As someone who trained as an engineer back in the 1970's (a 5yr apprenticeship) I am blown away with the way you have self taught engineering and many other skills not available back then. This Desk has to be one of your most gratifying builds, I suspect! especially as the recipient is someone, who, despite life challenges, has a superb attitude and special skillset in engineering herself. You are the Man Jeremy! A fantastic engineering and artistic project you, and your fellow makers, can be proud of. Well Done Sir.

I went through electrical engineering in the late 80s. There is a part of me wishing I had the resources I have today then. I would have done so much better in class. I got lucky in my career choice in medical imaging. I do still enjoy knowing why things work the way they do. It takes a lot more time to learn it on your own... I admire people who are self taught. Its difficult and time consuming. As with any education its all how you use it. Congratulations for working through all the issues. Never stop working the problem!...

As a quadriplegic Mechanical engineer, this felt so good to watch. I just started my professional career (post PhD), but I hope to be able to dedicate my time and skills to developing assistive technology to improve independence to those who lost it!

Glad you came to that realization sooner than me! I too am a quad ME but I spent a few years working on racecar engineering before realizing users of adaptive equipment should be helping design that equipment. I'm on a temporary hiatus from most of my engineering currently while doing disability policy work, but plan to get back to it in a couple years. I really appreciate the collaboration on this project, Jeremy noted at one point she sent the design criteria.

That's amazing! Really liked seeing how you incorporated plywood and metal to support the 3D prints. But I think the real jewel of the whole video is the last sentence -when asked what she's going to make - "You never know when you get bored when you have a bunch of random components in a toolbox"

When I heard her say that... I had to end the video with that! She touched something that immediately resonated with makers!

I make weird stuff in imaginary 3D land all the time, and this is the first time one of my wild concept models has been taken to the finish line in real life. It's surreal. Jeremy you are a wizard, I don't know how you put all that together despite all our sloppy modeling practices. And to have it be for such an awesome cause, and such an awesome person in Jenica is the real triumph here.

This was brilliant. I had no idea how anyone would fabricate the design you received, particularly in a one-person shop, but with your resources, smart subcontracting and practical experience it's no surprise how amazing the results are. I also want to add that I personally appreciate your attention to Janica's constraint specs. It looks like the desk fits perfectly in her room, and that may not have been the case if you hadn't corrected the dimensions. It may sound silly to praise an engineer for being precise, but I'm someone who struggles with perfectionism and mild OCD, and I can't begin to express how those little things can impact someone like me, so it's worth appreciating. 💜 Thank you as well for introducing me to The Smugglers Room! They did justice to your fabrication and to the original design. I don't know if Janica streams, but with an incredible setup like this, if she didn't before, she should start now.

We would use methylene chloride as a solvent for acrylics. For the edges we would flame glaze the edges with an oxy-acetylene torch. Also, if you are able, mix methylene chloride with acrylic shavings, place it on a roller until the mixture is thick and clear. It can then be used as a filler or filleting material. Takes practice, but it is worth it in the end. Good work though. The desk looks beautiful. And yes, I am a fan of Dr. Who. Love the series.
@DudleyToolwright

To make the cut edges clear: cut, sand, scrape (as with a cabine scraper), and the run an oxyacetylene torch very quickly over the edge to make perfectly clear. This trick is used in the special effects depts. all of the time.

Working in the mechanical contractor field for over 3 decades now, I can say what a pleasure it is to see an engineer be hands on from design to delivery! The multi faceted learning that you have done just to complete this, is amazing! For delivering this to a young lady who is up and coming in her field, it will be a daily inspiration for her every day to hone her skills. I was brought here from The Smugglers Room. Jeremy / Smugglers Room / Solidworks , thank you for your skills and generosity! Definitely subscribed.

Amazing job finishing that with a time constraint. I made the assumption as you were building that it would be a computer workstation. As someone who solders and builds circuits, when she said it will be used for that purpose, I can imagine the acrylic would get damaged and scratched pretty quickly. Wondering if a thin acrylic sheet that can easily be installed on top of the desk. This way it can easily be replaced and still maintain the look of the desk. Amazing video and great inspiration!

I once used chloroform to weld acrylic, had to get permission as it required license. Applied via syringe with tiny needle and wicked into touching surfaces. It was almost invisible, but when time came to disassemble (used for advertisement once only) the 'weld' areas were stronger than base material, it was smashed with sledgehammer!
