I don't think it's necessary to do a lab check. The yellow residue might be the sulphur or tungsten that broke off the compund. WS2 is a dark colour, so leaving a yellow residue might indicate it broke down into tungsten oxide or sulphur oxides. The oil in that case, in a lab check, would be more acidic than usual. Please correct me, if my thinking is off, or anything.
@crisnmaryfam7344
@crisnmaryfam7344 Год назад
@@sirboiledpotato1314 I dont know about all that, but a lab check can let you, if you know what to look for and the material make up of certain parts, allow you to see if things are breaking in properly, or wearing excessively before catastrophic failures happen. Example, Catch it Before a block decides to shit a piston, or possibly even make a rod knock that is audible to the human ear.

To your discovery on the silicone / RTV. Most people think that RTV is what does the sealing when sealing 2 surfaces, when in fact most of the sealing is done by metal to metal contact. Which is one reason why checking for warpage of housings and irons is so important. A slow drying RTV is more desirable when assembling a complicated engine so that there is time for the sealant to squeeze out as much as possible during assembly. For this reason I actually use the hylomar on the legs of the engine if assembly time will take longer than normal.
@RobDahm
@RobDahm Год назад
That definitely makes sense to me as I learn more. Now that I have more experience with hylomar I can see why you say that. Appreciate the tip!
@bryancohn9406
@bryancohn9406 Год назад
@@RobDahm Hylomar is likely the sealant you’ll also use on the Indy Car gearbox. I’ve been using it for decades on Hewland gearboxes with excellent results. It is oil and gas impervious and never completely dries, always staying tacky. It will actually reseal after a fast gear change when there isn’t time to clean the surfaces. Buy the good stuff, not the off brand.

rob, hope you see this: helicoil taps (and thread gages) are always labeled by the size of the threaded insert they tap for. helicoil taps will usually say “STI” right after the thread dimensions so you can differentiate them from a regular tap of the same labeled size. in your case, the helicoil tap should read “M12x1.25 STI,” meaning it taps for an M12x1.25 insert.

@fjord-fjesta
@fjord-fjesta Год назад
Came here to say this! I’ve hand-written enough Haas programs that I wouldn’t have hesitated to rigid tap with the CNC, but I can’t deny that it’s one of the freakiest operations to run when you’re first learning it. Rob definitely did the right thing using the spindle to line the tap up but a spring loaded tap follower would’ve made it a lot easier.
@bmkyle20121
@bmkyle20121 Год назад
The tap is an STI tap, which keeps the same thread pitch but in a bigger OD for the helicoils to be able to go into, producing the right size thread pitch diameter once the helicoils are actually in place. Also ypu should get a proper tap handle and also a tap guide, which is a spring loaded pointer that keeps tension on the tab as it threaded in to keep it on center

@Rob Dahm You need a tap follower. Same concept you were doing with the drill bit. You have a spring loaded chamfered pin that you load into a chuck then preload the spring over the back of the tap with your mill spindle in the center of your hole and spring pressure follows for a little while (can repeat preloading as you're progressing) and you have a near perfectly straight and perpendicular thread.

Hi Rob. I'm Ray. I'm an engineer. The purpose of the oil groove in the bearing allows the oil to come through the supply hole, flow all the way around the journal and have the same oil pressure all the way around the journal to push from the middle outwards between the bearing and journal. It achieves the most even flow around the bearing as possible. A race motor typically has larger clearance on the bearings. This makes sure that when the crank (or eccentric shaft) flexes and bends more under the high horsepower and rpm, the journal surface doesn't touch the bearing material (as you know there should always be sufficient oil film in between). This larger clearance means that more oil flowrate will pass over the bearing and therefore the groove needs to be deeper to accomodate the extra flowrate and keep the pressure even all the way around the bearing.

Great you're taking shipping into your own hands! I'm still kinda upset that my first order never arrived/shipped nor received updates or support... But glad to see you improving and hopefully even more!

Fella really built a 1700+ hp motor on a wheel box and half of a table. Also has a shop filled with cool tools where they could fab up a custom stand. But I love your content rob keep up the work!

Tradition! Though the true rotary tradition is to assemble the motor with a bucket as the stand

33:43 is the most conclusive evidence that Rob is officially a machinist. To hell with turning out nice work, if you don't curse your machine you haven't used it enough.

Thank you Rob for explaining how twin vs. single 4-rotor manifold completely changes the sound of the motor. Always wondered why these things could sound so different! Once i heard your analogy of the "double 13b" it made complete sense!

Notable example of twin manifold (4-2 or 4-2-1 header) is the IMSA GTO RX-7 and Defined Autoworks RX-7

Adam LZ is struggling to hit 300bhp with his 4 rotor, and here you are putting the engine together yourself and then likely making the power figure you want. 👏👏👏👏👏

I like the new flywheel, the oil pass throughs will help oil the clutch much better!

It would probably be impossible to find but it would be really interesting to see you tear apart one of the GM rotary engines.

Something that works for me sealing bolts and shafts. I rebuild race and truck gearboxs and we simply used red loctite that was to oil or pressure. Any soft setting stuff was no good but loctite, never leak plus the added bonus. Also red loctite 518 for all sealant surfaces, amazing stuff, you will never use grey silicone again. It only sets with no air so heaps of time building is allowed.
