Hello and welcome to the first of 18 videos showing you how I built The Vintage Model Company Vought Corsair balsa wood and tissue free flight aeroplane.
This episode introduces the kit and then goes through making up of the centre wing sections.
Hope you enjoy
The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War.
Designed and initially manufactured by Chance Vought, the Corsair was soon in great demand; additional production contracts were given to Goodyear, whose Corsairs were designated FG, and Brewster, designated F3A.
The Corsair was designed and operated as a carrier-based aircraft, and entered service in large numbers with the U.S. Navy in late 1944 and early 1945. It quickly became one of the most capable carrier-based fighter-bombers of World War II. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II, and its naval aviators achieved an 11:1 kill ratio. Yet early problems with carrier landings and logistics allowed it to be eclipsed as the dominant carrier-based fighter by the Grumman F6F Hellcat, powered by the same Double Wasp engine first flown on the Corsair's first prototype in 1940.
Instead, the Corsair came to and retained prominence in its area of greatest deployment: land-based use by the U.S. Marines.
The Corsair served almost exclusively as a fighter-bomber throughout the Korean War and during the French colonial wars in Indochina and Algeria. In addition to its use by the U.S. and British, the Corsair was also used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, French Naval Aviation, and other air forces until the 1960s.
From the first prototype delivery to the U.S. Navy in 1940, to final delivery in 1953 to the French, 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured in 16 separate models. Its 1942-53 production run was the longest of any U.S. piston-engined fighter

This is great! Mainstream telly can´t offer entertainment like this. Once I´d saved enough pocket money my dad used to give me a lift in his Singer Gazelle to a parade of shops, one of which was a model shop which sold Solarbo balsa sheet and stock, kits from Guillows, Veron and Keil Kraft, plus sheet metal for soldering up fuel tanks, glow plugs, rubber strip for motors, etc. I shall watch this build with interest...

Many thanks Del. Wow Singer Gazelle I had well and truly forgotten about that one. Just so you know The Vintage Model Company have the rights and are making laser cut versions of Veron and Keil Kraft kits along with some others. I got a Veron Aeronca Champion from them which is now my most viewed video on my RC channel (no idea why though lol). Thanks for watching and for your sub mate. It is very much appreciated.

Well Rob that was strangely engrossing - almost relaxing to watch. It's fascinating how these kits go together like the real aircraft, in that it all starts off with a wooden airframe which then gets covered. And wow 18 installments in all - thats so much work to get through. Do these things take longer than an RC car to put together ? Thumbs up and looking forward to the rest of the series, and hopefully a maiden flight to cap it all off at the end :))

Hello Cosmo. Yes they certainly do mate. On average it can take around 2 weeks if I work on them for around 8 hours a day. But quite a lot of the time is spent waiting for glue to set lol. Unfortunately I am at the mercy of the weather for flying these, because they are so light (around 35 to 40 grams) anything other than a very slight breeze they get blown all over the place. But Mark and I will (now he has promised) get out at some point and do some filiming of us at least trying to fly it lol. Thanks for the the great comment and your continued support mate.

@@robbrennanbalsawoodplanes My God ! 8 hours a day for 2 weeks ! That's brutal. Hey, don't feel obliged to fly it just because of me :-D. I wouldn't want you to risk it in the wind and ruin the model. Having said that I'm sure that we'll get a few days of dead, flat calm days in the inevitable UK heatwave this summer

@@thecontractor365 Yes you would hope we will with all those long hot dry days we have during our normal UK summers lol. This is what happened on my very first attempt at flying my very first model the SE5a. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BzdBQgDPuTk.html It does sound it but I do get time for a few coffee breaks.

Rob, I don't know if you Blokes get the Bob Ross programmme there, but Sir, you're the Bob Ross of Balsa Aircraft building!! 🍺🍺🍺👏👏👏👏 It's relaxing as well as stimulating. I've mentioned before that I wanted to build one or three... This is an outstanding, detailed tutorial. Or as me good Aussie Mate would say "Chewtorial"!!! 😛😂😅😅 Cheers Mate, and sorry it took me so long to get started. Carmine 🚂 🚙

Hello Carmine. No worries my friend. I just checked out Bob Ross and I do remember seeing one or two of his painting shows, I think they were late night viewing possibly on the BBC many years ago. Now you know why I have ended up with 18 videos lol. What I didn't realise to begin with is how much longer it takes to talk about something rather than just put captions and also during the edit sometimes where I would normal time-lapse a scene I end up leaving it real time as I say something I feel would be useful or informative. Many thanks for such a fantastic comment I am truly humbled my friend.

I personally think the real time (except for repetitive steps) is far better, for instruction... Of course, my opinion comes from a position of probably NOT having the patience to do it myself!!! 😀😛 So your problem has become a means to get out a lot of content for your new Channel, quickly! You're a Good Man, Mark as well. I gladly support both of you. 😎😊

Hi russ. Sort of, I keep this clean and only use it to display purposes as it shows the pale balsa wood pieces up better. I have a couple of other old and dirty matts for cutting out lol. Thanks for watching.

Did NOT know that CA can actually BURN Balsa! Top Tip!
@robbrennanbalsawoodplanes
@robbrennanbalsawoodplanes 5 лет назад
Me neither until oneday I saw smoke when I put a too much on. I think it is more that it melts but when I'm building and recording and trying to talk all at the same time I normally end up saying the first thing that comes into my mind and miss it during the edit to put a correction caption in lol.

No worries Mate!! 😉😎 Literally, if I had a dollar for every time I screwed something up, we wouldn't be in this sad situation!! I do know that CA is reactive to certain materials.... I spilled a dropping my pants - and I felt intense heat on me Leg! 💥🔥🔥🔥
