Building the 23' V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 17: Fairing the hull

It’s time to fair the hull of our V-Bottom skiff, but before we can do that we need to sand and prep the surface. We created a new vacuum system for our sander to help with any fiberglass dust. It has two vacuums, one of which is suspended above the boat to allow for easier movement of the sander and hoses. The final step is to mix and apply Totalfair, we’re out to fill all the low spots so when we apply our barrier coat we will have a nice fair surface on the hull and first side plank.

Thanks for the video drop! This glass over wood approach was used by my uncle for deadrise scows as far back as 1960 - at that time with polyester resin, later with epoxy. We used these open bay boats for fishing, hunting, skiing. On and off the beaches, breaking ice in the winter, etc. I have used this technique building a 19' motor boat and strip planked canoe. One suggestion is to try larger spreading tools for the fairing epoxy. Sometimes a 10" sheetrock knife can be used two-handed to get good pressure an ultra smooth surface using very little compound if the glassing is decent.
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 2 года назад
I always loved stepping up in knife sizes when spreading any kind of mud or compound over any surface. Drywall mud, spackle, plaster, bondo, leveling compound, anything to smooth [fair] a surface. The wider a knife/ spreading tool, the less time you end up spending with a long-board; sanding.

Your sander invention is genius. As a person who has fared many hulls and plugs for molds, I wish I had that, then. I have worn all the safety stuff taped up my sleeves neck rag over my head filter mask. Only to blow off a half an inch of dust, off my self at the end of the day. That was a long time ago. There wasn't these air filter breathing masks they have now. People who have never done this don't know how much of this is just the feel of it. Holding the sanding device. feeling the hull with your hand as you show in this video. As you going to leave the stem Square or put a cap on it?

Only Lou would think to turn a gas can into a dust collector! I need to make one for myself. I didn't see a speck of dust come out from that rig! That boat is going to be beautiful! The lines of it are great and It looks better every time you do something to it. Keep those vids coming!

Nice job on finding a solution to your dust problem. Sometimes there is nothing available and you have to come up with your own solutions as you did. Eliminating the hazard at the source is always better. PPE is your last line of defense, because once the hazard whatever it might be gets past your PPE, nothing stand in its way of doing you harm. Time, distance, and shielding. Those are the three words you need to keep in your mind when you want to mitigate a hazard. So keep your exposure down(time), stay away from the hazard as much as possible(distance), and use engineering controls and/or PPE as required (shielding).

Love it, Lou! I’m getting ready to do the same thing to my little 12’ S&G. Will definitely treat the bottom that way. I also put a layer of glass on the inside as a crust. Love that term!
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 2 года назад
For pizza, I don't really care for a thin crust, if I wanted toppings on a cracker, I'd get crackers and put toppings on them. But for a boat? Hell yeah, keep her light. If someone ends up buying her for the purposes of a larger boat tender [pick-up truck/boat for going to shore] light & stable, is always a great idea. Not every 28 footer and up has davits and many have to bring the tender onboard or tow it behind, so light is a major plus.

Here's a couple of tips learned from 45 years in construction that would apply here. 1. Take down every mountain before filling any valleys. The tendency is to quickly get to the filler. It's more fun than scraping and sanding, but you'll just make more work for yourself. 2. Never put on enough. Starting about 6:05 you make this point by laying that fairing compound on thinly. Always figure on another coat coming after the one you're on. That way, when you get there, you'll be glad you got it done in one less coat, because even at the end, you were thinking of one more.

I have to tell you Lou that with a good Vacuum on a good orbital sander works so well that you don’t need an outer chamber, What I do, do is to pipe the outlet air from the vacuum outdoors, if there is not a proper outlet from the machine, put it outside !

Maybe get Clayton as a sponsor. They have really advanced the technology of HEPA sanding and dust collection in aerospace for a couple decades now. Also, I much prefer the 3M PA-1 blue or gold squeegees to the yellow ones for general use. The gold ones are a hair stiffer than the blue.

Very nice dust extraction! I wish there was more info on how to make comfortable PPE yourself for cheap. Like rubberizing some gloves that fit you comfortably and maybe have some kind of pump that pushes air into the glove from your back to keep you from sweating. Or a helmet PAPR that pushes fresh air from outside. And a light gantry system that routes the air hoses around your workshop. Because from what I've read sooner or later you will get sensitized by epoxy hardener and then you can't really work it it anymore except in a proper environment suit. But PPE is so expensive and uncomfortable!

Actually make a drywall sander that uses this principle. 25 foot pool hose let me keep shop vac outside thru windows. Found using vacuum bags in shop bag worked best. They are expensive but just using filter cartridge go clogged to fast and banging dust out of them is just a mess. Another great way to control dust is putting box fans in windows for demo work. Room your in ,you put the exhausting out and in another room you blow air in the house.

I worked around fiberglass for over 45 years. I'm sure totalboat or Jamestown distributor would tell you the same
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 2 года назад
Yeah, if you can afford a festool set up, they are worth it, every penny. But there are a lot of us out here doing woodwork and even working with fiberglass that can not swing that price tag. The cost of the festool ROS and dust collector is several months, or more, worth of supplys for our hobbies. Personally, I haven't spent those price tags on my hobbies in the last few years. I scavenge my woods and only buy sand paper and finishes. I resharpen all my own tools, mostly hand tools. Diamond cards are great for sharpening circular saw blades for the skill saw, table saw, and miter saw as needed, and diamond plates instead of wet stones do wonders for my hand planes and chisels. Triangular files for hand saws, etc. I save up to buy ROS disks in volume, but several thousand dollars for high end tools are way out of my budget. Heck most of my tools are swap meet, yard sale, or flea market finds, the ones not bought at Harbor Freight, that is. For a disabled guy with a fixed income under 10k annually, Festool is out of the question.

the drag coefficient of an object in water is about 1,000 times the same object in air....that is a lot of times. It doesnt mean that windage above water, or the weight of a boat cant be a big factor...but an ultra smooth hull below the water line saves a lot of gas money across the life of the boat.
@paterpeter1985
@paterpeter1985 2 года назад
Sure, but on the other hand a lot of technology uses nature inspired solutions such as imitating rough shark skin that actually has less drag than a smooth surface. You can only be sure by good comparable measurements, but I can see a glass structure possibly doing the same.
@johngoodell2775
@johngoodell2775 2 года назад
@@paterpeter1985 There are specific reasons shark skin denticles reduce drag and actually have propulsion qualities. The shark has a touch skin to protect it in a violent lifestyle made up of layered armor of denticles. The denticles have specific shape like microscopic keel structures on each one and other qualities. It an evolutionary strategy to allow good hydrodynamics within an otherwise rough armor. If the armor wasnt important they would just have super smooth skin like all fast fish. THe law of hydrodynamics are known....there is no truth to the idea that a rougher surface makes things go faster ....its just pure fiction. Fiberglass weave is a perpendicular matrix of fibers...that and any other imperfections creates more drag not less. There is a reason the shipping industry and sailing race industry spends $ on creating the finest surfaces possible

I'm sure there's a better way but I never thought of what you just did. Highly recommend the out tube or even just a sock on the main out, just use the whole sock, don't clog it

Of course another big plus to the thin coat of fairing compound, besides less sanding, is your using less compound, and therefore saving money and your stash of fairing compound goes much further. One set of buckets can do two or three boats instead of just one. (Or four or five instead of just two, depending on the size of the boats your building, of course). Some people freely exchange the words cheap and thrifty, but fruggle or anti-wasteful are never bad things in a world where wastefulness is rampant. She is looking great, Lou. I can hardly wait for the paint or flip, which ever you choose to do next.
