Steve, from the looks of it (each bit of footage you show) you are securing the bolts into the mortar course and not into the bricks... The build is going well and looking good.

Hi Tim, no I actually drilled into the bricks for a stronger anchor point. Mortar would just crumble.

Thanks for the video. I'm planning on doing similar with 25mm plywood onto brick. I wasn't planning on using the studs, just going straight into brick wall. Do you think the studs are necessary?

I needed to run power and data cables behind the wall panels so studs give me the space to do that. It also creates a flat mounting 'facia' so the sheets are nice and straight. But if neither of these are important then going straight onto the brick would probably be ok. We've stuck plaster sheets directly to a brick wall inside our house as part of our reno and it worked ok. I actually ran the data cables along the mortar lines on the wall and siliconed them in place before we stuck the plaster on!

Why not put studs sideways and insulate as well.

I've run the studs vertically because that's the way that houses are generally built and seems to make sense. I can run cables up and down the walls behind the panels easily. No need to insulate as the walls are double brick and we don't get extreme cold or heat in Melbourne like some places. The ceiling is insulated though as there is only roof tiles above the silver foil.

Also why plywood wouldn’t sheet rock be cheaper and functionally same and easier to finish.

Hey Jacob, good question. I went with the plywood mainly for the aesthetic of the wood finish. If I used sheet rock it would just feel like another room in the house.
