Was gonna say the same. Also he made sure to align the wood grain perfectly everywhere else, but somehow chose to go all mixed when gluing this sliding door. I admire the engineering and think it's absolutely brilliant though. Could the door also be solved by having the dampers in two stages instead of two at the same stage?

It's extremely well engineered and surely satisfying. I feel though there were a few simpler ways to do that. For instance this doesn't eliminate the need to keep the counter clear (so a tambour is not exactly a necessity) and if you're always swiveling the platform out, a full extension shallow drawer (or even just a shelf) would have done the trick. Just place the coffee machine facing you all the time (i.e. turn it counterclockwise 90° seen from the top) on a sliding shelf behind a hinged door and you've achieved 95% of the same functionality.

What a missed opportunity not to drive the tray with the door and power it all with a servo such that when you nudge the door up a little, the motor kicks in, slides the door up, and pushes the tray out at the same time.... overengineer it all the way!! xD

I think, each time I see your video, that my mind will blow up. As other says, you should add counter weight, or make the front thinner, or try to put a bigger gas spring, because in the next time(week, year or decades) the power of the little one will decide. But for everything you make fantastic things
@Jigglers010101

Add a counter weight to the back edge (or hanging from the back edge) of the tambour door. That will make closing more gentle as well as making it easier to open. That's what they did on the old roll top desks. Fantastic videos. Been a fan for a long time. Please keep them coming!
@thecalvaro

I have the same idea, but then the opening will not be smooth. Maybe if you have a latch to have the counterweight grabbed on while closing and release when it is opening. Complicated, yes, but too simple will not be an Alex project. 😂

Cool! A simple and less cool solution (from someone with the same kitchen layout): Buy the "garage door" pre-made, make the countertop go into the cabinet, and put felt pads (the type you put on furniture) under your coffee machine, grinder etc. and just slide them in and out. I've had it for around 1 year and it's great! (incl. high wife approval factor).

Your tambour door could be as thin as an ice cream stick without compromising usability because the fabric behind it adds a ton of strength to it if you use good glue. Furthermore, counter weights which spring into action mid way will work better than a pressure gas spring. More so if you use tension gas springs or invisible door shock gas springs. Cool project nonetheless. I love doing these kinds of projects as well but I don't have the space.
@namewarvergeben
@namewarvergeben Год назад
The fabric doesn't provide any rigidity against inward bending, which could be quite significant on a large flat surface as this. That could add friction to the point of jamming or derailing the whole thing, and generally make it feel flimsy I suppose the strips could be made hollow without losing too much rigidity, but that might not be worth the extra effort Other than that, I agree on the counterweights

“And the whole thing…HA!” 😂 Sir, you’ve done it again! Really cool idea presented really well. I love it. 🍻 2 downward closers was my first thought, and I’m surprised it turned out less effective than I expected. Really living with it, personally, is most days it would remain open. I could probably just lower it further by hand when the time comes to close it. Btw, I enjoy how well your foresight works out! The whole project really comes together well and you seem to have been very successful at preparing for untested ideas implemented later.
@porchetpierre-alexandre5732
for the slinding door, if it's not enough, as said by other, you could use a counterweight, but you could also une a gas strut form a car (a small one). im not sure it's heavy enough but it worth a try. Wonder motion on the drawer by the way.

Suggestion for the filter bit for the coffee machine: make something that holds and keeps it over the sink. Those things tend to drip for a while after washing, so you wanna keep it somewhere it can drip without ruining anything, at least temporarily, so why not permanently? Maybe a wall mounted holder with a joint: folded down and out it can drip dry over the sink, then be folded up and out of the way.

There are similar products on the market, it´s basically a piece of plywood on wheels. All you need to do is add a guide on the side (3D print) and a hinge on the end to swivel around. Not saying it´s a bad solution, it isn´t it´s just more complicated with more parts than need be. The idea is great though.
