In this vlog style video I show you how I built my 20 METRE Long SLEEPER RETAINING WALL as a DIY PROJECT for $1500, after completing the excavation for our cabin site in the first episode. I only bought necessary materials and made use of tools I already had laying around (listed below).
PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE to watch the time lapse montage of the Retaining Wall construction, my commentary on the process & how I did it as cheaply as possible! You will also be able to follow our family's journey of farm-life & building our off-grid cabin over the next few months.

Seems like a lot of work for a location you could have just adapted to the lay of the land. Just saying because materials are expensive. How is everything in the police state of Australia?

Retaining wall looks great! I loved the Euki appearances too haha. I was concerned about the lack of PPE though Savong 🤔

Looks NICE...Need this... is that compressed wood? Are you going to stain it with anything to protect it from water or erosion

The wood I used is treated pine wood so it will withstand the weather…not forever, but long enough to serve its purpose. It would probably last even longer if I had remembered to put plastic between the wall and the dirt on the high side.

Sorry, forgot to mention that we won’t stain it at this stage. But will do a video on it if we decide to so you can see how it ends up. 👍

Feel your pain trying to rip a wet H4 sleeper with a hand saw. To extend the life of the timber line the back of the wall with builders plastic or fill the void with gravel all the way to the top.

Thank for that, i will definitely do that. I order extra tonne of gravel to fill the void when I start doing the driveway. I hope you enjoy the video and please enjoy my other videos.

I won’t use a skill skill saw in this manner. At least with a hand saw you may cut yourself but not lose a finger. Buying a plane or belt sander is one hell of a lot cheaper than a serious injury. I know of several tradesmen and DIYers who have lost fingers and it is just not worth taking the risk. Also a couple of splinters from the saw without eye protection can cause serious injury. And I have lost enough hearing despite being careful not to use hearing protection But the fence looks really good and I would stain or paint as we put so much effort into it we want it to last and stay looking good.

Australia, snow???? Must not be a common thing there, or are I wrong? Nice wall though a tight budget.

Oh yeah there's a number of places in New South Wales and Victoria that get snow frequently through winter. But our farm is close to Sydney and gets snow only a few times a year as its 1300m above sea level and in the mountains. Everything I do on the farm is always DIY on a tight budget! lol

Australia has Ski resorts mate...The south of austria is lush, and very diverse from outback, deserts, mountains and coastlines, barrier reefs, to tropical rain forest and snow topped mountains. It is huge - damn near its own continent.
