Building Log Cabin Roof Alone in Forest of Sweden

My Story:
When I graduated high school I sought a big challenge in life. To alone, with only simple hand tools and raw power, build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish forest. I film everything myself and edit these videos so you can follow my journey and hopefully learn as I do. I have no earlier experience in any of this, just a visualization of what I want to achieve and willpower to learn and improve everything necessary. So I enjoy reading good advice in the comments. Enjoy!

I admire your work ethic. I built a log cabin a few years back. 16'x20' with an 8' overhanging loft in the front. I used tractors, chainblocks wheelbarrows, chainsaws and battery powered tools. Harvested all the logs of my farm and hand peeled them with a drawknife and ice chipper. Bought all the lumber and used recycled materials for doors and windows. Picked up some nice second hand tin for the roof and used soffit from another project (I built my own house). It might've been due to time restraints and having two very young kids but I couldnt imagine tackling this project with an axe, a hammer and freaking handsaw. Well done man, well done...

Possibly one of the most beautiful documentaries I have seen yet on this planet. Simply building a log cabin by a young man. This would be a dream come true for me if I were young again. It has brought me great peace and I am going to try to do it myself. Thank you Erik. I would like to donate to your cause. This is what young men need to do all over the world to break the insane addiction to all this technology. Being outside in the fresh air in a beautiful forest. Euphoria!

With no previous experience, you sure put a lot of craftsmanship into the cutting and fitting of every piece of wood and log. So you either read how to do that, or you have a talent beyond even your own ideas. One thing for sure, that log cabin will be there for the ages... Solid in design and quality technique. Thumbs Up!

Here's the deal, I'm Canadian, and when it comes to building structures that need insulation, well then .... THAT IS A MAJOR PRIORITY HERE IN CANADA. That said young man, from all the log cabin building videos here on RU-vid, you are the ONLY builder that has done it right when it comes to the roof! It's incredible that others think that 2-inches of roof insulation will be enough in the middle of winter, along with others who are incorrectly insulation their roofs with leaky vapour barriers and insufficient R-Value insulation! It just blows my mind to no end !!! Some of these structure are so well solidly built, but then when it come to insulation the roofs, it's a loss-of-heat and moisture-catastrophe yet to happen! I just do not get it that how can someone put their hearts and souls into proudly building a structure.....AND TOTALLY FAIL IN SUPER CRITICAL FULL-FLOW ROOF VENTING DUCT WORK, ABSOLUTELY SEALED VAPOUR BARRIER PROTECTION AND EXTREME R-VALUE INSULATION GUIDELINES. That said son .... you are truly a MASTER by doing your 'homework' and effectively but most critically CORRECTLY build your roof within properly engineered blueprint guidelines! I personally endorse and confirm that your cabin will outlast and outperform most of the failed builds here on YT. The proof will definitely show the failures once condensation and overly perpetual heat loss factors kick in! Congratulations son .... I would hire you in a heartbeat !!!

I actually loved the longer beams on the roof. Looked badass. Now since you've cut them off, it looks more compact. Still fine.

Yeah I wanted him to keep one. Good for hanging stuff or a pulley point.

I was thinking the same, but am wandering if rain and snow could be the issue. Maybe that is why he shottened them

@@martinlehtonen To avoid fungi attack, in wooden construction, you can use the principles of structual wood protection. This is to prevent water from being trapped in the nooks and crannies and especially at the ends of the wood.

I thought the same. This cabin is perfect when it's not perfect.
