Good advice, Cyn. I'm 87. Been training most of my life since I was twenty. Of course, I've lost muscle mass, yet I'm still reasonably strong, fit, and supple. Pumping iron, some aerobics, yoga stretches, are keeping me going. Gym twice a week. Yoga Stretches two or three times a week. I'd be lying if I said I only eat really healthy food. I like a beer. Also like my coffee and cake. Still in all, I eat pretty well. My advice to all oldies: keep and fit and well as you can. In that way you can do all of the other things you live for.

It's a mystery to me why people who talk in their You tube Videos play music to compete with what they are saying. Do you want you audience to listen to music or do you want them to pay attention to what you are saying? Make up your mind🙂 Especially important in a YT channel for "people after 60". Many people of 60 and older have difficulties distinguishing background noise from what they actually want to hear. For them, playing music while you are talking is a nuisance, horror.

I’m 66. After waking up, around 6 in the morning, a cup of coffee and a banana I work out for more than an hour. In the late afternoon I do 3 series of correct executed pushups, abs or neck training. I practice I.F. For over 8 years now. I eat healthy and have banned all but natural sugars. I don’t drink alcohol (not a drop) and I don’t smoke. Every day I meditate for about an hour. Once every 3 months, sometimes longer, never shorter, I eat a solution of cannabis prepared in butter. When I go for a walk in the afternoon I still feel like 30. I don’t have any knee, back or other health problems. I don’t take any medication. I don’t give a toss about reaching 70, 80, 150, or 250 years. What I do care about is my well being, physically, mentally and emotionally in the here and now. And I can assure you I feel great from early morning until bedtime.

I recommend Mark Rippetoe's 'Starting Strength' if you're just focused on gaining strength, that's what his program focuses on. If you want flexibility, endurance etc. you'll need to augment it. The one big difference I notice at my age (62) compared to my youth is I need longer recovery time. I can't lift 4 or 5 times a week. Now it's lifting heavy twice a week, some cardio on the days in between. Lifting heavy more than twice a week and I actually lose strength. The thing she doesn't mention in this video is the benefit of using barbell/free weights instead of machines. Barbells/free weights are much better for maintaining and/or improving balance. My mother died from slipping and falling in a parking lot. A lot of older folks with poor balance would benefit from even lifting lighter weights for the balance aspect, even if they're not wanting to gain as much muscle as possible.
@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement
@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement 2 месяца назад
Thanks for sharing! Free weights are better only if you're sure you know what you're doing. Machines are far more effective at keeping you in the right range of motion and preventing injury. Plus, there are a lot of other ways to improve balance. I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I'd advise paying for a couple of sessions with a PT to ensure the movements are done correctly.
@martystrasinger3801
@martystrasinger3801 2 месяца назад
@@CynMeyerSecondWindMovementRespectfully disagree, coming from a 66 yo lifter. While there are literally two exercises that should have some coaching for the novice (squats and deadlifts) curls, pressing movements and rows can be done by anyone with no safety issues. Machines force the exerciser into a range of motion determined by the machine, work only one muscle group at a time, are usually performed sitting so remove any core/abdominal participation and also remove participation from the stabilizing muscles, while barbells can only be moved in a ROM determined by the users anthropometry and (when standing) involve the whole body. Barbells train stability very safely when done on a stable surface, while bosu-ball type exercises are inherently unsafe for anyone who might have osteopenia.

I'm 69, had a heart attack in 2019, struggled with arthritis systems in my knees, hips, elbows, wrists and fingers, a few years later I read about the benefits of keto, fasting, and regular exercise. The benefits are super. Now I'm experimenting with supplements like magnesium, collagen and L-Citrulline (nitricoxide), those I don't believe our bodies produce much of at this age. I'm 5'7" now at 140 lbs and both my cardiologist and primary doctor say I'm doing great.

That's because there really isn't any difference, especially if you've been very consistent in your training. The only thing I've changed up a bit is substituting machines for some free weights, but otherwise I can do everything I was able to do in my twenties, and some things even better.

72, do 100 push-ups a day 250 crunches 1 hr of aerobics and 1 hr of weight training, seeking weights that I experience failure at 60 reps, followed by a 2 mile walk. I do this at least five days a week Not the man I was at 35 but close. You rest, you rust.

I am 62 & have developed a complicated routine through the years. The anchor has been running. I began this daily habit at nineteen. The distance has been far higher in earlier years but remains at a little over six miles daily. My advice is relatively simple: Do something you can do every day, then add things little by little when the routine is in place. For most people, to do almost anything daily is better than doing nothing (with good intentions).

Retired 5 years ago at 64, made exercise and eating healthier a priority. Walk and lift light weights daily. Also, dips, pushups and squats (no weights). I usually swim a lot in the summer and also go back to my home state of Hawaii to hike and swim in the winter. Eat less and better, gave up sugary drinks, but still have a beer or two or three every week! I'm at a healthy weight now and feel so much better and energetic. Enjoy your channel!

Honestly, I am almost 60 and I have no issues putting on muscle, it's almost as easy as in my twenties, if you do the right exercises in good form it seems to go almost as well. The main difference for me is that recovery time is slower, especially when lifting somewhat heavier. I try to do three workouts per week on non-consecutive days so that I get a full day of recovery after each workout. If you don't feel some soreness the day after a workout the workout probably won't help you much, there is some truth to no pain no gain, but it shouldn't be intense pain. Many days the endorphins kicks in the next day, which really helps to lift your spirits even though there is some soreness in the muscles.

I have been looking for content for people over 60 and it is hard through the seach engine. I don't know how your page came up on my feed, but I am so happy that it did. I have been following people over 40, but not being consistent, because my body does not work as well as it use to. I am soon to be 66 and I love to exercise. I had a total reverse shoulder replacement on my left shoulder, so because of the implant that is in my shoulder, I can no longer do shoulder exercises because the doctor does not want the implant to become loose, and I definitely do not wish to have the surgery repeated (long physical therapy session). I also have knee arthritis, and it is very painful to do squats. I love deadlifts. I usually stick with just doing biceps, triceps, chest (on the floor). I will have to eventually start using a heavier weight. Thank you for this channel.

Great vid and very informative! What you say here is absolutely spot on! I’m 63 and I’ve been lifting on and off all my life. Atm I’m in the best shape of my life muscularity wise. I have more muscle mass now and have more of a “bodybuilder look” than what I had @ 30, much to my wife’s liking😬. However … my joints were beginning to cause me some discomfort - elbows, shoulders and knees. I’ve mostly fixed this with the right joint supplements AND A MASSIVE dietary change to aid with inflammation and protein uptake. Thanks for the info.

I’m 53 and I developed an exercise routine of 5 sets of alternating 10 push ups and 50 reps of lying bicycles followed by 4 sets of the same exercises but the 6th & 7th sets are 12 push ups and 60 & 70 bicycles and 8th & 9th sets are 15 push ups and 80 & 90 bicycles. Then the 10th set is the grand finale of doing as much as I can which is average of 65-70 push ups and 300 bicycles. All these within 20 minutes if I don’t get distracted with work. Started doing this workout routine since 2017 about 2x a week…I do other exercises like walking/running on other days and also deadlifts of 45 lbs dumbbells on each hand 10 sets of 10 reps within 20-30 minutes. I love the strength that I gained since 2017 as I lived a very sedentary life since having kids 15 years ago.

Thanks for a positive video with today the way the world is it’s good to have a positive video to watch… I’m 61 now and I used to be a runner but hit by a car and kind of messed up my knee and now a do a lot of walking with weightlifting three times a week And it’s surprisingly I’m actually in better shape now than I was before I got hurt and my body recomposition if I could use it that way I’ve lost fat and gained muscle and so I highly encourage anybody over 60 to hit the weights

Cyn, thanks for this video of the correct information. I'm 71 years old and have been in the gym for years and also run wind sprints. It works. There are numerous videos of body builders making videos without the expertise knowledge. I can assure you your life will improve in most cases if you get in a gym and be consistent.

That's some serious dedication right there! And you're absolutely right-consistency is key. Whether it's in the gym, on the track, or wherever else we choose to exercise, showing up day after day makes all the difference. 🌟

I think longer rest days are very important for over 60 . It takes a lot longer to recuperate when you're older. Less time in the gym and that is the key to build muscle afer 60😊

yes , the path of my life too has led to understanding the rest factor. back in the '50's our father brought home a set of bar-bell , dumb-bell weights. the accompanying pamphlety mentioned how some of those already using these items train on an 'intermittent' schedule. at that time i had no idea of the what or why of this idea. and lots later noticed not only how some who did not even train for them were able to scale 14'rs here in Colorado. and also how my daily routine being interrupted by something like the flu or crummy weather then getting out again days later i had all this energy. that is i didnt need to exercise so much to be fit. 20 years back my life was up-ended by brain surgery to remove a tumor. a big regret post-op was not having any spare energy for exercise. and in a funk about losing the pre-op level of fitness. then , a year an a half later the doc' gave me the green light to resume all my former physical activities. and within 12 mo's i was close enough to my old sense of self to not mind, and what was possible again was plenty enough. by then i was close to 60

Hello Cyn, Happy Holidays and thank you for the video. My wife and I both turned 60 this year, and we have both been fit and athletic most of our lives. I was working out three days a week with kettlebells, dumbbells, resistance bands and bodyweight exercises, and we started regular stair climbing outdoors about a year and a half ago. This was because we were asked to join a climbing team for a 75-floor climb event that happens every September in our area. Unfortunately, back in July of this year, I started having severe low right back pain that I went to the ER for. Kidneys (and all other organs) were cleared after a CT scan. However, they sent me home with the same pain I went in for. Fast forward to now, and it has mainly been my right flank area with pain and pressure every day, all day for almost 6 months now. The other thing that has been going on for the same length of time is my "love handle" area has been numb. It never goes away, and the only thing that relieves the pain / pressure is laying on my back. As soon as I am on my feet, or sitting, the pain and pressure return. I'm talking with an Orthopedic Spine specialist this coming Monday, December 18th. He ordered a CT scan and an MRI of my Thoracic spine, letting me know there is a possibility the muscle and nerves running from my spine, around my side, and over to my naval, could be what is causing my problems. Do you have any suggestions on what types of exercises I should be doing, and which ones I should avoid?
@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement
@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement 5 месяцев назад
Hello there! Happy Holidays to you too! 🎄🎅 I'm really sorry to hear about the pain you've been experiencing. It sounds like you're doing all the right things by getting medical advice and exploring what might be causing the discomfort. Remember, I'm not a doctor, but I can share some general advice. While it's crucial to stay active, it's equally important to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs, especially when you're dealing with pain. Once you've spoken with your Orthopedic Spine specialist and have a better understanding of the issue, they should be able to recommend specific exercises that will help you and those you should avoid. In general, low-impact exercises such as swimming, walking, or gentle yoga can be beneficial for many people experiencing back pain. But again, it's always best to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise regimen. And even though you're going through a tough time, don't lose sight of the incredible progress you've made in your fitness journey. You've got this, and with the right care and treatment, you'll be back on those stairs before you know it! Here's to a healthier, happier 2023! 🎉💪

@@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement Hello Cyn, thank you for replying. I understand you cannot give medical advice, I was mainly asking to find out if there are specific exercises or movements I should be avoiding. That has been something I worry about as I try to keep moving and doing what I can without causing more pain. And I think you meant here's to a healthier and happier 2024 😃

Thanks for the video, very informative. It's funny, I am 60 and returned to do a bit of weight training as a means of getting fitter and to lose a bit of weight, in the first 6 months I lost most of the weight and toned up, the next 6 months I have increased my strength, the intensity of my work out and adopted a more traditional body building routine. I have put on a quite a bit of muscle, so I have been surprised, I didn't start out thinking that I would but now resetting my goals

There’s a popular myth that you will naturally lose muscle as you age whereas I believe that lack of exercise has more to do with it. The aging process brings lifestyle changes not least least activity. I’m 64 and I know that a return to the gym will hurt for a around 3 weeks and then there’s a change where I can life more and whilst not back to my 40s level not far off. And I was never a sportsman of any kind. Use it or lose it is an easy way off giving up whereas lose it and regain it should be the mantra. You’re never too old!

Totally agree, and the is substantial research about to support resistance training for older people. I'm 60 and can't even remember when first started going to the gym. I've run, played hockey and rugby union for a large portion of my life. I'm slowing down now and still manage to get to the gym 2-3 times per week, and do 10,000 steps per day. My sessions are shorter and I'm lifting less, but I now understand how my body responds so that I get maximum benefit.

Kim Christopher - Thank you for the great information! 62 and was always fit till I hit 61 - and things changed with my body! Always workout and strength train, but after seeing your video - I feel my problem may be not enough calories. I drink and eat protein daily, but possibly not enough. T$hank you! Kim
@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement
@CynMeyerSecondWindMovement 6 месяцев назад
Incorporating enough protein in your diet is crucial, especially for maintaining muscle mass as we age. However, it's just as important to ensure you're getting a good balance of nutrients from all food groups, including healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Remember, everyone's body responds differently to dietary changes, so it might take a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you. And always consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian before making significant changes to your diet. Keep up the great work, Kim, and continue listening to your body-it's the best guide you have!
