Building XT-IDE kit in Amstrad PC1640 - AmsVenture Part 1 

Really enjoyed the video, jumped on board when you released your Windows timeline videos so I'm glad to see some other content show up!

Another good project with open source. Respect for the XT-IDE-CF-OPTIMA author for making it public.

My first job when I left school was repairing office equipment. We had a huge printing press out back with 4 old guys working on it. I put them out of a job when I started using software called Jetsetter on this PC. Happy days loool - Then we upgraded to the 1640 with a 40MB HDD - WOW!! :)

Memories, I had a pc1640 hd20. Put a bigger MFM drive in it to take advantage of the larger size the RLL controller would give you. 👍 My wife made me get rid of ten years ago or so. Nice to see one still going.

I just posted a link to a forum post, from the author of the XT-IDE, and what he had to say about the lack of caps on that reseller board. But I should have known the post would get auto-deleted, due to the link. Oops. Anywho, this info is more for anyone else reading than for TheRasteri himself... Decoupling caps aren't just about reducing glitches due to RF or noise, ofc. They also help supply the fairly large impulsive switching currents as the gates in the chips change state. And because the caps are generally placed close to each chip, it reduces the influence of trace impedance that would otherwise slow down the ability of the PSU to quickly respond to those current spikes. (and even if the chips on the board itself seem to work fine without caps, adding them would be a bit kinder to the ISA buffers on the motherboard.) You don't necessarily need a cap next to *every* chip on a board like that, but yeah, there's no good reason not to add them when they cost a few pennies. Loved your vids on the CGA/EGA modes, btw. Catching up with some vids more now.

I have just installed DOS on a real 800Mb IDE HDD on a 1512, with DOS 6.22 worked great. one thing i noticed on the 1512 was that i could not format the drive and after that using the sys command to transfer system files, no matter what media or harddrive I used it hung on BOOT. but doing the FDISK (full partition ) and reboot to format the drive with FORMAT C: /U /S and do the format and system files transfer with format command there was no problems at all. Im using XT-IDE V4 with 40 pin IDE interface.

There is a guy in NY selling this as a complete kit on ebay. Much easier to assemble and includes all parts and even the EEPROM is pre programmed.

I have the Schneider Amstrad PC1512SD with 512k on the shelf ... has no use anymore but throwing it out is also not an option :D

Did you manage to get the CF interface working in the end? I've got a PC1640 and thought the XT-CF Lite or something would be a good choice - but looks like it may just completely fail to work?
