We are building outside stairs to the second floor of our garage, in this episode of our Couple Builds Dream Home series. We have a garage loft that will be turned into an apartment above the garage so we need stairs on the outside to get up there. The stairs are about 18 feet tall and have a 4x8 landing at the top.

Installing windows is always a big game changer. It changes the looks but also helps get you weathered in. Nice job working together. If you’re not going to use a wood burner then a propane forced air. We have a fireplace in the basement that is propane with a small blower and it actually helps heat the whole house so the furnace doesn’t run nearly as much when it’s on. How is the well doing? Stay safe. 10” of snow here with a couple more on the way. I’m ready for spring 😊. Bruce from Mason Michigan

Snow is a *really* good insulator. When people go winter camping, snow helps them keep from freezing! Also, if you have a battery fire, don't try using snow to put it out, because the snow will contain the heat, and then when the snow eventually melts or slides out of the way, the fire could easily rage even higher.

Suggestion: Cover the head of the screw's with wood tube putty or wood filler..that way ur screws don't get rust on em. Keep on smiling, stay safe n warm, God bless u.

I love your channel. I've been binge-watching your videos most of the day that started back in October of 2020. I just noticed something that you might consider adding to the vertical support posts for the landing at the top of the exterior stairs. If you put some diagonal support braces between the two vertical posts and probably also the posts and the outside of the house there will be less chance of the supports buckling if for some strange reason something like a moose ran into one of the vertical posts...Safety first...lol

You are a brave bunch, it is far beyond what I would ever want to try, but age is no longer on my side. Too much water has flowed under my bridges, too much wear has taken its toll. Still, I admire you and your family, for still thrusting ahead in the weather, well done. I expected to see far more bounce on the staircase, I guess you feel the bounce more when you walk the treads. Though, without a handrail, I would have to sit that one out, a 'me' problem, my legs are not what I would like them to be.

Center stringer is only supported now by the landing upstairs and center support But nothing at the bottom probably need to run a board at the bottom between both cemented posts. I myself would have made a smaller cement wall uniformed to the stringers instead of cement posts that way all stringers are firmly secure at the base adding more stability to them. But, it's looking AWESOME looking forward to see how you will connect the upstairs to your existing home. God Bless Be Safe. Jim

Nice job so far. I do have a suggestion that you might not have thought about. Snow coming off the roof and potential ice dams "will" break you stairs and hand rails of a very short time. I have had this issue in Breckenridge. Totally destroyed the north deck. I would suggest a stair roof extension. The only thing that will eliminate that issue.

If you had notched in a 2x4 at the bottom of the stringers you could have tied all three together. As it is you will want to install a 2x6 at 2 different places along the length of the stringer. It will keep them from spreading as folks walk on it. Imagine several folks walking up the stairs possibly carrying items. It will add a lot of weight. You also really will want to install some X bracing under the main platform between posts. I used that sealing tape on the stringers under each step. This would greatly extend the life of the stringers. Good idea about the sealant. Test it when it dries with water to see if you might have a problem with slipperyness.
