Interesting what you had to say about learning on a manual transmission. My daughter wanted me to teach her how to drive and I said I would provided it was on a manual gearbox. She wasn't all that enthusiastic about the idea but she did consent. At first we spent a lot of time in empty parking lots learning proper clutch, throttle, and brake control. When we hit the streets she had that essentially under control and seldom stalled starting out. There was one day though that she lost all semblance over control over the clutch and throttle. I could see she was getting frustrated as I was so I told her to pull over onto the shoulder and stop (We were on a secondary highway that day.). I told her to stick it in fourth and start out and she looked at me and said, "I can't do that." I told her she was going to do it. She stalled it a couple of times which I had expected but then she finally managed to get it going. I told her to stop and do it again. Again she did it without any fanfare. I told her again and once again she pulled it off smooth as silk. I told her to stop again and shut the car off. She looked at me looking a little puzzled when I said "So now please explain to me how you start off smooth in fourth and not stall it, yet you are having trouble starting in first." She sat for a moment and then said, "you're right Dad." I'll get it this time and she did. We spent about two months all told and I even got her to the point where she new how to double clutch and down shift smooth as glass. I was proud of and told her so. A couple of days later she came home and told me that she had just broken up with her boyfriend and sad it was all my fault. I asked her, "How do you figure that." She told me she had informed him that he didn't know how to drive stick properly. He had a Volkswagen Jetta and it was his habit to throw it into neutral and coast up to the lights and stop signs and he couldn't start on a hill without using the emergency brake. When she told him he got upset and told her if she was so good, maybe she should drive. She took him up on his offer and he soon regretted making the offer. I guess she upshifted and down shifted like a pro occasionally even throwing in a double clutch or two and seldom used the brakes because she timed the lights so she did not have to stop. Apparently his ego just couldn't take it and when he dropped her off he said he wouldn't be back. I told her I was sorry but she just laughed and said with a big grin on her face, "Dad, it felt so good to jamb him up and show my skills. He had it coming because he was always putting me down because I'm a girl and and according to him girls can't do anything. I had had enough of his garbage so I blew his doors off just because I could. You made that possible Dad." In any event, her first car was a brand new Kia Forte that she paid for. When we went into the showroom the sales guy tried to talk her into an automatic. She wouldn't have it. She told looked at me with a bit of a smirk on her face and then told the salesman, "If I can get it out of the parking lot without stalling it will you stop pushing the automatic." The salesman said, "Yeah okay." They were gone about 45 minutes when they came back. She came in with a big smile on her face so knew she had pulled it off. The salesman walked over to me and said, "I didn't think she could do it but was I ever wrong. The best part was when we had to start while going up a hill. She had the clutch pushed in and her right foot heel and toe on the brake and gas. She let the clutch out until the motor bogged a little and gave it some gas while letting the brake off, and we started off without rolling back an inch. I was impressed. I've seen people who had been driving for years that can't handle a manual like she can." She bought the car and put about 200K on it in three years before she traded up. So that's my kid and I'm damn proud of her. She doesn't put up with crap and any joker who thinks he can buffalo her had better think again. She will smash his ego into little tiny pieces if necessary.

Also 100% agree with Al on learning in a manual. My family didn't have a manual car so I had to learn in an auto, and passed my test in an auto. I then failed my next test in a manual, just before moving to NZ. So in the end I went through the NZ licensing program, and converted it back to an Australian license when I moved back. I learnt a lot about vehicle control and driving awareness and pre-empting changes from driving manual, and there are also jobs that I have worked in heavy industry where you need a manual license. Learn in a manual if you can, because it's a pain in the arse to learn it afterwards!

i was lucky enough to get dad's pride and joy for my 18th. XB Fairmont. 302 2 barrel, 2v, column shift auto. over the next few years he cried as i turned into a very fast car. some of my best memories of dad are under the car, swearing at each other very time we changed a diff. lol. every time we changed a diff again or uni joint again or engine mount again. lol. then seeing his eyes good wide as saucers the first time i took him for a ride in the finished product. i hope you and your son get to enjoy the the time learning, bonding and creating as did i. this is probably not the best idea for the son's car but have u considered putting small roots style blower on top of the crank case? customise serpentine belt path to drive it. no lag, off the shelf exhaust, cooler charge, no lag, less custom tubing, no lag? love the show, keep up the great vids and happy Easter you, your friends and family.

i agree with Al and learning to drive a manual, teaches you way more than putting it into D(umbass) and going. i've also found out recently from getting a bike license & riding on the road in quiet times or even just going around neighborhood, its taught me a tonne about situational awareness and actually being aware of others on the road and i highly recommend doing it even if he never wants to ride a motorbike on the road

Your son is getting what is pretty much my dream daily car xD When he grows up a little he will know what he's having :) I need to snipe one of the EUDM ones for myself eventually, tho i preffer the prefacelift car more because its simplier without gimmicks like SI-Drive, and has very nice looking Momo wheel, tho i kind of like facelifted front end more, and everything else from pre-facelift.

Nice, my first car was an 86 Toyota corona. Bought a top spec auto car with cooked motor, bought a rough basic manual. Dad and I then made two into one. Good times and that really got me hooked on cars
