Yooo Happy 2020 Everyone. In this video ill show you how I built the classiest kitchen island in the world (through my eyes).
Few things I like to add. I purchased the cabinets from a local supplier flat pack along with hardware and drawer fronts.
I had the panel sprayed professionally with the drawer fronts and side panels so they all match. I didn't film the build of the side panels as I forgot and there literally two squares so it wouldn't have been too interesting.
The counter top is solid white oak.
Ill be making a separate video for the hanging light next so stay tuned for that.

All I need is a track saw, plainer, jigsaw, tape measure, sander, couple levels, work bench, drill, nail gun, Brad nailer, and a couple people to help. 1500 before even starting isn't that bad.

I would of liked to see you build the cabinet boxes but still a great build good job! Choosing white oak over red oak was a great choice.

Thanks bud, white oak is my favourite wood to work with for sure. for the cabinets it was a lot more timed cost effective to purchase them from a cabinet shop and assemble myself. That said I feel most people who would like to try create this project are likely to modify existing cabinets or buy cabinets from the likes of Ikea so I thought it was best to skip the cabinet stage in this video.

Hey on the side panels are they 2 sheets of mdf together same as back panel? If so how did you disguise the 2 boards on edges. Definitely looks 👌.

Wow is beautiful. I have a question. I am installing new flooring in my kitchen this week but i would like to fix my countertop later on. Should i wait first to fix the island before flooring or can I do flooring and then fix the island?

Hey Thank you. If you are replacing the panels on the side and back I would wait until the new flooring is in, that way the panels can sit on top of the new floor rather than it being butt up to the island.

Its a tough one to price but for me on Vancouver Island the material cost was around $1200 CAD which includes cabinets and hardware, white oak lumber, 2 sheets of 1/2" mdf and it all sprayed up. It could defiantly be done cheaper if you painted it yourself and purchased the cabinets from a big box store. rather then off a cnc cabinet supplier.

Love this!! Definitely using this as a guide to build mine. I love the back of your island and want to do this but on both sides of mine (it will be a double sided bar in between family room and kitchen). Any recommendations on what kind of cabinetry I should use?

Great build. Should have had the baseboard painted white with the cutouts in black. Would have popped the tesselation pattern better.

Ok. Wondering where you said you left an inch and a half between each cut. I didnt quite see 1.5 inches between cuts so I dont know what you meant by that. How much space roughly was between each irregular piece for the back wall?

If you're referring to the back panel there is a half inch gap between each piece. Not sure why or when I said 1.5 but its half an inch.

How did you make the side panels? They looked thicker on the part facing away from the drawers. Did you just double up the MDF in this area? How did you get the seam to look like one thick piece of wood instead of two? Thanks! Coronavirus lockdown has me doing some home improvement :)

Hi I used mdf doubled up at the back 12 ". The main reason for this was to hide the awkward seam and the steps in the raised back panel. It also gave it a chunkier feel. I used a paintable edge tape but you could just seal the two ends with wood glue, sand back and apply filler to the seam. heavy primer would help too as mdf endgrain is very absorbent. keep sanding back and reapplying until its smooth like the face. Hope this helps and isn't extremely confusing.

Thankyou, Yes electrics and downdraft wirer run under the flooring an brought up into the cabinets. We installed new flooring which made this more easier.
