Thanks for posting; yea, always better to play it safe when doing controlled burns. I always learn a thing or two after doing one. The main helpful tip for me has been mowing my fire lanes in early fall so it is first to green up in late winter/ early spring and contain fire within these lanes. Helps to keep my heart rate down!
Just had an area of RCG burned last week. Great timing on the video! One other thing I tried which seems to be working is cutting a bunch of popple that abutted RCG and that seems to be spreading into the RCG creating some cover.
That is a GREAT idea. That root system is running well out into your RCG so cutting it and setting that root system on fire with regrowth will work very well
Correct. This is almost a generational commitment. We’ve seen RCG invade cave-in rock switchgrass stands, even well-managed stands. Where feasible, farming it for a couple years with Round-up ready crops has helped us. And yes, planting woody species is easier than trying to maintain a native wet-meadow. Keep us updated on how this goes?
Definitely. The biggest goal is to keep it knocked back long enough to get the shrubs established. There will be a point where the shrubs get too tall and we can't spray and I'm sure the reed canary will start to fill back in. Yah we'll do a video in the future!
Did this on my SG🌾 in March under same conditions , worried it didn’t burn enough and gave the weeds a chance now to come back stronger . 🫣😔. Still ended with more Debris then I wanted
