It's not a bad way to go assuming that the standard sizes don't leave you with big ugly gaps. IKEA makes more profit from wardrobes and closets than any other department but most of the expense is in the doors and accessories they sell for them.

I was quite surprised, as I started watching, to see that you had made a video about being in the closet, but I was glad when you came out of the closet… also, it’s nice that the room ‘where the magic happens’ is so well organised with all your squares and clamps in their rightful places and plenty of space to stack and restack your pre finished ply. Already looking forward to the next instalment of your closet diary. 😉

I've seen a bunch of cabinet makers use Lamellos for attaching a floating face frame. That way you can disassemble the cabinets then affix and snap the frames piece by piece. this adds the extra benefit of allowing you to scribe each individual edge that comes in contact with the wall to get a true custom edge that fits right to the walls contour.

That gray mallet is really nice for getting things to go together, it also makes a great micro adjustment tool for the table saw fence. Just leave the fence not quite fully locked down and move the fence with minor taps with mallet.

I’m in the middle of building out his and hers closets. It’s my first project and mistakes have been made, but it’s reassuring to know that my overall approach is the same as yours. I used your three part series on building drawers as my model. I was too nervous to make the face frame all one piece though. My cuts for the boxes weren’t all perfectly accurate, so I’m making small pieces and assembling the face frame on the boxes in the closet. Fingers crossed.

This was great for me. My wife has been asking me to do this sort of thing for out walk-in closet and, having recently finished another project, I was thinking I might try to tackle the closet next. But, it's a bit intimidating. This helped me to visualize it a little better and remove some of the fear factor. I am looking forward to Part 2 so I can see how it looks when complete, and hopefully loaded up with clothes and stuff.

I'm making new kitchen cabinets for my house using basically this method. One thing I have learned is if you are not using $150 sheets of plywood wood you may want to leave your dados a little loose as the thickness of the cheaper plywood can vary. I had to recut almost all of my dados even tho the test piece fit perfectly.

Just a thought: I've done a lot of build-in shelving, and using the wall for the back plate, and the wall studs for the structural support, is a lot easier than building free standing cabinets, with backs. If you think on it, what you built in the video could stand by itself in the middle of a room, literally "self supporting". If it's then installed up against a wall, a lot of the construction details are superfluous. 12" wide x 8' tall plywood panels, pocket screwed into the studs (through the drywall) are amazingly stable, and once you set them on a base, and include a top panel frame, the shelves will be standing AFTER the tornado leaves town.

The only thing my shop appears to have that this shop doesn't have is a mobile infeed table. Of course, mine serves multiple purposes and had to exist one way or another (featuring drawers for holding consumables and as a tool crib, for example). But I use the infeed table for ripping down super long stock or something wide like sheets of plywood. When working alone, eliminating one of the "axis" (X-Y-Z or right/left, up/down, forwards/backwards)(in this case up/down) makes cutting plywood so much easier. I can also add a fence to it to make guiding the plywood WAY less sketchy as it enters the cutting area.

Insane because of the cost of the pre-finished plywood. I see that the drill came out when you were doing some of the face frame holes. Happens to me all of the time. I'm glad that you are using glue with the screws because I see so many builders that rely on 2 or 3 face frame screws to hole the complete piece together. As the Kreg company said in a video I saw many years ago, the screws are mainly to hold the piece together until the glue dries. They also will be some added strength. Worked for a company that put together closet shelving many years ago. Worked in some homes that were very strange. One closet was a remodel. It had a keyhole effect from top to bottom and from side to side. Strange!!!!!!!! I remember the secret candy storage...

My wife didn't want to spend all sorts of money on a wedding dress to only wear once. So every year on our anniversary, she puts on her dress, I put on my suit and we go out for a date night. We find a fun activity to do in our wedding day attire, then go out for a fancy meal. Year 5 was a skydiving adventure. She jumped out at 17,000 feet in her dress.

Random thing I do that I thought might be entertaining for your next tips and trips video. I have my pinky fingerprint as a backup on any electronics that have fingerprint ID technology. during several sanding and gardening projects I've either worn down or cut up my hands and made the standard pointer finger and thumb prints unrecognizable. Ever since adding my pinky I never have an issue as they typically stay unharmed.
@dennodinero
@dennodinero 5 месяцев назад
Jason, I've been watching for 2 years now and you have inspired me to register on RU-vid and make you my very first subscription and very first comment. The reason being that I have an easier way to equally divide spacing between cabinet stiles. It's called the DENNO method. Simply measure the distance BETWEEN your outermost stiles. Add to that, the width of one stile ( 2 1/4"). Divide that total by how many openings you want. Now, subtract the width of one stile (2 1/4") from that answer. There's your spacer.

As a former cabinet shop manager/designer/drafter, I designed a full height cabinet floor to ceiling exactly once. When the installers called and said they couldn't stand it up I felt like a massive idiot, but it was a learning experience I feel like every designer goes through. We ended up just building the toe kick separate from every full height cabinet after that... Face frames can fix a lot of things.
