Wave's 1/20 scale Küster (a variant related to the Kröte and Gans vehicles) is one of the coolest looking creations from Kow Yokoyama's Maschinen Krieger world. This video series will look at building, painting, and weathering this recently re-released kit. It's a must have for any Ma. K fan!

Awesome instructional video... I'm hooked while building my first Ma.K, an Ammoknight. After seeing this, I need a Kuster in my life! Greatly inspiring and reassuring during my bench time. I just used the plastic parts for all the bars rather than the brass! Also, I just glued the smoke launchers straight on without any reinforcement! Haha~ putting all my faith in my gentle giant hands!

I was thinking of using the plastic parts, but I'd built a Jerry a few months before - and I broke those continually during the build. SO I went with the brass. It wasn't the pain I thought it would be actually. I'm so ham fisted, I knew those smoke launchers wouldn't survive my hands! LOL As it turned out, I banged into them quite a lot during weathering, so it worked out well. Thanks for watching and commenting Zach - I am grateful!

Great start Jon, I ordered the same kit from usagundam store last night...not sure about the contest yet, at 54 years old I am still just a novice after a 30 break from modeling. I have the products to get a good result, maybe on the skills lol

Apologies if you mentioned it in the video, but what are your thoughts on having a flat top coat vs having a glossy one? Thanks for the video!

Thanks for watching and commenting! It depends on so many factors, it's hard to definitely say one or the other. It all depends on what will go over it. If it's a final top coat, and you want a matt (or glossy) look, then apply what is preferred of course. If it's an intermediate coat - between various stages - then it will depend on what will come after the clear coat. If it's decals, a gloss coat may be called for. Oil or enamels could go over gloss, satin, or matte, depending on what type of effect you want to achieve with those. Take a look at this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dz3GX2QQQdg.html) and see if it helps. It's focused on Gunpla, but the basic principles apply to any genre. If that doesn't answer the question, please let me know! :D

@@JonBius I'm re-reading my original question and I completely omit that I was talking specifically about what type of top coat to use for dot filters! I've finished rewatching the referenced video and that actually answers most of my question; oil dot filters washes will have more grip on a more matte surface than a gloss one. So far I've done all of my dot filters over a gloss coat and I've liked the results, even though I think most of what is left over is more of a staining from the oil rather than a super thin layer of it. I had figured that a matte coat might be much harder to remove the oil paint, but seeing this video it cleans up just fine! I guess my original question was more to figure out if the oils behave differently that make it more ideal for a dot filter. Maybe the streaks are more defined and appear more as bands of color rather than really soft modulated lines? Anyways, thanks for taking the time to respond. I think I'll try a matte coat for my next dot filter and just see what happens!

@@supersoftfloormat Gotcha! Thanks for the clarification! Pinwashes will flow around details that are gloss coated very nicely. Cleanup will be easier, though it can result in some of the wash being removed from areas you don't intend unless you are very careful. A matt coat leaves a bit of texture on the surface (which diffuses light and thus makes it matte!), and oils will "bleed" into that texture. It can vary between matte varnishes, of course, but it leaves a grimier look. The oils can still be cleaned up, but there will be staining. Of course, if you are wanting a dirty look, it works perfectly. (See this part of the Occupier build I did quite a while back. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vdhlSw5ihaY.html ) A satin surface will hit it a bit in the middle - not quite as "flowy" as a gloss surface, but not as "grippy" as matte. Each has advantages and disadvantages. I think for me the key has been experimenting with each until I'm comfortable with what the outcomes will be, and then on each project I can decide what will work best for my goals in that build. "kuester" Round your lips as if to say "u", but say "e" instead. Interestingly, a Küster is a churchman, an assistant to the pastor. "Sacristan" is a synonym. Why Kow chose to name this a "Küster", only he can say. A "Kröte" is a toad, but a "Schildkröte" is a tortoise. Those old Germans... I love your base colors! The US Atlantic ASW 2 scheme. Yes, hot water for Wave's decals, absolutely. I do the same thing. I nuke the water first, in a little bowl, then keep it on a mug warmer while I work. I've had to slice Wave's dekkles sometimes, too, or use a needle to poke holes in it, and then apply the setting solution, to get them to settle down on the compound curves of a suit.
