🐴 In this raw and unedited video, join me for the first arena ride with Bonnie, the black mare I'm starting under saddle. As she's still VERY green, I focus on helping her understand some basic foundations that will support her journey as a riding horse.
🌟 Horses often labeled as "problem" horses typically lack essential foundation training. By emphasizing patience and consistency, we can transform these misunderstandings into successful partnerships.
👀 Watch as I guide Bonnie through her initial steps in the arena, highlighting the importance of building a strong relationship and solid groundwork. This video offers valuable insights into the early stages of training, demonstrating how a solid foundation paves the way for a successful and harmonious riding experience. Its great that you didn't push her to trot this time , people are often in too much of a hurry to move the horse on to the next stage. I'm a huge believer in building a really good foundation and knowing the right time to stop a session it's key in their education and development. Nice video.

Absolutely. It did take me a little while to learn where to stop as i always wanted to go that little bit further. Now I know the less i do the further I get 🙂

Great lesson! Patience and timing so well executed on a very green, potentially twitchy, sideways runner on her first ride in the arena...on a windy day! 😬 And, the draw of three equine spectators at the fence to boot. Your timing with quick but soft correction and diversion before she gets to think about it too much while translating what you're observing and feeling, and more often than not intuiting, into our language, simultaneously, well, what can I say besides...exemplary! Good finish, too, for all the excellent reasons you cited. I am always impressed at your ability to talk about what you're doing while doing it without it being distracting to the horse because, I think, they think you're talking to them. 🤔 But, when it requires your full concentration the horse gets all your attention - not your audience! Some trainers are too busy talking to the camera and you can tell the horse knows the focus is not on them. As usual, your lessons are a joy to watch. Thank you for all you do for the horses and being so generous with your expertise.

My mare doesn't like standing still at all. If I drop the reins, she will automatically speed up and rush. Luckily she's not spooky but she really doesn't like other horses; she will kick at or try to bite if she even walks past the fenceline next to one. She is worse if she's in season (a lot worse!). Any advice?

Thank you so much for your video's they've helped me out a lot with my young horse. There is still something i'm struggling with, and it's a balanced canter. Even on the lunge and while riding she loses her balance as soon as she starts cantering. After a few months of training ,she's able to canter for longer period of time but balance is still almost no where to be found. I can see she get's frustrated very easily , also on the lunge. And of course, once she's frustrated she loses her balance even more. Do you have any tips by chance ?

thanks for another great video! I look forward to every new video you post. I feel the energy and sensitivity it takes to work with a horse who may be easily excited. You handle it all with calm and wisdom and you know when to stop at a good place. It would be so easy to try the trot and have it not go well. So much better to repeat what has gone well and soon the trot will come just as smoothly. thanks so much for all your videos.:)

Hi Josie, I notice you ride with a safety vest. What type of vest is it? I'm 61yr starting a young horse (he is currently with a trainer) and I was thinking of getting a safety vest.
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 месяца назад
Hi Mary - yes I do ride in a vest. I feel that if I was working for anyone else it would be an occupational safety issue to ride a young horse without one. Once upon a time I would have been a little embarrassed to be seen in one but that was when I was young and silly 🤪. The chances of coming off a young/green horse are greater. than an older more experienced one and if i do come off I really don't want broken ribs, ruptured spleen etc. I am very happy to wear my vest and would encourage anyone riding young and green horses to wear one. Better to have it on and not need it than to need it and not be wearing it. This is the one I purchased www.vipasafety.com.au/vipa-equestrian-riding-body-protectors.htm

Josie, it was hard to see but I think you used both reins for the 2nd stop at 5:23 in addition to seat and voice? I taught my mare that, and now when I'm trying to get her on the bit she takes two rein contact as a sign to stop. Can you advise? Plus, someone told me on the snaffle we're not supposed to use both reins at the same time because it can fold up and pinch. Now I'm confused.
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 месяца назад
I did use two reins there. In the beginning I usually start a 2 rein stop using the fence to help to stop her and to link the 2 rein aid to a stop. When it comes to getting a horse on the bit I send then forward and only have the lighted touch on the rein, like I have cotton threads connected to the bit. I follow the horse everywhere they move their head and keep the same light contact as they need to accept me touching the bit before I can put them "on the bit". It is quite hard to explain in one small paragraph but I do have a video of the early days with Rebel and I tried to show it there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-owjMrlGl6dE.html There are also a few in my young horse play list that show me working on it with green horses. Yes snaffles can come thgether in the horses mouth - it's called the "nutcracker" effect and yes if you pull hard they can hit the horse in the roof of the mouth. I use french link snaffles for my horses.

I have been watching your videos for years, and they still teach me something brand new every moment!! They've been so helpful in my riding journey, especially recently when it comes to retraining my first OTT. I was just wondering if you could do a video of how to teach a horse to pick up the correct canter lead? My boy raced in NT and just cannot pick up a left canter lead to save his life, and when he does he's entirely unbalanced as he has no strength on that side. He doesn't typically even pick it up in the paddock. I've tried pushing him into it by giving some inside rein to try and force it, nope! Even asking over a pole is about 1/10 chance for a transition. He'd score a 10/10 for a counter canter in the dressage ring 😂I'm just at a loss because I don't want to be spending 30 minutes of our ride trying to pick up the left lead just to get no progress and a sweaty horse. This is his only vice, and its been stopping me from progressing him to cavalettis and teaching him to jump as I don't want to build bad habits (always landing on the right lead). Your help would be much appreciated!!! ❤
@joannam9232
@joannam9232 3 месяца назад
Teach him on the lunge. He probably lacks the bend. You need the correct bend without resistance to get the correct lead
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 месяца назад
There are quite a few reasons that a horse might not pick up the correct lead. Far too many to put here. If you would like to take a small bit of video (no more than 5 minutes) of him cantering and also just trotting on both reins and upload it to RU-vid - keep it unlisted and no-one else can see it. Then send me the link (josie@basichorsetraining.com) and I will have a look and see if I can give you some advice 😊

@@BasicHorseTraining I'd like to thank you for the offer but I think we've cracked the code 🥳 In the past few weeks I've had his saddle fitted, he has started ulcer medication and gone thru full body work (the ulcers I suspected, however for all purposes his saddle was a 10/10 fit. I suppose just putting on so much muscle in a short time meant it wasn't suitable anymore or he just didn't like it? Regardless he's booked in for another fit in 3mth time bc of how much topline he's putting on.) He is much more receptive under saddle now and just the other day picked up the left canter leg first try in our lesson, after being spelled for two weeks!! No nagging or hassling, just a simple ask and he picked it up right away, and was able to do so for the correct lead for the rest of the lesson- no matter the direction! We have plenty to go still as he's still unbalanced on the left and gets quite strong, but with some half-halt work and transitions we can build that strength up and get him equal on both sides! 💪 It's amazing what just listening to what they're telling you can change things. He told me he was uncomfortable so I tried the best to fix that, and now hes giving me 110% because he's comfortable and happy. Amazing!!!
