When looking at timbered properties, logging is always the first thing I consider. Logging is a great way to put habitat on the ground for deer as well as get a little extra income in the landowners' pocket. But once the timber harvest is done, that's when the work for the landowner begins.
In this video, I did some detail work in an area of our farm that was logged a few years ago. The main focus is cleaning up good spots for the deer to lie down as well as keeping travel corridors open. You'll also see that I cut plenty of trees immediately after the logging was done. It's these small details that can have a big overall impact on your lands ability to hold deer.

Looking good Sam. I started cleaning up some of the existing deer trails from north to south . Unfortunately the rain is making the swamp hard to get things done. Sinking half way up to my knees isn't very easy to get around in there. I am also struggling with just how to lay out this 40 acres. Not many habitat guys show how to set up lowland. Thanks for sharing.

Lowland is definitely a different beast. You really need to hone in on any high and dry spots u find. Otherwise trails is the name of the game. Also adding black spruce red osier dogwood gray dogwood and Elderberry are nice additions and they like wet feet.

Hello. I’m starting to construct some buck specific beds set apart from a larger hinge cut bedding area. I have a good back-stop and some canopy cover. Just wondering, given your experience, do you find bucks prefer to be able to see a ways out of their beds or have some form of cover right in their faces for better concealment? For context this is an area of low ground in a hardwood bush. Mostly ash. Floods up quite a bit so the wettest spots are bare but the rest is fairly thick and nasty. Farthest you can really see is about 50 yards with no leaves. Prepping these beds on a few small pieces of dry ground.

Definitely a room with a view for bucks. When I've went and found the buck beds of the bow bucks I've shot it's always been a spot with a nice back drop to bed up against with a great view in front of them. In that scenario they'll definitely bed more often on the edge overlooking the marsh

Great video! I had some TSI done 2 falls ago and have spent a lot of time cleaning it up and making trails through the tops. Do you do anything to stimulate the regen like a leaf blower, raking etc. to get the debris off the surface? A little disappointed in how much regen I'm seeing. I do have some areas with lots of boxelder that I am anxious to start hinging after watching this.

Thanks and glad to hear you've been getting at it! A fire right after doing some TSI can expedite the regen process. I generally just get sunlight to the forest floor and let nature do it's thing. Yah depending on species sometimes that successional growth process can take a while

Your farm is looking good, I did some hinge cutting today, elms and box elders are great for that here in central ny,, most of my hinges are edge feathering, I do need to plant some switch grass, but I also have some speckle alders sprouting up in spots.

Glad to hear you're getting at it! Elm and boxelders are my two favorite hinging trees here in Minnesota. They make a great hinge and stay alive well

Why do some so called experts say over head structure is not attractive to whitetails.😮
