In our longest video to date, today the Miniaturisation Department here at Badgerworks take on the ICM 1/48 scale "beer delivery" Spitfire.
We've never actually built a Spitfire before, so we're fixing that today. We're also trying our hands at photoetch parts, something else we've never done, so there are a few firsts in this video.
Arm yourselves with a mug of tea and some custard creams and enjoy the show.
Music:
Theme - SteamGeezer Shuffle - Agricultural Light & Magic

You can forget about antenna wires, from now on. Only yhe Mark I had an antenna wire. All versions from Mark II on, used a VHF radio, thus the long wire was no longer needed. The hollow metal rod behind the cockpit remained in use, to protect the antenna, indside. Respect for building this kit. The fit is just horrible. You did well.

I am also glad to see you did not paint the crow bar in the hatch red. Painting emergency equipment red did not become compulsory until late 1949. Thus WW2 airplanes could never have had a red crowbar of fire extinguisher. Crowbars in Spitfires were usually cockpit green, bare metal or sometimes matt black. If you see antenna wires on a Spitfire, it was often two IFF wires, "Identification Friend or Foe", on the side of the fuselage. A separate radio transmitted a special signal that would create a different signal, on the radar screen, identifying it as friendly. Read more here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFF_Mark_II I also like the fact that you did not paint the invasion stripes all the same width. If you ever see close-ups of the paint work, you can see it was a VERY sloppy job. A real rush job. Therefor, painting these lines by hand on a model, despite the way it may look, will actually be an accurate rendering of how they did it, back then. www.reddit.com/r/HistoryPorn/comments/1ccbxs/spitfire_mk_ix_gets_its_invasion_stripes_painted/ Look at this : www.warhistoryonline.com/military-vehicle-news/d-day-invasion-stripes-in-35-images.html And we, modelers, try way too hard to get those perfect invasion stripes....................

Nice one SteamGeezer, as ever, as superb build. It might be worth looking at some pictures of Spitfire exhaust gas patterns, most modellers seem to get these a little high towards the rear: as the exhaust gases move back, as they get around 2' from the front of the canopy they tend to be pulled down towards the wing. Its a very minor detail and doesn't detract from another very well executed build. Thanks for sharing.

The beer delivery was curtailed, however, by some humourless 'Jobsworth' working for H.M. Customs and Excise, who noted these flights, and put in a report that duty was not being paid on beer being 'exported' to France. The bastard. I hope some special corner of hell was set aside for him. I expect, despite his best efforts, the R.A.F. got round it some way. The funniest thing dropped from an aircraft, though, was a complete porcelain toilet, from , I believe, U.S.S. Saratoga, in an unsanctioned operation against North Vietnamese forces, entitled 'Operation Sani-Flush'. The khazi was fitted with a primer nose, although it carried no explosives, and fins, and mounted on a modified pylon on a Douglas Sky Raider ground attack aircraft. Apparently, it whistled all the way down when dropped alongside normal ordnance. A model kit, in 1/48, & 1/72 scales, is available. There are several pictures of this weird bomb on youtube.

I believe it was the RCAF that started this. I built one of these kits, I think in the early 2000's. I remember the box being very small for the amount of plastic in the box. The early ICM kits were not very good, lots of flash and and many loose parts. It turned out very good though.

One thing that springs to mind (because I've been planning to do it myself when I get time) would be to use something like coffee stirring sticks to simulate the wooden deck of an aircraft carrier. Add some oil stains, wheel marks etc, maybe some oil drums and such. There's a video here on how I made a base from an old picture frame - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kc7UTAo2S74.html

The lever is for the landing gear, as the hydraulics were manually pumped, and not electrical. Also, the D-Day stripes can be either uniform (as you did), OR they can be messy and haphazard, since they were also applied in a hurry on some examples. Modeling is open to SO much interpretation,because no two source materials are the same :)
@HotelPapa100

Not on the Mk IX, it wasn't. Even the later Mk. Is were equipped with non-manual hydraulic pumps. Pilots didn't like 'spitfire-knuckle', so the manual pumps were abolished early on.

'Beer delivery' sounds American to me
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 5 лет назад
Apparently, after D Day, when the RAF moved back into the French airfields, they would use specially modified beer kegs to fly beer from England to France. From what I gather, it happened all over - there's a fascinating story about a Spitfire making just such a beer delivery in Australia when the pilot got lost and crash landed in crocodile infested waters. He had to spend four days hiding up a tree before he was rescued... If you google "Crocodile Creek Spitfire" there's a documentary about it, and the efforts to recover the aircraft.

Those are not the throttle levers, that get folded up and fit to the R/H side - its the Undercarriage Lever. The Throttle lever along with the Fuel Mixture Lever, are fitted on the L/H side, just in front of the Access Door... A very nice model though. My only criticism, is that when cannons were fitted, with their large magazines, an access panel with a much larger blister would have been used. Otherwise, well done...

Superb workmanship, I hope you don't mind an old 'erk' giving a bit of advice but the removal of propellers from the hub was a factory job, it would never have been done in the field by mere fitters. We could, however, replace the entire unit of hub and propellers in the field.

Maximus Yates when I served in the Royal Observer Corps, the underground monitoring posts had crowbars issued in case the access hatch jammed. Extraordinary thing is that these were ex-Spitfire items, just as one sees in the door panel. The one on my post was simply bare metal, not primed, painted or stripped. I think the items varied a lot in RAF service, and I’ve seen reference photos and restoration a/c with the crowbars in red, yellow or bare metal, so I guess it is down to the accuracy of your references, or simple choice. Best regards... stay safe!

The ICM Spitfire was there, so I now have a copy... next challenge is settling on a version! I like the clipped wings, but the HF with extended tips is a bit different. By the way, I am very impressed with the mottling effect you use; the results look far more convincing than some of the pre-shading that others advocate.
