Building ORCA - Episode 5: Assembling the center-line

This week on ORCA we're assembling our center-line, composed of the keel, forefoot and stem. All this lumber is quarter sawn 6"x6" white oak, so it's incredibly strong and that's what we want for these pieces, especially below the waterline.
Today we need to connect and create the scarf joint between the front of the keel and forefoot. We're going to have to plunge cut with our skill saw which is a very technical cut, so we have to set up a backing block to put the saw against as we plunge, well as a guide to follow the line. We're going to make two deep 3" cuts on each side in order to get all the way through the 6" timbers.

I’m very happy to see Lou starting to lay the keel. I grew up watching my grandfather building lots of inshore Novi’s in Shad Bay, Nova Scotia. He was a self taught wooden boat builder and fisherman. I own the last one he built for himself in 1991. A 24ft x 9ft lobster boat with the keel ending 6 feet short of the stern. It will turn in its own length. It’s a family treasure now that he’s gone and my pride and joy.

I remember as a kid in Summerville, in Bonavista Bay in nfld, we'd see boat's familiar to this type being hauled up on the beach to have work done on them then now and then, or we'd see them freshly built and being launched in the water. Know wonder your excited Lou this boat is going to be incredible little trawler when its finished. Now you'll be able to go out fishing or do a bit of trawling for shrimp who knows? or just simple go for a cruise. lol

Lou, that is looking to be too big for the shop. I'm guessing there is a point, in the plans, at which the build will be moving outside? I mean, once you stand the center-line, it looks to be a tight fit for the doorway already. So, unless you take the end off the building, or the building opens in a way I haven't seen as of yet, Orca might be stuck in there unless the building is dismantled from around it. That seems like an unnecessary cost, to me anyways.

I just stumbled upon a video, it was about 'trail marker trees', many are old, starting to get diseased, or being cleared for road building etc Basically the trees have been bent towards the ground for a bit, then allowed to grow normally, creating a bend. I'm thinking if your timber supplier can get hold of them, they might make great knees

This project is great and it is timed perfectly for the project our small boat shop is currently undertaking...the building of a replica of a 1776 whaleboat used in the Long Island Sound during the Revolutionary War. Our backbone timbers are about 50% smaller than Orca's but the methods and techniques for fabricating will be the same. Thank you Louis for taking on this project. Your insights and videos will be invaluable during this build.
