connecting both monitor and camera to the same v-lock there is the risk of a short circuit, it has already happened to me on two cameras, I burned two HDMIs, I don't understand why all the RU-vidrs continue to assemble rigs in this way without warning of the possible risks.
Hey Jared! Thank you so much for this amazing video! Just a quick question in terms of the Matte Box, how quick are you able to do a lens change? I was thinking of mostly using the 35mm and 50mm gmaster and was wondering if it was as easy as being able to swap the lens and just shift the Matte Box back and fourth on the rails or was there any further adjustments required?
Might be a pet peeve of mine but more B roll would have been nice as each piece was being added to the main one. You had a lot of jump cuts and an easy fix for that is put some b roll in-between those cuts and it makes it a lot more smoother! Other than that, great video! Love seeing people build custom rigs!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback! For the next review I’ll try to incorporate more broll of the build so there’s a better view. I’ll probably try using an actual script too. A lot of the jump are in there simply because of my lack of experience talking to the camera so I cut out a lot of uhs and ums lol
I just found your channel and noticed you haven’t uploaded in a while. I love the look and feel of your videos and hope you get back on the RU-vid train. Your filming is beautiful and sparks my own creativity which I’m super grateful for. Hope whatever you’re doing, you’re enjoying it. Going to search for your other socials for some more content!
Awesome video man. Id love to see this compared to the fx6, what it can and can’t do. Gotta say i was surprised to see that you’re a small/new channel, your video quality is so good i thought you were anothe one of those 2-300k subs channel! I’m sure you’ll get there quickly with this quality of video! Right on and hoping to see that comparison soon.
Super vid! Just a quick note, you can easily take off the stoppers on the mini FF. If you dismantle it, take them out. It’s quite a simple design and easy to reassemble. Another cool option would be to have an upgrade version with the Tilta side follow focus handle with nucleus N set up. Subscribed ! 💪🏻
That looks so good, the part of the Vmount and screen, my FX3 rig is also inspired by DSLR shooter. Love that handheld look from a rig like this, always give me great results
Thank you! It’s super functional too, being able to see all the camera settings quickly has been super useful for me, I always hated having to peak behind the Vmount!
@@danjdickman there's nothing prevent me from doing this, the rig can freely open battery door. Actually there's no need to change frequently because V mount id too good.
@@danjdickman oh, I didn't remove it since my rig fits. It's a matter of how high your rig is, I use Nitze's V mount and Smallrig baseplate, it just fit right very tightly. If there's a higher V mount plate then it's gonna be easier
Amazing break down, thanks! And I like you mentioned that the price and weight end up being like a FX6 once your FX-3 rig reached feature parity. I also noticed that when looking to buy FX3 or FX6 and I did my comparisons. Probably will go with the FX6 now that it has firmware v2.0, the advantages of FX3 are no longer there. Except the small size, doing public shooting without getting bothered will be hard with the big one ;)
That’s awesome! I’m considering pick up an FX6 this year and running it as my primary and using this as my secondary because of the update and built in NDs. Hope you enjoy the FX6!
This video is perfect! Best FX3 rig I’ve seen with all the links and prices, and the production quality itself is amazing, especially the studio shots of the rig🔥 looking forward to your future content!
this setup is a dream!! what tripod are you using for your a-cam set up? also if i have the PM VND 2-5stop mist, what matte box might you recommend instead?
Thanks! This is the Manfrotto 504HD head and 535 carbon fiber tripod. Also, you can use the circular PM VND on the Tilta Mirage, they can mount right to the front threads inside the matte box. Hope that helps!
Amazing rig setup. Best I’ve seen! Do you ever use zoom lenses for your documentary run and gun shooting? If so how do you get around the matte box/VND issue? It’s the only thing that’s making me question this over the fx6 (if they ever come back in stock again!)
Great full featured rig! But it should be pointed out that while having filter threads on the Mirage lens adapters is great, if you have a filter on it (like a Pro-Mist) you won't be able to use the main 95mm filter slot on the matte box. You can add a second stage 95mm filter tray, one for the VND and one for a Mist or other filter, but then you're limited to a maximum wide lens of about 35mm because of vignetting the additional tray causes. If you want the combo of the Tilta VND + Mist + wider than 35mm, you'll have to put the mist filter directly on the lens before the matte box adapter or use a 4x5.65 Mist filter $$$ in the front of the matte box. Alternatively, and ultimately the best way (but slower) is to use the Vaxis fixed value ND filters (superior to the VND) combined with a mist filter in the Tilta Dual 95mm filter holder in the main slot.
Solid points! I have run into that issue and used a couple of the solutions you mentioned, I also really prefer the fixed NDs to a VND. Slightly more annoying to get in place but the color / image is significantly better, thanks for pointing that out!
Thank you for this amazing video. This gave me so much clarity and finally helped me figure out what all these pieces are and what they are supposed to do. This was super valuable to me.
Hi Jared, have you had any issues with the WD 1TB SSD for the Ninja V? Atomos' site lists it only supported under ProRes RAW, not ProRes RAW HQ nor 2k 240p as well. I'm about to purchase everything so any insight would be very helpful!
Love this rig! Thanks for sharing 🤙🏻 Do you find the 35mm is all you need in a doc style shoot? My go-to is the 24-105 for it's versatility but obviously zooms wouldn't work with a setup like this (matte box etc).
Thanks! When I need a zoom that is telescopic I typically swap out the Tilta mirage matte box for a circular VND and run it that way! This setup takes no time to swap out lenses though so it’s never held me up. I usually try to stick to primes for handheld doc stuff just because I prefer the look over zooms, but the zoom I use the most is the Canon 70-200 2.8 mkiii and that lens is fully contained so there is no telescoping and can be used with a fixed setup like this. Hope that’s helpful!
What would you recommend to do if I wanted to be able to use this rig set up but also be able to quickly put the camera on a gimbal without having to take everything apart?
I think that this setup would mount to the ronin rs2 and you could just take the monitor off to mount onto the gimbal handle. You could also just quick release the fx3 from the rig and mount it to a gimbal! It takes ~45 seconds to take the camera off of the base plate system. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I haven’t had any issues with fan noise issues from the Ninja with the ECM mic. Also, I think the latest firmware update allows fan control for the Ninja, so if there was a notable issue you could reduce the fan speed. Hope that helps!
@@jaredlank yes, we updated firmware.. but we didn't shoot anything yet with this setup.. So we just wanna double-check with you cause u have more experience. And to be honest, we thought no one will use that ECM mic... it's super old model but still outstanding :) Good choice to save some money!
I've been here the hole time wondering about if that tilted camera setup in the back near your Mac is for film scanning. Is it? It'd be awesome to see a small break down if posible. So many doubts on this one. SUPER NICE video btw. It just made me want a FX3 even more of what I did hahaha. Keep on! 😁
Sony dedicates millions of $ in R&D to craft a nice compact camera, just for us to spend an addition $2000 to build them out to a larger form factor of an FX6 without XLRs, Built-in VNDs, or button layout :( FX3 Rig: $5400 FX6: $4800 (used market)
How much does you setup weigh? Did you messure that maybe? Feeling I need to rethink my A7siii Rig because I really need a EasyRig for mine and I want a more versatile Run&Gun Setup. Thanks in advance!
Quick question for the small rig v mount battery plate what screwdriver do you use to remove the red lever. Trying to do the same thing with having my camera screen flip out but the red lever is blocking it. Thanks!
So detailed and informative! Thank you so much for making this, I may try to build mine out like yours😃 That must’ve taken a lot of time and money to figure out the perfect set up like that
HI I currently shoot with an older Xt3 and im looking to upgrade. Im trying to decide between 2 full frame cameras. The new Lumix s5iix or the older Sony A7siii. My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect. My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better. My goal to get the best quality 4k 60 video. Thank you
Enjoyed it 2 years later, still very relevant. If you’re still answering questions, here is mine: what makes you trust the hot shoe mount with all of this weight when there are so many stories of failure at this mount leading to rigs crashing to concrete? I have been trying to figure out how to start an A7iv rig with a full cage, top handle, monitor, and mic, but the mic is the problem. There are some great Sony mics for the hot shoe, but they all seem to be severely compromised as soon as you mount a cage/top handle setup. Your mic setup here, connected with a 3.5mm jack, seems to be the best solution?
Hello Jared! I just ordered WD 1TB SSD as you are using it. Which adapter are you using for computer? Are you have Atomos official docking station or if you using different brand would you recommend?
Great rundown! Thanks so much for taking the time to go into all those details. There are so many things that are easy to overlook when putting together a rig in your mind, especially those tiny details with cages, clamps, handles etc. So other people’s experience is invaluable. Thanks again man.
Thanks for making this video! Appreciate the insight and the attention to detail. I've been going mad with research for the best FX3 rig and you convinced me to go with this setup 🙏🏻
This is an impressive rig, but IMHO it's an overkill and unnecessary. If someone needs all these whistles and bells, he can just go for the fx6. BTW, nothing else comes even close to the electronic ND of fx6. The fx3 is designed to be portable like a mirrorless camera, to be handheld like a mirrorless camera, to be easily mounted on a gimbal or on vehicles, etc. If your fx3 rig weighs over 4lb, or is too big to fit in, let's say, a ronnie rs3, then my advice is: step back and rethink about your use case. A camera, essentially, is a tool to take pictures in a way how YOU see the world. It's not a jewelry or some symbol, it's not meant for impressing others or showing off a "professional" look. The best camera is the camera you can always bring with you in any situation. A-N-Y-S-I-T-U-A-T-I-O-N. Everyone is encouraged to explore their own shooting styles and find the setup that works best for them. but it's just sad to see folks spending too much time buying and rigging up the cameras, thinking that the next gadget is all they need to make them a better filmmaker. This is not professionalism, it's consumerism.
Had thought about an FX3 system but then DJI gave us the Ronin 4D - I’d NEVER look back … having CAMS & doing buildouts is just too expensive & a total headache. Get a RONIN 4D & have a complete package that does it all on a pro cine level.
Hello. I bought a VI mount for a Small Rig battery. And the battery latch prevents the screen from being tilted to the side! (((You just sawed it off on Tilt? Or is there some kind of plug?
Hi Jared, I just found your video. Thx for sharing such a great fx3 build. I was wondering if you could share your source about the Tilta v-mount hack? Thx and best regards, Rodian
Hey Jared, dope video man!!!! I’m revising my rig based on yours. My only question is how did you remove the handle on the V-mount plate? I have a small rig version and I’m not sure if i need to have the tilta model to make it work. Thanks for the awesome vid.
amazing videos, and this rig build is probably the most comprehensive in the web. i’ve got a question though, do you sell a titles pack, did you buy one somewhere or do you make your titles manually?
Hi Jared, very cool video. I know you've moved on from this rig but you mentioned you removed the Tilta amount plate latch and got the idea from Caleb. In the video you link to, I don't see him using the Title plate nor how to remove the latch. How did you remove the latch on the Tilta? Is it just a matter of removing the 3 screws holding the v mount? If so, can you give a link to your screwdriver cause dang they're pretty stubborn for me. Thanks!
Hi Mr.Jaredlank .... Really i am too impress this rig setup..... I like your Presentation with price list also.... But i am sorry to say why this shoot from backlight....
starting out at the moment and a few things i don't get: 1.) why would i want to record externally? why not just get a monitor and record internally? 2.) does the fan of the ninja v not interfer with the microphone right next to it? 3.) i don't understand why i would need rods on my camera rig? what are they for? for my RS3 gimbal they would be too big anyways?
DOPE Set up !! Easily the best looking rig I've seen with the fx3. Are you still happy with the mic or would you upgrade to a Sean make 600 etc ?? Cheers,
2 года назад
Thank you so much Jared for this amazing rig ! I've been studying some solutions and mine is quite close from yours, but with smallrig half cage, and i found the handle extension from smallrig really great. I'll probably go for your power solution, instead of carrying 6 battery's on me (4 for camera and 3 for monitor :-)). Thanks again and keep on !
Thanks! I also have the small rig half cage and really enjoy it as a second option, especially with the built in rail mount. Having one power supply has been super useful, so I’m glad you’re gonna check it out!
How did you manage to disassemble the tilta V-mount plate? With mine it seems impossible to unscrew the cover that you have to remove to get rid of the unlock mechanism as you said at 13:00 (It’s the exact same plate)
Question, you said its good to have the rode and sony mic running together as a back up. Are you recording the rode into the camera? And if so how? Wouldn't that be too many channels.
Hey bro I’m going to do a gym shoot and need to mic up the coach while filming people train etc Is the wireless go 2 good for that ? And also what is the purpose of the lav ?
thanks for the wonderful video but i have a question...its it SAFE to connect all your devices on one D-TAP splitter.. my V-mount battery has just one D-TAP slot and i got a splitter to be able to connect other devices .. please advice me
Hey! I’m not super familiar with splitters, but I would assume it’s safe since there are some many powered v mount plates on the market. Hope that helps!
Great video. I have a nearly identical setup. I haven't been able to get the built in screen to work while using the atomos. Do you know what settings need to be changed? thanks in advance!
Thanks! I believe the setting to keep the built in display on is in the external output menu and you have to disable HDMI info display. Hope that helps!
The gimbal I have right now can’t handle the full build payload so I use the quick release base plate to pull the fx3 off the rail system. It actually super fast but I think that when I eventually upgrade to the RS2 the whole rig will fit on the gimbal!
Fantastic looking rig! I'm on the fence right now about picking up the Sony mic to complete my FX3 rig. Finding mics that fit well in that shock mount, even with the rubber spacers, has been tricky.
Yeah I definitely feel that! You could always try converting the handle into just the KCM module and running a separate shotgun mount into it. Sounds like a hassle but could be useful!
Wild right? I never saw the point when people did it early on with DSLRs but now that cameras have great codecs that are actually useable it makes sense!
