I have been watching your videos for a while and you are my favorite scale modeler. I am eleven years old and my dad let me subscribe and I have learned a lot from you. So thanks.
Hello,I am 59 and have been modelling most of my life, what a great time I have had doing it,well done to you and your dad and I hope that you have a great future doing it
I've just bought this kit - yesterday - after working on the Bronco Bishop SPG which appears to have a massive parts count compared to the Tamiya Valentines plus individual track links, always a hoot. I'm grinding through the Bronco kit this weekend to allow myself a little light relief with the Tamiya kit. Great figures
I would love to work in a hobby store like Andy's, (as I am not a RC person) he could literally grab something off the shelf (probably more complicated) and build it all week, amazing build Andy, please keep doing amazing work!
Well, it ain't no Hellcat...............but gotta love Brit ingenuity!!! Looks like another great kit from Tamiya - nicely detailed and well engineered. I guess the stash is going to get bigger!
The Hellcat may have technically been a better TD given its speed and fully rotatable power turret, but it was let down somewhat by its underpowered 76.2 mm gun which, unlike the 17 pounder, was unreliable at defeating heavily armored German vehicles. The Archer was apparently a pretty good design for a jury-rigged affair. At least you could displace in a hurry (the gun was directed toward the rear of the vehicle) to avoid return fire and perhaps even fire at enemy units while on the run.
Love the M18 Hellcat but this is pure genius, by accident because the gun was so large. Shoot & fly away, if followed.. slow down and start firing again. No pesky turret to deal with ! Plus that 17 pounder was a force to be reckoned with. These tank destoyers were mostly requested on different grids on a battalion / divisional level. They usually didn't go into a town or front like the other other tanks. Really love this backward hull concept
@@mushmorant9253 The gun couldn't be used on the run, the recoil would've taken the driver's head off. not really an ideal situation when you've got a German Tank Platoon/Company/Regiment/Brigade chasing you.
@@bossogg6915 I was about to mention this. Worst part of this vehicle was the inability to shoot and scoot. You had to abandon the driver's location in order to fire. By the time the driver got back into position, the tank's position was compromised.
Watching you assemble these kits is strangely soothing, kind of therapeutic. The designers of the actual vehicle must have felt that it and the crew were expendable- they designed it with the rear, the most vulnerable face, to be presented toward the enemy.
The British military were discontinuing the use of the Valentine infantry tank. Meanwhile, they were trying to find an appropriate platform to house their highly effective 17pdr. It was decided that this AT gun was to be mounted on the Valentine hull in some way. The problem with the gun facing forwards was that it would actually overbalance the vehicle so they had to have the gun rear facing. This is more likely a reflection of desperation rather than that of feeling the crew were expendable since the Allied forces were facing a highly increasing amount of panthers and tigers (1944) compared to previous theatres of war in which they had fought. And, in response to your comment about how the rear is the most vulnerable face, you must keep in mind how their is an extremely large and lengthy in the way which is able to protect the crew. The designers of the archer kept this in mind and this mindset continues to be found in many vehicles today (mainly IFVs) in which the engine itself serves as a piece of 'armour.'
Just getting back into modeling after a 40 year hyatiau . Found you on internet years ago I was pretty good at building made a fair amount of money .Boy has it changed will watch with great interest. Probably ask stupid questions as to were to get kits an I can't imagine the after market had to make it or do with out . Thanks Grumpy
Thanks Andy 4 the brief history of the Archer as well the build. I've got the Bronco version of the Archer, the difference, more parts. Both are fine kits,by the looks of it.
Nicely done Andy! Your videos are great and they are an inspiration for me to do better. Just built my 1st 1/72 Messerschmidt 109B. ;-) Keep on building Andy!
Excellent work Andy. The final close up shots from about the 24 minute mark look so realistic it's untrue . Very well done on the painting and weathering 👍
Another great video! Thumbs up for the background music! My 6 year old son always shout that he knows the music played in background :) He likes watching your videos :) Greetings from Poland :)
The 17 pounder at gun was effective over long to medium ranges, not close as you stated, it was the blast that obscured the target, that made the gun an issue.
So how did they adjust fire? Traversing would be impossible with no driver. They get a call on the radio, adjust fire right - your on top of us. ...." Too bad"
Please enlighten me... I always see Andy put on the NATO black and then highlight in the white. But then, the base coat covers the white. I cannot see any difference of a tonal difference when the base/final coat is applied. Someone please explain to me to what I am missing.... Andy is my go-to guy.... Love his videos...
why do you put dull coat after applying the decals? isn't it better to coat it first with gloss coat, apply wash and then dull coat and then pigments, chipping etc?
Another great build of an interesting vehicle. I know figure painting is a whole different ball game (and I'm certainly no expert!), but I recall you spoke about getting some tuition in that area? How's that coming along?
Another great vid tutorial Andy, might have to contact you since local a Hobby ships are running light to low on vehicles to build. By chance do you have what is available to purchase and ship. Thanks. Happy Modeling always..
Excellent video Andy. A question.. if you weather it, includes pigments etc on tracks and apply buff mist spray, do you dulcote after that as a final step? Regards from Australia 😀
looking forward to this model. :) great video again andy keep up the good work. and you should do a video showing the ones you want to sell and asking price. and would you ship the model overseas.
No, the 17 pounder is a 76.2 mm gun. The '77mm' was a cut down 17 pounder, still 76.2mm, but with a shorter barrel, and reduced propellant charge so as to be mounted in a tank turret - the Comet. It was CALLED a 77mm so as to make sure there was no mixup with ammunition or parts. The same was true of the Soviet 76.2mm gun and the 76.2 mm rocket launcher - the rockets were CALLED 77mm, but were still 76.2mm...
The driver had to get out when they were shooting the weapon, otherwise the recoil of the breech would decapitate him because the vehicle was so small.
However, there is physically not enough space within the fighting compartment for the driver to leave his seat but remain inside. So if he DID move, they'd never get away in time...
rwd76 I am trying to find official paperwork on this but are you insinuating that you must be in the military to have knowledge of military things? That is kind of a slap in the face to modelers that haven't taken on military duties. And many of us, myself included, would have served had it not been for medical reasons that they would not allow. Coming from a 30 year old modeler on the side-you all need to calm down. The original statements were what perplexed us and regardless it is amazing information. There is far too much in-fighting already within the model community. Let's not add more by arguing about this as well.
How the concept of the Archer was born: Thomas are you thinking what I'm thinking? Yeah build it the same way the Germans did with the Jagdpanther and their Jagdpanzer No you blimey idiot I was thinking we should place the main gun backwards that way the driver will have to do a full 180° turn just to have the gunner face what it is to be destroyed! But Max that'll mean the engine will be exposed.. Exactly! The entire crew will be stricken with an adrenaline rush to get the tank facing the right way and kill their targets before they can be destroyed first! Max.. You really... Really need a restraining order on pubs, at least a thousand kilometers away from them.
didn't mean to be rude.. i just don't know why you would do this. I guess its you tube and anyone can post anything. bloody paint the parts first and then........
