Building the Kitchen Cabinet w/ Oven! Ram ProMaster Van Build Conversion - Episode 17 | Jason Klunk

I finally got to the part of the build I was really looking forward to, building out my kitchen cabinet! The dream has always been to have an oven in the van so I can make pizza after some solid surf sessions and we are getting closer to that being real lol. I’m building the cabinet to be about 56” wide. The depth of the cabinet will be about 24” with the face frame and 36” tall with the butcher block counter. I'm using 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood for all of my lower cabinets, as well as poplar 1x2's for the face frames, and poplar 1x3's for stringers.
I have a lot of respect for people who make cabinets, it requires a lot of patience and precision. I’m really stoked with how my cabinet is turning out given the tools I have available and with my limited knowledge.
I feel like I may have solved one of the issues that a lot of people struggle with; how to keep the drawers shut/locked when driving the van. Most people end up using the plastic RV clips or brass latches. With these push to open drawer slides, I think I may be able to get away from using those, at least for my drawers.
Thank you for all the support. Next week I’ll be finishing up the cabinet and getting it installed in the van, so stay tuned. Yewwwwwwwww!

Lovely work, you're very talented. I always wanted push to open drawers, on doing research this is what they're all saying: "Don't do it! I did and regret it. Will be replacing them soon. They open every time I drive 🚗 😒" Soft close is what you want, where they are stiff to pull open, hense they stay closed.

Thanks. I’ve got one problem drawer but it’s because I installed it a little off - I just need to spend a few hours redoing it. Other than that one, I’ve been happy with my drawers.

The van is looking good man! I’m currently building my own ram pro master up here in Alaska (semi-similar build as yours but you’re definitely more skilled with woodworking than I). I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the detail and the step by step process that you show in your videos. I’ve used them to help me with floor, walls and all sorts of odds and ends. In a world filled with before and after shots where everything looks like it took a day and a half after you filter it through Instagram, I really just wanted to let you know that you stand out. Keep it up!

Nice. Nope, it's just dropped into the cabinet. I thought the same thing and did a lot of research before I felt comfortable installing it in my van. The cabinet has to be built around the oven in a certain way for it to be safe, the documentation for the oven includes all the dimensions for what the cutout should be.

You used .5 inch for the draws but 3/4 in for the frame right? Whats the overall weight estimate? I'm looking at doing something simliar but after making my upper cabinets out of 3/4 marine grade and each of those being 30-40 lbs I'm worried this will be like 100 lbs of wood alone..

What depth did you build your cabinets? Both the kitchen cabinet and the sink cabinet. It says in your show notes that they are 24'' deep. Both cabinets? How wide is your aisle between them? Very nice presentation of your build, btw! I think I have seen a couple hundred videos on vans/builds and keep coming back to yours. They are straight forward and to the point. Thanks!

I’ve never done any sort of wood working in my life, but i can’t tell if I’m just dumb for thinking I can do that and it doesn’t look too difficult lol
@JasonKlunk
@JasonKlunk 3 года назад
haha. Woodworking is interesting, it's definitely very approachable for someone without experience. In the end it all depends on how picky and accurate you want to be. The difficulty comes when you start trying to build cabinetry and things like that where everything needs to be completely square, and that is hard to achieve.

Of all the things you’ve done thus far is there anything you would do differently? Like in regards to solar? The max air fan install?

If I were to do another one, the only thing I'd try to do different is the wall paneling so that it went all the way to the ceiling.

Since those drawers have to push in, once you put the drawer faces on, how can you push them in since they'd hit the face frame of the box?
@JasonKlunk
@JasonKlunk 6 месяцев назад
The faces sit off the face frame a few mm so the push system can engage.

Is the dometic Atwood good to go like that? Or did you plan to use hardie boards and/or thermotech? I have the same and debating if I should drop the oven straight on the plywood
