This is Part 45 in the how to build series for constructing the Affordaplane ultralight or experimental aircraft. This is a plans-built Part 103 ultralight aircraft that is easy to build. Our goal is to make experimental aviation affordable and bring more people into flying and building their own aircraft.
In this part, we show how to cover the Vertical Stabilizer with fabric.
The complete video series is available for purchase (on a USB thumb drive) at HomebuiltHELP.

John is an absolute madman. He went to Oshkosh and wrote some articles for Kitplane magazine while running a small business and it didn't even really slow him down with his Affordaplane build.

Just a tip, start attaching and pulling from the center of each side. This allows you to use the bias in the cloth to work in both directions rather than having to deal with everything bunching up when you get to the end. Do the same with your radius, pull perpendicular from the center, then work left and right. It’s a learning curve and you’ll be a pro by the time you’re done! Thanks for the video.

I agree. Starting in the center cuts any potential slack or wrinkles in half as well. Great tip

Jon is the neighbour I would like to have! Great videos, great teacher, I wish he could teach this to my children at school.

Great video. Still have my iron I covered my Sig Kadet years ago with Ultracoat. I remember on curves cutting slits and overlapping the covering to sort of feather it and avoid wrinkles. Guess you don’t do that when covering a real plane! This has been a really fun project to watch. Getting closer to jumping in myself! Great work Jon!!

Hello Jon. Thanks so much for your videos.I've been following you in all the episodes of building the plane. Great insight and step by step guidance. I am here in Uganda, Kampala and I've been so much intrigued how you make it look simple. I am very passionate about building and I am also preparing to start on a building project. Thanks.

I view the covering technique of this ultralight very similar to covering balsa wood RC gliders and fixed wing aircraft in monokote.

Great work Jon, your mastering the art of covering quite nicely. Did they mention using higher heat to basically stretch the fabric and get a smooth edge around the curves?

For some reason, the Stewart Systems YT channel has them also sealing the cloth/EkoBond with an iron _after_ the glue has been wiped (and dried). I can't put a link here, but check out the RU-vid video v=48OeYmvYHDM at about the 6 min. 47 sec. mark.

Yes - after trimming the excess fabric (after gluing) you should press down that newly cut edge back tight to the tube with the iron.

Second question; what grit debarring wheel do you use on aluminum? Going to be working on a Vans build in April.

Whet is the technical name of the rivet tape you used on the Vans vertical stabilizer. You mentioned there was no adhesive in the center.

Why heat gun cannot be used to shrink fabric?

You would have to keep a thermometer at the surface where the heat is being applied to prevent overheating the material, just my thoughts. Too much heat degrades and weakens the material.

You did have the tail tied down, right? I noticed it wasn't chocked.

If you are referring to when John starts the engine at the beginning, pause the video or watch closely, you will see the chain/rope attached to his lawn tractor/mower.
