I shoot an old 72 Bear Kodiak Magnum. I draw 26 in., I pull 40#. Shooting a 31in, 597gr, Easton XX75 aluminum gamegetter. 2016's, 10.6 GPI. 100 gr brass insert, and 150gr head. Oh baby, they fly like darts. Thanks for you willingness to help out the community. 👍

I had a shoulder injury a while back and had to re-think my archery world. I experimented with a 48 inch child's bow that pulls 30 pounds at my draw length. I put a 29 3/4 inch 1916 with 250 grain point on and it bare shaft tuned like a dart. It only chronographs at 110 fps. Momentum is .299 Slugs which is equivalent to your set up in this video. Guarantee you it is lethal. FOC is 20 percent with 4 inch feathers and lighted nock. Total arrow weight is 614 grains. Due to the heavy arrow, it is extremely quiet. I think you are right about the 3 to 1 broadhead like a Grizzly single bevel or a Zwickey No Mercy upping the potential for good penetration. Ducking the string is a big consideration. Aim low and back several inches behind the shoulder to accommodate drop and roll away and keep shots close. Killed my biggest buck with an old Magnus 2 blade and a 35 pound recurve bow. Arrow weight was about 480 grains.

I appreciate everything you put in this. I just started shooting instinctive ( a week ago) and I taken to it like a duck to water. Only took about ten shots before I started to hit where I was looking. I follow your advice on not thinking about stance, form, distance and so on...just focus on the spot I want to hit and it works. I'm hooked and loving it. God bless.

Hay Jeff, want to let you know, a freind of mine son has been shooting a 37 pound recurve, he's is 16 and then 17 with probably a 25 inch draw length at the time, he got the arrow tuned in perfectly at almost 650 grains with a two bladed broadhead, now he was this age 10 years ago he took two whitetail bucks in two season with this combo, and the one the arrow went right thru scapula shoulder bone it was aluminum arrows he was using back then can't remember shaft size, but I remember his father put arrow rope inside shaft too give it the weight. Actually I would love too see you do a test with that 37 pound recurve with a 650 grain heavy fOC and see what happens on test. Have a great night 🌙 Jeff every show you do gets me excited 😊

Jeff, I really enjoyed this video. I have a 37# at 26" bamboo backed tri lam bow that I built. I am using 3 Rivers new Autumn Orange 1916 XX75 shafts cut to 28" with stock nocks and inserts and 175 grain points with 5" feathers. The flight is great and the weight of these arrows is the magical 500 grains total weight. I know you like the GT Warriors, I also like and use them along with GT traditionals in both 5/16 and 9/32 shafting. I am getting better flight with my bow shooting the 1916's than I am out of the carbons. I am wanting to use this bow to hunt with this Fall and your videos on light weight hunting bows are very helpful.

I shot a 700 spine warrior shaft, cut to 27 inches, stock light short insert, 300 grain point. Ended up being about 530 grains. This was a hickory self bow I made, likely shooting just under 150 fps with that arrow at around 39 lbs at 26.5 inch draw. I put the arrow in the vital V on a doe last year at 8 yards and broke the heavy leg bone on the off side, sheared the heavy leg bone in half. Using glue on old Magnus heads with vents, bent the head pretty bad and slightly curled tip. If you get close to 500 grains with high FOC you will be fine.

I'm getting ready to move up to 50 lbs but first I need to see if I can shoot it as well. I feel my arms getting stronger from daily practice. #37 recurve bamboo in limbs, Center shot riser, thin calf hair strike plate. 28.5” draw length Gold tip 500 29.75” with standard 12gr insert and 175gr head or I can shoot aluminum 1916 29.5” with 125 point and standard insert. No wrap on either arrow. The aluminums tune easier. But. They don’t get the foc like the carbons do. They end up around 450-465 gr total. I would like to have a little heavier. But I think I will have to go up in spine and then add a lot of weight on the front and be too heavy.

Jeff, I have been following your channel for a while as I have transitioned to a 45lb Longbow from my compound at age 67... Using some of your data and the Ranch Fairy's shows I have been using a 200gr single bevel VPA broadhead at about 152 FPS and my arrow weight is about 430gr at 28.25". I'm estimating my draw weight is about 42-43 lbs and my FOC is about 23.4% forward of center on these 28.625 (nock to insert) vs 21" (nock to balance point) in my arrows. I have it all in a spreadsheet if you want to see it. All that said I am hearing you say I need an additional 50-75gr of weight... by going to lumenocks I can gain about 14grs and a 50gr insert puts me about where you are in the video. Your thoughts please.

Q: If you can have such good penetration and accuracy with a light weight bow - is there any point in shooting a heavy bow for shots under 25 yards?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
Probably the only real difference is speed in that scenario but then shooting more pounds does allow for more arrow weight which will have even greater momentum and with live animals moving around and reacting like they do my honest opinion is to hunt with as many pounds as you can shoot well during cold weather for the what if’s but a quiet bow is most important probably.

Hey Jeff, I get it now. That 600 spine arrow already had fletchings on it and you were not showing us a bare shaft arrow. Fletchings will definitely level the playing field and it's very difficult to get a perfect flying bare shaft. Get it close and so what if it nocks either way a little bit. If it flies good then call it a success. I'm a perfectionist and that's hard for me to say, but it's reality. Do I want to shoot the bow or constantly tinker with the arrows? I choose shooting the bow.
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 7 месяцев назад
Absolutely! You can drive yourself crazy tinkering with perfection and sometimes I just rough tune a bow with an arrow that flies great with a broadhead and let it rip lol. Just going to pop my 2 cents in here. I just built two different set ups for my 50# recurve that I pull to around 48lbs. A super light weight 364gn hunting arrow and a 478gn hunting arrow. Light weight gives me 199fps and the 478 gives me 170fps. When you run those numbers you see I gain 29fps with the light arrows but lose almost zero momentum or KE. The actual loss is like .005 of a slug moving from the heavier to light arrow. Check out the podcast Dudley did Joel Maxfield. The research shows the lighter arrows are just as deadly and all this heavy arrow stuff with no speed and terrible trajectory just isn’t necessary. Plenty of guys shoot clear through elk and moose with low poundage and 400gn and under arrows. The what if you hit bone argument isn’t valid. Not even compounds and even some bullets make it through thick bone. Speed kills and we’re not shooting plywood in the woods. Animals are much easier to punch through.
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 11 месяцев назад
I respect your opinion on arrows and it sounds like you’re settled on the speed side no matter what but from personal experience with traditional equipment no way would I dare to hunt with an arrow that light, that’s why I did all the testing and video on arrow penetration from a 43# recurve just to show the difference in light versus heavy and it cannot be disputed that heavier arrows carry the momentum down range and even 199 fps out of a traditional bow is still very very slow compared to a compound and nowhere near as much KE for sure I honestly can’t bring myself to have confidence in any arrow under 400 grains for killing penetration but with that said again I respect everyone’s opinions and don’t want to get into any disputes at all just putting out what I believe in for the public wanting everyone to be successful in their hunting setups.
@samgauvine7816
@samgauvine7816 11 месяцев назад
I’ll admit I only have a couple whitetail under my belt with the light set up. But both were pass throughs and one was straight down through the back, out the chest and hurried in the ground. The other was a broadside shot and went through the deer like it didn’t hit a thing. My max distance is 20-25yds as well. The math doesn’t lie though. When you punch the numbers in for the lighter arrow and speed and the heavier arrow and speed the momentum is almost identical, less than a half slug difference. I’ve had a couple deer jump the string and duck my arrow. Hence why I wanted to gain the 29fps. Nice sharp 2 blade magnus stinger, perfect arrow flight and an accurate shot pushes the arrow through deer sized game like hot butter. If I was hunting anything bigger I’d go heavier for peace of mind, plus the bigger game isn’t as fast twitch so I wouldn’t worry about speed. Anyways it’s just two different schools of thought and both get the job done. But at 20yds and in my arrows aren’t losing enough momentum for me to not want more speed and a flatter trajectory. Especially on public land where I can’t cut branches and have to thread the needle. I respect the heck out of you though sir and I’m sure you’re a deer shooting machine. So good luck this year and stay safe out there! Ps I didn’t want to argue or debate either just wanted to add that there’s plenty of women and teenagers that shoot low poundage and their margin for error is less with an adequate but faster arrow, speaking in terms of kill depth and what not.
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 11 месяцев назад
@@samgauvine7816 I can’t say I disagree at all to a certain extent with a sharp two blade head like the stinger as long as it’s fairly close shot which with traditional gear it should be lol the reason I’m such a believer in heavier (500 grain and up) arrows is because I have had so much more success with them and have had some heartbreaking losses with too light setups, But I also took my best traditional buck ever at 32 yards with a 480 grain arrow out of a 49# C2 recurve and yes it was doing upper 180’s on the graph so the speed definitely made a difference and yes it was almost a complete pass through 👍🏻

My arrows are 30” and I draw 28 (just bareshafted them recently). Thoughts? Also are you a proponent of outserts or is that mostly for compound? Thank you for the great videos. Keep ‘em coming!
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
I think you’re really good with that setup, the traditional xt’s are thick walled and heavy with the factory shock collar they’re super tough and plenty heavy especially with 200 gr, and the factory 80 gr. Inserts you don’t want to go down in spine at all and I run collars on all.204 smaller diameter arrows 👍🏻

@craigjones7401 Год назад
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I’m not sure mine have 80g factory inserts, I think the ones that came with them are just light aluminum ones but either way I trust you that they’ll be enough. If I was to get some goldtip warriors as for some backup arrows should I be able to run the same setup with out much change?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@@craigjones7401 yes sir and the Classic XT’s come with weighted inserts and 15 grain black shock collars, they’re already set up for good FOC, the warriors are lighter but you can load the front and they’re great!

· if I was using Victory X-Torsion ·400 spine, which is an EXTREMELY HEAVY g.p.i. shaft, of ·204" size, and my arrow build became 600+ total grains, could I still get penetration @ 25 yrds, using #37 pounds Draw Weight traditional recurve bow?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 7 месяцев назад
They would be way too stiff to tune also extremely heavy for the draw weight, they’re honestly suited for a 65# compound lol , I would regroup and get some 600’s depending on your draw length but if it’s anywhere around 28” that’s what I’d build and run 250 grains plus on them just figure out what will bare shaft even if you have to order a test kit from 3rivers and get it shooting the heaviest point weight that’ll bare shaft laser straight that’s where the penetration will come from in a light weight bow👍🏻

Another awesome video Jeff. I am in the injured shoulder camp. My bow arm shoulder. I really could use some actual hands on help with this very thing. How does someone go about getting in touch with you?

Jeff, What is the significance of the arrow wrap, I shoot a 35 lb longbow and I want to build a lighter arrow I currently shoot 500 spine carbon 29.5 inch draw, does the wrap add weight?
@Skidmizer
@Skidmizer 6 дней назад
Adding a wrap helps if your arrow is ever so slightly weak and you can't or don't want to cut it any shorter any added weight to the rear stiffins up the arrow ever so slightly

Yes sir I shoot both and tried it both ways and it flew great no matter which way so I was delighted with the flight!

Hey Jeff I’m shooting a Easton legacy 500 29” from my new bear paw 45lb. Recurve Insert and flexed I’ve started with a 150gn point and having bad nock left . Arrow weak? Any advice ? Total arrow 432 gun. Bow is center shot should I move out rest. More point or more nock weight. I could cut maybe 1/2 to 3/4 and replace feathers or insert. (Help!)
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
Yes sir if you’re right handed and they’re hitting nock left they’re weak which means you’ll have to cut them down a little or go up a spine, try nock tuning them first especially with legacy arrows just rotate it 180 degrees and see what it does.

Shoot it into a new spot on the plywood and see what happens. You keep shooting in the middle where the second sheet of plywood is all shot up and possibly going through an existing hole. Youve got to eliminate these things from your tests
@dalecharles811
@dalecharles811 Год назад
Test is skewed until you shoot that broad head into the wood, because that’s what you’ll be shooting at a deer, shoot the wood w that head then your test is valid
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
Thank you sir will do for sure, we were able to get through with arrows over 500 grains with a 43# recurve so I it would be interesting to see but from actually shooting these and hearing the impact in person I feel they are definitely adequate for hunting whitetail 💯

@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I weighed my arrows and found that by adding 50 grains to my 3d set up my 43# bow arrows are now close to 500 grains, fly the same and 20 yards or less no appreciated drop, feeling better about my arrows now!!!! Keep up the videos

I have 30# x core bow I bought for learning on. I'm aiming on getting bow for hunting. I pull nearly 28". I am looking at 40# 45#. I'm 40 now. Started at 39. Always shooting old pallet air rifles. What I would say. Recurve way stronger. Ask my garage door. I could of done this 20 years ago. Anyway. I am looking at bear kodiak. I wouldn't be able to shoot 50# bow. I can feel it's my limit. Prefer to enjoy it then pull my life around 😂😂😂 I am from south africa. Where my mom stays she has small piece land but around her land as far as your eye can see. There buck everywhere. Only thing that eats me. What if I run into bush pig or waterbuck. I have seen water buck. There is game farm next door. 😮 anyway. There small buck waist hight. Even buck size of cat. Those I won't shoot or eat. I would say there millions things to shoot. If you go out walking or driving. Out of 10 trips you would see food. 😊. Did go hunting with friend. Buck was 10m away. I think buck was bullet proof 🤫. It's winter now. I'm in durban. So jealous. 😢.

Last time I was there. I saw buck being chased by jackal for at least 20min. This was deep farm land.

@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 yeah I wish when I started shooting a trad bow 26 years ago I had someone knock some sense onto me. I think my first recurve was 65 lbs. Ego and stupidity I guess. I got very good at killing stuff when I dropped weight.
