Building the Louvre Abu Dhabi 

This building is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. Thanks for sharing how this is built.

The interior lighting effect caused by the dome is quite simply the most beautiful and spectacular building lighting I've ever seen. Check it out at 4:37 in the video. Simply stunning.

I remember seeing this in a magazine almost a decade ago, then I kind of forgot about it. Never thought it was actually meant to be built.

The museum is kinda like a plate's perspective on spaghetti.

I’m an architect and for me looks like that they put so much time and energy to try to create the doom that the architect team forgot to design the rest of the building because they ran of time and let the construction company put the walls randomly, this building make no sense!!

Looks great imitating the canopy found in nature. But these new Middle East pop up cities should focus more on creating eco systems for human beings instead of just fancy architecture and sky scrapers for rich tourists to gawk at. Cities require modes of transportation, supermarkets, education, cultural venues, and with advances in vertical farming increasingly locally grown produce.

Having been there it is a stunning building and a great start for the museum area.

Museums usually employ lightbulbs to properly illuminate their artifacts in an otherwise dark environment. This sunbeam effect looks like some short of different "artistic" approach. In a way I perceive the exhibition not being about the artifacts themselves but rather about the artifacts in this particular environment.

Just like the newly built parts of the city of Abu Dhabi, it just lacks personality. It almost looks like as if the government is playing a city builder video game like sims city with endless money and therefore places monuments randomly around the city. Everything there just looks so artificial...

The building itself is an art piece, designed to house other pieces of art. Marvelous inception.

It a spectacular building and something that Abu Dhabi should be rightly proud of. These people that say you can’t buy culture, what a load of rubbish, all the museums in the world didn’t magically appear, and half the stuff in the British museum was acquired from the rest of the world. As for style, you don’t think that all architecture does steal the best parts of other cultures. There seems to either be a jealousy or patronising trend to most of the comments. Different cultures have risen and fallen throughout the history of the world, we should calibrate that the UAE is bring culture to the masses and not imposed an imperial view of the world, as the US, English and France have in their time. One final thing, I find it surprising the narrator refers to the Persian Gulf when it should the Arabian Gulf.

I love the buildings. I just hope when they are sunken under the water that, directions on how to do archeological research is written on the walls. A space ship tree top with light and sacred geometry is very impressive !!

To all the hate comments. Sure, culture can't be bought with money, yes these millions of dollars could have been spent on other thing, and yes the money suppliers aren't the best... But I think it's simply preposterous to call this a complete waste of money only befitting the wealthiest of the wealthy. If these oil diggers and investors hadn't spent money on this, a architectural masterpiece, what would they spend it on, more oil? Corporate schemes? Can we appreciate the sheer mastermind that went into such a building? If not for works like these what will future architects have to look at for reference? It it my personal opinion that this money was, while not the best spent, at least spent well.

I don't like the U.A.E. at all, but I can still be appreciate this brilliant architectural art no matter where it's built.

That's different, and looks like it would be an interesting sight to see with all the beams of sunlight filtering through. Some of those architecture designs seem a bit too bizarre to me though, I'm looking at you Guggenheim Outpost building, but I think that national museum of the UAE looks pretty sharp. It kind of reminds me of the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

The local culture will never allow the featuring of most western art which includes a lot of Judeo/Christain themes and plenty of nudes. I expect the art displayed will be 'safe' and as white washed as the rest of the UAE. Such a colossal waste of money.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi looks awesome. I saw it from a distance before it opened. A sad aspect of Saadiyat Island and other areas near Abu Dhabi is the destruction of the mangroves to make way for new construction. Water is the natural element Arabia has the least of, yet they are destroying their share of it.

I think it will be nicknamed "the microphone"

This is beautiful but sandstorms. It would be cool if Abu Dhabi would invest in and allow the locals to have large traditional markets. After all the vast majority of people travel to experience different cultures and not for architecture.

These sorts of developments throighout the middle east makes me feel a bit sad. Super expensive projects designed by Western architects/designers, engineered by Asian engineering companies and built by expat laborers. Middle eastern countries keep dreaming of diversifying their economies away from depending on oil money. Teach your people to work. At the end of the day your people are your future. I grew up in the middle east and have fond memories

Stupid question: how is the inside protected from rain? And how are they going to clean the outside of the dome, or does this type of buildings need no cleaning?

I'm afraid the reality of rising water levels will quickly bring trouble to this buildings and the others built on the sea

i really like the fact that the uae spent so much on culture! they‘re investing huge amounts on artworks from famous painters, it‘s great that you can visit museums while there instead of just lavish activities

Good idea to put art at sea leave with a rising sea

none of the planned building actually respond to the local culture and geography

Here's a huge iconic dome that will be placed on top and then there is no relation to it and the small building units that make up the structure. The dome's function is quite minimal and is such an expensive element that it is essentially useless in the design and is more of an "art piece" of the museum and seems nothing more than the government doing something impressive with money to show off. The dome itself, when you see it taken off, seems randomly placed on top of the buildings below and doesn't even cover all of them with space below this massively expensive feature being under utilized. The buildings below it don't follow any sort of grid or layout that would reflect a city and seem like pieces that were dropped in Revit with a few random ones rotated. The weakest point of this project is that they try to create the "City feel". This might work if it was within the context of a city, but it is placed out into the water with no connection to a city context, in a city with a rigidly defined grid system and organized master plan. This building takes the notion that a cultural center, especially one that will be as prestigious enough to hold some of the world's greatest arts, and destroys it by creating this tacky fake city context that frankly, looks like a Vietnamese fishing village with the way it sits on the water rather than drawing from UAE type layouts. The fact that all the walls are whitewashed as well is a huge opportunity missed to experiment with many great materials, especially with the wealth involved in this project and compared to the plethora of materials exhibited in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Having this building placed even within a 50 mile radius of great works from Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Norman Foster, yet alone a few blocks away, make it look like a mismatch of ideas sloppily thrown into one building on a site where it doesn't follow the context, and makes Abu Dhabi look second rate to Dubai. I will however say there are some really interesting forms within the building, and the light created by this dome is phenomenal; the dome is really well done and does a great job reflecting Islamic patterns and as a call back to the Louvre. This dome and deriving a building based around it following its radial geometry, could have been an extremely impressive building, with an elegant combination of materials and textures that are heightened by the light that permeates this dome and creates a cultural linkage to Paris and Abu Dhabi and symbolize a progression in urban fabric and building technology that Abu Dhabi has adopted and contrast it to the old city of Paris and how art has shifted along with architecture. But instead it looks like a poor riverside village lacking color, signs of human life, and ALL character with a dome randomly thrown over just because, you know, they could.
