Gosh I’d love to follow Lou around and listen to him describe and evaluate every boat on the water in every port in the northeast. I enjoy every posting with Lou talking about his love of life.

Hey Lou, thank you for sharing your many hard-earned, practical insights to wood boat design, construction and repair. Your standards are very high quality and your fearless approach to major repairs and new original designs is fascinating to me. Your video channel has helped to remove much of the mystery surrounding wooden boat construction and hull repairs. Your insightful comments of what may seem obvious to you, are in fact very helpful and instructive to my untrained eye. I share your enthusiasm and love for boats. From your detailed explanations on video of how to identify, deconstruct and proceed with corrections and repairs to wood hull boats has been a lasting inspiration for me and given me the encouragement to delve into D.I.Y. repairs and alterations of my sailboat. There are many other broadcasters of DIY boat hull maintenance and refurbishment, but I find your presentations to be the most helpful. Thank you so very much for enabling me to proceed with confidence to make repairs. The many different boat repair products available today do not come with practical explanations of how to choose the best solution. However, your recommendations of thoughtful and creative solutions never confuse me and are presented in a very practical manner. One example of how you have enlightened me is in your aversion for dust, ...yes saw dust, ...the byproduct of sanding surfaces for shape and finish. I have learned to use hand planes and a router to minimize dust.

Might be the best thing ever to see Lou row some boats and talk for a bit about others projects with enthusiasm. Thanks!

Louis, this episode was a real treat. This was so different from The ones you do inside your shop. Your enthusiasm and knowledge is so infectious I really began to appreciate all the different styles of boats. Heck I don’t even understand a third of the terms you are using but you sure have piqued my interest. Thanks for keeping such good variety on your channel.

Great to see the Mayflower II again. My father was friend of Stewart Upham and we spent one summer vacation in Brixham watching her being built. I still have an oak "nail" somewhere. Glad to see she is being restored to her former beauty.

Great to hear someone else has a love of workboats. Nothing nicer than big, heavily built boats, big samson posts etc. I always wanted to own an old timber tugboat, used to be a few nice ones around the 40ft size where I grew up. Nice plumb bows, big bevelled stems, big beefy rubbing strakes!

Mystic Seaport is hugely educational and entertaining. My first visit was 30 years ago with my school age daughters. Shortly after that we at least had to buy a canoe. LOL. Soon it is my grandson's turn to visit. He loves tools. We might have to build a pram.

I agree with you on the workboat preference. I’ve worked at the Boathouse there for 18 years and my three favorite boats are Emma C. Berry, Breck Marshall (been sailing for years as well), and Nellie.

there are wedges on both ends of the Trunnels. the inner ended wedge is driven in by the blind end of the hole as the trunnel is driven in..

'Loved this episode, so much to see. Please, if you are able, keep us informed on the progress of the Mayflower. It would be good to see how they are getting on but your knowledgeable commentary would add so much more to the experience.

I was unaware of the wooden boat show and visited Mystic the first of July 2018 but missed the show. I will make plans to visit the show in 2019. We had record heat in the 90s and I went north to get away from the heat. I build model boats and went to view the Emma C Berry. I looked at the Nellie while there and would love to make a model of that if I can get some dimensions. Nice design.

Hey if your into working sailboats you gotta check out the Chesapeake bay skipjacks they are beautiful work boats that dredge for oysters they are the last sailpowered work boats in north America. Built here in Maryland

Great Vlog, your knowledge is outstanding. Can’t wait to see the final work on your dory. My only negative comment is that it would have been a good idea to wear a buoyancy aid (personal buoyancy) when you went out for on the water. Need to set a good example!

Black Locust has made up a the majority of my firewood for many years, but I never cut it green. I find dead-falls and blow-downs and logging wastes that have been on the ground for 20-30 years. It is amazing how rot resistant the stuff is.

Lou, I'm sure you know about the Hjemkomst from my hometown of Moorhead, MN. A big Viking ship built on the plains.

Great clip I love boat shows. Wonderful to see the re building of the Mayflower, is it the original ship from the early 1600's or a replica? Google suggests that the Mayflower was probably broken up in Rotherhithe?? I have been to the dock in Plymouth England from where the Mayflower departed with the Pilgrims aboard. Brave people, I have read an account of a settler and his family who were shipwrecked on the New england coast he and his wife survived but all of his children were drowned but they picked themselves up and started a new family some of whose descendants still live there. After re watching I see that this is Mayflower 2 built in 1957. Thanks.

Yes to workboats. A number of years ago an architect and I built a quite expensive house here in Austin Texas, The mandate was to fit the neighborhood and the site using modern, but proven technologies and to be a "lobster boat, not a yacht". Worked out well. That Scandinavian dory like boat at 3:15. Look at the rudder, the stern post is higher than the rudder head, and there's a square hole in the rudder head. I suppose there must be a transverse square bar that fits the hole, probably with tiller lines to control the rudder, but how do you make the bar to rudder joint solid enough? And the rudder's hung at an unusual angle which, if not balanced correctly can make it very difficult to steer. I love Peapod's, and I miss rowing. BTW, nice feather technique on the oars (I noticed it before you explained it). Right hand over left for me. Almost expected you to snap the oars out of the locks, but yeah probably wouldn't do that with a borrowed boat. I've only been to Mystic once, back in 1962 I think, but I remember the Mayflower well, it was in the water then and I scrambled all over it. In the 90's I worked on the rebuild of the Columbus Fleet replicas in Corpus Christi TX. Erm, let's just say it wasn't the best idea to lease the ships and display them in hot humid Texas, then leaving them unprotected in the ship channel where the Santa Maria and Pinta got nailed by a barge and had to be move to a "temporary" drydock pretty much sealed their fate. There was never enough interest or money to fix them correctly, nor did the administration have any idea what it would take to maintain them, let alone repair them. Basta. That's when I went back to school for CS.

There is something rather special about a ketch rig in my mind. Shame that there aren't more of them out there.
