Welcome back to the Open Door Boatshop and our TotalBoat work skiff! What a project it's been, this week we will finish off with some drilling of the quarter knees and install the last knee in our transom. Drilling is one of the most complicated procedures in all of boat building. We need to get our placement and direction right before we start drilling to avoid making any major mistakes at this late stage. Then I'm going to rip our final knee out of a large piece of lumber and scribe that into the boat until we have nice fit and we're happy with the look and shape.
Also, don't forget to tune in for our last episode of the skiff series next week and come meet Lou and see the TotalBoat work skiff with your own eyes on Saturday April 22 8-3pm at the Jamestown Distributors Annual Tent Sale in Bristol, RI. / 1881472075431438

Even if you never come within a mile of a boat this guy's skill and knowledge transfers to so many things you can't help but pick up something useful.

Bitter Sweet to actually hear and learn the skiff build is coming to an end very soon. We knew it was coming all along, but still. What a great show about building the skiff. Lou - Thanks for all the good work and the teaching, and to TotalBoat and You Tube for making this series possible. I guess I'll have to train myself to just understand what's next. Also can't wait to see it float and do what it is meant to do. Just hope the soon to be new owner puts videos on You Tube so we can see how it's doing and knows the value of this skiff throughout the ages. I really hope there is another series for another boat and soon. To all the other folks watching and commenting; Your comments and questions just as interesting as the build too. Thanks Again. Beautiful Boat indeed.

Thanks! I waited for a long time for this particular technique demonstratrated. I am glad to finally to see it. Also, I stopped and watched a shipwright repairing a deadrise boat is the local boatyard in Reedville Va. He was replacing the floor planking amidships. It was good to already know what he was doing and have an idea about the species of wood he was installing. This came from having watched this series.

In the restoration of a vintage F-1 car, early '90s, I had to drill a hole (for tapping) into the sump casting of a Cosworth DFV; not a cheap part and already mated to the block. Someone at that time made a hand drill motor with flat sides, both those and the top of the motor parallel to the drill C/L. It got used-up and tossed, but I am amazed that no one has offered a comparable drill motor to help the folks trying to do what you did.

I must say I've enjoyed watching this channel so much that I time out from my day job (as graphic designer) and enrolled into a local Boat Building School. The boat I'll be making is the John G. Alden 1927 Indian Class a 21'2" day day sailing boat also known as the Nantucket Indian. An annual regatta is held at Nantucket, the tiny, isolated island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts where these Indians are part of 7 boats competing there. If I can get over my camera shyness I'll be making a documentary of the build as I feel video is better then a flickr account of stills. Just maybe some other people might get inspired to walk away from there laptops and smart phones for a brief stretch of their lives and take up an artisan type craft to create something let's say 'less digital' to be admired for generations.
