuarts. I do keep up with the Black Seies figures also. The painting and customisation of your own figures is most gratifying.

I always apply a gloss coat first, as it makes applying a wash and decals much easier. I then apply less glossy coats over the top to seal them in.

The Black Series version would be more sturdy, and make for easier posing, but the Bandai one is more accurate and has sharper detail I think. It is designed to be made without glue, but some arms and bits might pop off if you need to change the pose a lot.

I use the Tamiya spray cans for clear coats. I just sprayed the whole thing in light coats, moving the limbs each time to make sure I got a good coverage.
