Building Shelter Logic Corral for Calves

We built a temporary corral for our calves using the Shelter Logic kit, corral panels and cattle panels. This will be our temporary shelter for the calves for the next year and a half before we get the final barn built. We can then reuse the pieces elsewhere.The structure appears to be very solid and well made. We got feedback from a neighbor who used one this past winter with great success. This all cost us about $500, and we offer our opinions freely without any sponsorship from the company.

This video is invaluable for anyone who has purchased the ShelterLogic Corral Shelter. Thank you so much for showing how to do it.

We hope so! Always good to see something like this put together before buying, especially since it comes in a box! We were lucky to see one put up in the parking lot of our local farm store when we were considering it. We hope it holds up and will post updates.

Ha! That would be something. I added the disclaimer for transparency. I think viewers should know if we got paid or something for free. We'll update how it holds up. Thanks!

Thank you very much for posting this! I am planning to make temporary horse stalls out of the corral panels and the shelterlogic! I didn’t know that they also have an enclosure kit! That will come in handy during winter time! Would love an updated video on how it holds up to winds, and if you get snow as well!? I live in Wisconsin so we get plenty of snow!
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 6 лет назад
We do get snow, but built this shelter closer to spring this year. Only had a few inches since then and it melted quickly. I'll definitely give an update after this next winter. So far, though, we were both really impressed with the durability and stability of the structure. Using hose clamps to firmly connect the corral panel corners made it very stable. Good luck!!!

You’re welcome! Anchor it well! It lasted a long time until it went end-over-end across our field in a windstorm. It was our fault though for not checking the anchors. Thanks for watching!

Awesome! Glad it is info you can use. We hoped it would be helpful for those looking for a pretty sturdy temporary shelter. We thought about building a wood run-in type structure, but didn't like how it would be pretty permanent. This structure can be taken apart and components used elsewhere. Plus, not cost prohibitive (especially if you already have some corral panels) and looks nice. We are still planning the large wood barn in 2019, but feel confident this will get us thru next summer. Will most likely buy another curved end panel to enclose the front top area for winter.

Do you have any photos or plans for your big wood barn you are going to build in 2019? Just curious. Thanks Blue Creek Dairy Farm WA

So far, the fabric is holding up ok. We're in our second winter. I wish we could buy individual panels of the enclosure kit, but was told we can't.

I have one of those shelter logic and it has only lasted 1 year and started ripping across the top.

@vnthomas16 2 года назад
That’s too bad! Ours lasted quite a few years, and even after the structure was destroyed, we continued to use the top as a tarp. Thanks for watching!
@mickeysaathoff938
@mickeysaathoff938 2 года назад
That,total enclosur here would have cost 400 for just the top and enclosure tarps. 3 new panels 100 ea 50 to 100 for the cattle fencing less than 20 for the tposts and anoer 75 to 100 for the gate. Aaahhh things have jacked up in since this video. Well done you two

Great minds must think alike, lol Ive been saying, "The only constant is change" for yrs now, lol. To funny. And we just put one up here at the sanctuary for two horses here for only a couple of months. Excellent portable shelter.

I noticed the brand of Corral Panel Pieces are TARTER. I live near where the main hq of that company is! They come from al small town in Kentucky!
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 4 года назад
Yes, Tarter is a mainstay of our local farm and ranch store. They even held up pretty well getting cartwheeled across the field in a windstorm! Haha! We still use two of the three! Thanks for watching!

Hi there! I'm considering Shelter Logic for my horse's temporary shelter this winter. I'm wondering what anchors did you use for this one?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 года назад
We used the ground anchors that came with the kit. They worked well for a couple years until their was an unfortunate combination of high, gusty winds and saturated soil conditions! As a long term investment, you may want to upgrade your anchoring system. Overall, we were impressed with the Shelterlogic and would recommend it. You might want to check out our other video on it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xbSQ5SWycmA.html

I have never seen this product before, very nice. I’m curious though, for $500, could you have build a more rigid and lasting structure with wood? Thanks again for sharing this, Dave.
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 6 лет назад
Dave Pruitt great question! We were wondering that too, but also needed something temporary because we are building our big wood barn in 2019. Thus, we didn’t want a wood structure that we’d have to take apart. Plus we can reuse all components of this corral elsewhere. The Shelter kit & enclosure kit together were $300, the three corral panels were about $200. Thanks

I can certainly build something more durable for $500 but I am afraid it won't be this easy to remove or move around. The roof in this product I believe is easy to move

@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 6 лет назад
Denny's Country Life, so far it’s holding up pretty well. We’ve had a few thunderstorms blow through with no issues. We do have the opening facing away from the prevailing winds. Coincidentally, that also opens it to the morning sun and shades them in the afternoon, which worked out well.

Hello, Just wanted to ask how this help up over the winter? Do you think it will last many winters?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 5 лет назад
The shelter worked great over the winter. No problem with the snow or ice. The top cover looks great. The side enclosure pieces will need to be replaced as some of them tore at the grommets due to wind, and the help of curious cows! The corral panels had no problems. Overall still very impressed with the kit and we will get at least another year out of the top cover, the top frame should last much longer.

@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 4 года назад
So far it has done very well. This is our second winter and we do use the supplied tie downs. The top cover has held up great. The side enclosure kit does have some tears...but I'm sure part of that is help from the cows!

Clover Mountain Dairy do you think if it was anchored deeper with tposts would it of blown away? We get winds here in Oklahoma that can be up to 70 mph+...
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 4 года назад
It came with screw-in anchors, and our soil was super-saturated from recent heavy rains, and I think that contributed. I would look into heavier duty screw anchors. I don’t know what the wind rating of the actual structure is.
